話說濟公由知縣衙門吃完了酒飯出來，兩個人攙著，正遇見兩個賊人。和尚自言自語說：「我就是拿華雲龍的濟顛。」姚殿光一聽，意欲拉刀過去動手。自己又一回思：「先別莽撞。華雲龍既被和尚拿住，和尚必然能為不小，我二人明過去，未必是和尚的對手。莫如暗中瞧和尚住在哪裡，晚上去行刺，叫他明槍容易躲，暗箭最難防。」賊人這是心裡的話。和尚嘴裡就說：「對。瞧準了我和尚，我今天住府衙門西跨院內，要不服就去找我去。」兩個賊人一想：「真怪，我們心裡的事，和尚給說出來，這個和尚許有點來歷。」

Now, Ji Gong came out of the magistrate’s yamen full of wine and food, with two men holding him up by the arms, and ran straight into the two bandits. The monk was talking to himself: “I’m Crazy Ji, the one who caught Hua Yunlong.” When Yao Dianguang heard this, he was about to draw his knife and go for him. Then he thought again: “Better not be rash. If the monk caught Hua Yunlong, he must have no small powers. If the two of us go at him in the open, we may be no match for him. Better to watch in secret where he’s staying and come and kill him tonight. A spear in the open is easy to dodge; an arrow from the dark is hard to guard against. Let him find that out.” These were the words the bandit spoke in his heart. Out of the monk’s mouth came: “Right. Take a good look at this monk. Tonight I’m staying in the west side courtyard of the prefecture yamen. If you don’t like it, come and find me there.” The two bandits thought, “That’s strange. What was in our hearts, the monk has said out loud. This monk may be somebody after all.”
暗中跟著，見和尚進了府署。姚殿光、雷天化探明道路，二人回店。到店中吃喝完畢，候有二鼓以後，把夜行衣換好，由店中躥房越脊，來到衙門。找到西院一瞧，屋中有燈光，兩個人一看，和尚躺在床上睡了。姚殿光說：「你巡風，我進去殺他。」雷天化點頭。姚殿光剛要掀帘子進去，和尚一翻身爬起來，說：「好東西，你往哪裡走！」賊人嚇的撥頭就跑，和尚隨後就追。這兩個人跑出府衙門，和尚追出府衙門。這兩個人直跑了半夜，和尚追了半夜。天光亮了，兩個人跑出了城，好容易瞧後面沒人追了。眼前一個樹林子，靠左山坡，兩個人要歇息歇息，剛一到樹林子，和尚說：「才來。」嚇的兩個賊人就要跑。和尚用手一指，把兩個人定住。和尚說：「我也不打你們，我也不罵你們。我拘蠍子把你們咬死。」正說著話，只聽山坡一聲「無量佛」。和尚一看，來了一個老道。頭戴如意道冠，身穿藍緞道袍，腰系絲絛，白襪雲鞋，肋下佩著寶劍，面如童子一般。

They followed him in secret and saw the monk go into the prefecture offices. Yao Dianguang and Lei Tianhua made sure of the way, and the two of them went back to their inn. At the inn they ate and drank, and when the second watch had come and gone they changed into their night clothes, slipped out of the inn over the roofs and along the ridges, and came to the yamen. They found the west courtyard and looked: there was lamplight in the room, and the two of them saw the monk lying asleep on the bed. “You keep watch,” said Yao Dianguang. “I’ll go in and kill him.” Lei Tianhua nodded. Yao Dianguang was just about to lift the door curtain and go in when the monk rolled over and scrambled up. “You rotten thing,” he said, “where do you think you’re going?” The bandits were so frightened they turned tail and ran, and the monk went after them. The two of them ran out of the prefecture yamen, and the monk chased them out of the prefecture yamen. The two of them ran half the night, and the monk chased them half the night. By daybreak the pair had run out of the city, and at long last they looked behind them and saw no one following. Ahead of them was a wood, with a hillside on the left. The two of them meant to rest a while, but they had only just reached the wood when the monk said, “Only just got here, have you?” The two bandits were so frightened they were about to run again, but the monk pointed a finger and held them both fast where they stood. “I won’t beat you,” said the monk, “and I won’t curse you. I’ll call up scorpions and have them sting you to death.” Just as he was speaking, a cry of “Limitless Buddha!” came from the hillside. The monk looked and saw a Daoist coming. He wore a ruyi Daoist cap and a blue satin Daoist robe, with a silk sash round his waist, white socks and cloud-patterned shoes, and a precious sword hung at his side. His face was like a young boy’s.
書中交代：這個老道，乃是鐵牛嶺避修觀的。姓褚，名道緣，外號人稱神童子。他師父叫廣法真人沈妙亮，乃是萬松山雲霞觀紫霞真人李涵陵的徒弟，褚道緣是李涵陵的徒孫。他在避修觀出家，每逢早晨起來，他要在外面閒遊，借天地之正氣，能精神倍長。今日閒遊來至此地，姚殿光、雷天化一瞧，趕緊就嚷：「道爺救人。」褚道緣抬頭一看說：「我為什麼救你們，你們是哪的？」姚殿光說：「我二人是玉山縣的人。因為我們有個拜弟兄，被這個和尚拿了，我二人要替朋友報仇，沒想到被和尚把我們制住，要拘蠍子咬我們。道爺救命罷。」褚道緣一聽說：「你二人既是玉山縣的人，有一個夜行鬼小崑崙郭順，你們可認識？」姚殿光說：「那不是外人，郭順我們是拜兄弟。」褚道緣一聽：「既然如是，這和尚是誰？」姚殿光說：「是濟顛。」褚道緣一聽，呵了一聲。說：「原來是濟顛僧！我山人找他，如同鑽木取火，正要拿他，這倒巧了。我風聞濟顛和尚在常山縣捉拿孟清元，雷擊華清風，火燒張妙興，害死姜天瑞，屢次跟三清教為仇。我正要拿濟顛給三清教報仇，今天顛僧你可來了！」和尚說：「雜毛老道，你打算怎么樣？」褚道緣說：「好濟顛，你若知道祖師爺利害，跪倒叫我三聲祖師爺，我饒恕你不死。」和尚說：「好老道，你跪倒給我磕頭，叫我三聲祖宗爺，我也不能饒你。」

A word of explanation: this Daoist came from Bixiu Temple on Tieniu Ridge. His surname was Chu and his name Daoyuan, and people called him the Divine Child (Shentongzi). His master was Shen Miaoliang, the Perfected One Guangfa, who was himself a disciple of Li Hanling, the Perfected One Zixia of Yunxia Temple on Mount Wansong, so Chu Daoyuan was Li Hanling’s disciple’s disciple. He had left the world at Bixiu Temple. Every morning when he got up he liked to stroll about outside, to take in the true breath of heaven and earth, which doubled his vigour. Today his stroll had brought him here. As soon as Yao Dianguang and Lei Tianhua saw him they shouted, “Daoist Master, save us!” Chu Daoyuan looked up. “Why should I save you?” he said. “Where are you from?” “We two are from Yushan County,” said Yao Dianguang. “We have a sworn brother who was caught by this monk, and we wanted to avenge our friend. We never thought the monk would hold us fast like this. He’s going to call up scorpions to sting us. Save our lives, Daoist Master!” When Chu Daoyuan heard this he said, “If you two are from Yushan County, there is one Guo Shun, the Night-Walking Ghost, Little Kunlun. Do you know him?” “He’s no stranger,” said Yao Dianguang. “Guo Shun is a sworn brother of ours.” “In that case,” said Chu Daoyuan, “who is this monk?” “It’s Crazy Ji,” said Yao Dianguang. Chu Daoyuan let out a “Ha!” “So it’s Crazy Ji! For this man of the mountains, finding him has been as hard as drilling wood for fire. I was just wanting to catch him, and what luck. I’ve heard it said that in Changshan County Crazy Ji arrested Meng Qingyuan, struck Hua Qingfeng with thunder, burned Zhang Miaoxing and brought about Jiang Tianrui’s death, and time and again he has made himself the enemy of the Sanqing Sect. I was just meaning to catch Crazy Ji and take revenge for the Sanqing Sect, and today, crazy monk, here you are!” “You shaggy-haired Daoist,” said the monk, “what do you mean to do about it?” “Fine, Crazy Ji,” said Chu Daoyuan. “If you know how dangerous your Patriarch is, kneel down and call me Patriarch three times, and I’ll spare your life.” “Fine Daoist,” said the monk. “Even if you knelt down, kowtowed to me and called me Grand Ancestor three times, I still couldn’t spare you.”
