On Mount Bagua, Lei and Chen run into sorcerer Daoists; At Sanqing Temple, Zhang and Dong lay a wicked plot

Now, when Lu Xiuzhen went into the inner room and looked for Lei Ming and Chen Liang, there was no trace of them. He lifted the hanging round the bed and saw that a big hole had been dug through the east wall under the bed. He held up a lamp to look, and on the ground beside the hole lay an ingot of gold, a good five taels in weight. In the days of the Song dynasty, gold and white jade were the most precious things of all: one tael of gold could be exchanged for fifty taels of white silver.

A word of explanation: as Lei Ming and Chen Liang sat in the inner room, they knew these two Daoists were going to stir up trouble, and if it came to a fight they were no match for the Daoists. Not long before, at Baishui Lake, they had very nearly been killed by these Daoists, and if they met them today, it would not end quietly.

Chen Liang thought, “Of the thirty-six stratagems, running away is the best.” He talked it over with Lei Ming, and they dug a hole and crawled out through it. “Second Brother,” said Chen Liang, “if we leave like this… The Daoist of this temple has treated us very handsomely. Can we eat his food for nothing? Let’s leave him an ingot of gold as a token of our thanks.” That was why an ingot of gold lay on the ground. When Lu Xiuzhen saw that the men were gone and had left an ingot of gold behind, the old Daoist understood at once. He flew into a towering rage. “You two wretches! You plainly came here to stir up trouble. It isn’t that my eyes light up at the sight of money, but those two must be decent men. When they left, not only was nothing in my room missing, not the smallest thing, they even left me this ingot of gold rather than eat a meal of mine for nothing. You two wretches are truly infuriating. If it weren’t for Li Hanling’s sake, would I put up with you two coming to pester me for no reason? You’ve got off lightly, the pair of you. Here! Boys! Throw these two out of the temple for me!” The two of them didn’t dare not go. There was nothing for it: they turned and headed straight out, and a Daoist boy followed them to shut the gate. Once outside, Chu Daoyuan said, “Young Brother, we two beg you to do us a kindness today. It’s far too late. Let us two hide in your room, and don’t let the Patriarch know. We’ll leave at daybreak. Will that do?” “Oh, all right,” said the little Daoist boy. “You two can squat in our room for half the night.
