Seeking the cave and seizing the demon, he meets the Old Man of Longevity; At court he sets the ruler right and saves the little children

Now, the Brocade Guard officer pulled the false Tang Monk out of the posthouse. With the Feathered Forest Guard clustered round him, they went straight to the palace gate and told the gate official, “We have brought the Tang Monk here. Please announce him.” The gate official hurried into court, reported their words to the foolish king and then invited the monk inside. All the officials knelt below the steps, but the false Tang Monk stood erect in the middle of them and called loudly, “King of Bhikshu, what do you want with this poor monk?” The king smiled. “We have an illness that has lingered a long time without a cure. Fortunately the Royal Father-in-Law has given Us a prescription. All the drugs are ready; only one ingredient is lacking to activate them. We have specially invited you, Elder, to ask for some of it. If Our illness is cured, We shall build a shrine for you, make offerings in all four seasons and keep its incense burning for as long as the kingdom endures.” The false Tang Monk said, “I am a monk, and I have come here alone. I do not know what Your Majesty has asked the Royal Father-in-Law to use as this ingredient.” The foolish king said, “We ask only for your heart and liver, Elder.” The false Tang Monk said, “To tell Your Majesty the truth, I have quite a few hearts. I don’t know what colour or kind you want.” The Royal Father-in-Law pointed at him from one side. “You monk, we want your black heart.” The false Tang Monk said, “In that case, bring a knife quickly and cut open my chest and belly. If there is a black heart, I shall respectfully obey.” Delighted, the foolish king thanked him and at once ordered an attendant official to fetch a short ox-ear knife and hand it to the false monk. The false monk took the knife, undid his clothes and thrust out his chest. He stroked his belly with his left hand, held the knife in his right, and with a ripping sound slit his belly open. Out rolled a whole heap of hearts. The civil officials went pale with fright; the military officers felt their bodies go numb. Seeing this from the hall, the Royal Father-in-Law said, “This is a monk with too many hearts.” The false monk picked through the bloody hearts one by one for everyone to see. There were red hearts, white hearts, yellow hearts, hearts of stinginess and greed, hearts set on profit and fame, jealous hearts, calculating hearts, hearts that must always win, hearts of lofty ambition, scornful hearts, murderous hearts, savage and venomous hearts, fearful hearts, cautious hearts, wicked and deluded hearts, hearts darkened by hidden ignorance and every kind of unwholesome heart—but not a single black heart. The foolish king was so terrified that he stood there stunned and speechless, trembling as he cried, “Take them away! Take them away!” The false Tang Monk could bear it no longer. He put away his conjured hearts, showed his true form and said to the foolish king, “Your Majesty has no discernment at all. We monks have nothing but good hearts. It’s your Royal Father-in-Law who has a black heart, just right to activate your medicine. If you don’t believe me, wait while I take his out for you to see.”

The Royal Father-in-Law opened his eyes wide at these words and looked closely. The monk’s face had changed; he no longer looked the same. Ah!

He knew the Great Sage Sun of old, whose name was famed five hundred years ago.

He drew back at once and rose on a cloud, but Pilgrim turned a somersault, leapt into the air and shouted, “Where are you going? Take a blow from my cudgel!” The Royal Father-in-Law met him with his coiling-dragon cane. What a battle the two fought in midair:

The As-You-Will cudgel, the coiling-dragon cane—a bank of heavy cloud fills the void. The Royal Father-in-Law was a demon all along, offering a spirit girl as an alluring beauty. The ruler’s thirst for pleasure made him ill;the evil spirit meant to slaughter children. The Great Sage meets him and displays his powers, seizing the monster, saving lives, resolving the ordeal. The iron cudgel comes fiercely down upon his head;the cane that meets it earns a cheer. They fight till mist fills Heaven and darkens the city, and every household blanches with fear.Civil and military officials lose their wits;consorts and embroidered palace ladies change colour. The foolish ruler of Bhikshu scrambles into hiding, trembling, helpless and distraught. The cudgel rises like a tiger from the hills;the cane swings like a dragon leaving the sea. This great uproar in the kingdom of Bhikshumakes right and evil plain at last. The demon fought Pilgrim desperately for more than twenty exchanges. His coiling-dragon cane could not withstand the gold-banded cudgel. He feinted with the cane, turned himself into a streak of cold light and dropped into the inner palace. There he brought out the demon queen he had presented to the king. Both turned to cold light and vanished, no one knew where.

The Great Sage lowered his cloud, came to the foot of the palace hall and said to the officials, “What a fine Royal Father-in-Law you have!” All the officials bowed together, thanking the divine monk. Pilgrim said, “Never mind bowing. Go and see where your foolish ruler is.” The officials said, “When our sovereign saw the battle, he fled in terror. We do not know which palace he went to.” Pilgrim ordered, “Find him quickly. Don’t let the Beautiful Queen carry him off.” At this, the officials, from the inner and outer courts alike, hurried with Pilgrim first to the Beautiful Queen’s palace. There was no sign of the king; even the Beautiful Queen had disappeared. The queens of the Central, Eastern and Western Palaces and all the consorts of the Six Courts came to thank the Great Sage. “Please get up,” he said. “It’s too soon for thanks. Go and find your sovereign.” Before long they saw four or five eunuchs supporting the foolish king as he emerged from behind the Jinshen Hall. All the ministers fell prostrate and reported with one voice, “Our sovereign! Our sovereign! A divine monk has blessed us with his presence and shown us the false and the true. The Royal Father-in-Law is an evil spirit, and the Beautiful Queen has disappeared as well.” Hearing this, the king invited Pilgrim out of the inner palace into the precious hall, bowed to thank him and said, “Elder, when you came this morning, you were so handsome and imposing. How have you changed your looks?” Pilgrim laughed. “To tell Your Majesty the truth, the man who came this morning was my master, Sanzang, the Emperor’s brother of the Tang dynasty. I am his disciple Sun Wukong. My two younger fellow disciples, Zhu Wuneng and Sha Wujing, are at the Jinting Hall Posthouse. When I learned that you had believed a demon’s lies and wanted my master’s heart and liver to activate your medicine, Old Sun changed into my master’s likeness and came here specially to subdue the demon.” At this, the king issued a decree ordering the Grand Steward of the cabinet to go at once to the posthouse and invite the master and his disciples to court.
