At Gold Peace Prefecture, they view the lamps on Lantern Festival night; In Dark Splendour Cave, the Tang Monk gives his statement

Where must you labour to cultivate meditation?Quickly curb the unruly horse and the frenzied ape.Hold them fast and bind them tight, and five colours arise;pause or halt a moment, and you fall into the Three Paths of Suffering.Let them roam at ease, and the divine elixir leaks away;give them the slightest freedom, and the jade-like nature withers.Joy, anger, worry and thought must all be swept clean;attaining the mystery, attaining the marvel, is just like having nothing.

Now, the Tang Monk and his three disciples left the city of Jade Splendour and travelled on without mishap—truly a land of perfect bliss. After five or six days on the road, they came in sight of another walled city. The Tang Monk asked Pilgrim, “What place is this?” “A walled city,” said Pilgrim. “But there are poles on the walls and no flags, so I can’t tell where we are. We’ll ask when we get closer.” When they reached the eastern suburb, they found teahouses and wine shops bustling on both sides of the street, and grain markets and oil shops busy with trade. A few idle fellows wandering the streets noticed Zhu Bajie’s long snout, Sha Monk’s black face and Pilgrim Sun’s red eyes. They crowded together to stare, though none dared come close and ask a question. The Tang Monk broke into a nervous sweat, afraid his disciples would make trouble. They passed several more alley mouths but still had not reached the city. Suddenly they saw a monastery gate bearing the three characters “Merciful Cloud Monastery.” “Shall we go in here for a while,” said the Tang Monk, “rest the horse and ask for a vegetarian meal?” “Good, good,” said Pilgrim. All four went in together. This is what they saw inside:

Precious towers stand in splendour;jewelled thrones rise high.Buddhist halls soar beyond the clouds;monks’ cells lie quiet in the moonlight.A pagoda rises through drifting crimson haze;among deep green trees, the revolving sutra cabinet is serene.A true Pure Land, a semblance of the Dragon Palace; purple clouds enfold the Great Hero Hall.People stroll endlessly along the two galleries;the pagoda is always open for visitors to climb.Incense burns in the censers hour after hour;lamps glow on the altars night after night.Suddenly a golden bell sounds from the abbot’s quarters, and monks serving the Buddha chant scriptures aloud.

As the four were looking about, a monk came out from beneath the gallery and bowed to the Tang Monk. “Venerable master, where have you come from?” “Your disciple comes from China, under the Tang dynasty,” said the Tang Monk. The monk threw himself down in obeisance. Alarmed, the Tang Monk helped him up. “Abbot, why pay me so great a courtesy?” The monk joined his palms. “Here, those who turn to goodness, read the scriptures and invoke the Buddha all hope that through their cultivation they may be reborn in your land of China. When I saw your bearing and your dress, venerable master, I knew you must have earned such blessings in a former life. That is why I bowed.” The Tang Monk smiled. “You honour me too much, too much. Your disciple is a wandering monk—what blessings do I enjoy? You, abbot, living here in peace and freedom, are the one who enjoys good fortune.” The monk led the Tang Monk into the main hall, where he bowed before the Buddha images. Only then did the Tang Monk call his disciples in. While the monk was talking with their master, Pilgrim and the other two had stood together with their faces turned away, holding the horse and watching the luggage, and the monk had paid them no attention. When they suddenly heard the Tang Monk call “Disciples,” all three turned round. The sight made the monk cry out in fright. “Grandfather! How can your worthy disciples be so ugly?” “Ugly they may be,” said the Tang Monk, “but they have considerable magic powers. I owe a great deal to their protection all along the road.”

As they were speaking, several more monks came out and bowed. The first monk told them, “This venerable master comes from China, the Great Tang, and these three are his worthy disciples.” Both delighted and afraid, the monks asked, “Venerable master, what brings you here from the great land of China?” The Tang Monk said, “By the Tang Emperor’s sacred command, I am going to Spirit Mountain to bow before the Buddha and seek the scriptures. Passing through your worthy district, I came especially to your honoured monastery, first to ask what place this is, and second to beg a vegetarian meal before going on.” The monks were all delighted and invited him into the abbot’s quarters. There they found several more monks performing rites for a household. Those who went in first called out again, “Come and see these people from China! It seems China has handsome ones and ugly ones. The handsome one is truly beyond any painter’s art, and the ugly ones are most peculiar.” All the monks and the patron of the rites came to meet them. Once greetings were over, everyone sat down. After tea, the Tang Monk asked, “What is the name of your worthy district?” “We are in an outlying prefecture of India,” said the monks. “This is Gold Peace Prefecture.” “How far is your prefecture from Spirit Mountain?” asked the Tang Monk. “It is two thousand li from here to the capital. We have travelled that road ourselves. But we have never been west to Spirit Mountain and do not know how much farther it is. We dare not give you a false answer.” The Tang Monk thanked them.
