Now, the Old Immortal Elder gave the order: “Ask Ji Gong in!” And he thought to himself: “I’ll see this Crazy Ji and find out what sort of being he is. If he is one of the great Golden Immortals, there will be white vapour above his head. If he is an arhat from the West, there will be golden light, Buddha light, divine light above his head. If he is a demon, there is sure to be black vapour. And if he is a common mortal, I shall see that too.” Just as he was thinking this, he saw the monk come in from outside. The Old Immortal Elder looked, and here was a common mortal. He said to himself: “Hearing of a man is not as good as seeing him, and seeing him beats hearing of him. Chu Daoyuan and Zhang Daoling must be utterly useless, to let a man like this humiliate them. It’s truly laughable.”

The old fox demon looked and thought the same: a common mortal like him, and my disciples didn’t dare tangle with him? The monk came to the Crane Studio and looked about. This was the east side courtyard. The north building had five rooms, three in view, five within. In the Crane Studio in the main room on the north side, the door curtain was rolled up high. Against the north wall stood a long narrow table with many scriptures set out on it, Laozi’s Daodejing among them. In the very middle hung the Great Gourd of Cosmic Mysteries. In front of it stood an Eight Immortals table with chairs on either side. In the chair at the place of honour sat a Daoist nun of about forty, fair and clear of skin and looking much younger than her years, and very beautiful. She wore a black cloth Daoist cap and a blue cloth Daoist robe set off with a black collar band, white socks and cloud-pattern shoes. In the lower chair sat the Old Immortal Elder. The monk looked at them and said, “How are you keeping, the old cock and the hen?”

At that the Jade-Faced Old Fox Demon went red with shame. The Old Immortal Elder said “Ah!” and then: “Is this Ji Gong of Lingyin Temple who comes?” “You flatter me,” said the monk. “Immortal Elder, my name is Daoji.” “Daoji,” said the Immortal Elder. “Oh, too kind, Taiyue,” said the monk. “Crazy monk,” said the Old Immortal Elder. “Mangy Daoist,” said the monk. “Crazy monk, you are bold indeed,” said the Old Immortal Elder. “If I were timid I wouldn’t have dared to come!” said the monk. The old fox demon said, “And what sort of Crazy Ji did I imagine? He’s nothing but a beggar monk. Look at that tattered robe of yours — it’s a disgrace.” The monk gave a faint smile and said,
“Let no one laugh at this tattered robe of mine;this robe of mine is a marvel.Thirty-six thousand holes for the wind,sixty-four patches set all round.Spread it out and it shades the sky and covers the earth;slip into the sleeves and it’s a monk’s robe again.Warm in winter, cool in summer, mild in spring;and in autumn every insect keeps away.If anyone asks me what it’s worth —not for ten thousand taels of gold would I part with it.”
