話說這個和尚一見知縣，竟敢目無官長，不但不畏懼，反倒一陣狂笑。說：「縣太爺，你必是為王勝仙那案來的，那案正是洒家做的，你來了便該怎么樣？」知縣一瞧，這事情不好，嚇的驚慌失色，連忙說：「和尚你錯認了人了，那哪裡是縣太爺？原本是行路的客商。」凶僧哈哈一笑說：「你不用不認，錢塘縣我是常去。」知縣趙文輝說：「和尚你不要錯認人，我要告辭趕路。」說著話，站起來就要往外走，和尚道：「哪裡走！今天你自來到我這廟中，爾休想逃走！這叫放著天堂有路你不走，地獄無門要找尋。徒弟，來給我將贓官縛了！」立刻小和尚進來，就把趙大老爺反剪二臂縛了。

Now, when this monk saw the magistrate, he was bold enough to show no respect at all for an officer of the court; far from being afraid, he burst into wild laughter. “Your Honour the county magistrate,” he said, “you must have come about the Wang Shengxian case. That case was yours truly’s work. Now you’re here, what are you going to do about it?” The magistrate saw that things had turned bad. Frightened, white in the face, he said quickly, “Monk, you’ve mistaken me for someone else. What county magistrate? I’m only a merchant on the road.” The vicious monk gave a great laugh. “No use denying it. I’m in Qiantang County all the time.” “Monk, don’t mistake me for someone else,” said the magistrate, Zhao Wenhui. “I must take my leave and be on my way.” As he spoke he stood up to go out. “Where do you think you’re going?” said the monk. “You came to my temple today of your own accord. Don’t dream of getting away! It’s just as they say: there’s a road to heaven and you won’t take it; hell has no gate and you come looking for one. Disciples! Come and tie up this crooked official for me!” At once the little monks came in, pulled Lord Zhao’s arms behind his back and tied him up.
書中交代：這個和尚名叫月明，他有三個師弟，叫月朗、月空、月靜，月空、月靜沒在廟裡住著，就是月朗在這裡。這兩個和尚本是酒色之徒，廟裡有夾壁牆地窖子，藏著有幾個婦人，都是煙花柳巷買來的。這兩個和尚都會妖術邪法，那天兩個人到西湖去閒遊，見王勝仙的愛妾坐著轎，長的十分美貌，兩個和尚一看，淫心已動，月明說：「師弟，你看真是絕色的佳人，你我施展法術，把她搶了去。」當時就地祭起了一陣怪風，把田氏由轎子裡拉出來，背著就走，婆子丫環瞧見要嚷，被和尚拉出戒刀給殺了。將田氏背回廟，和尚說：「你要不從我，當把你殺了。」田氏本是歌妓出身，還有什麼不從？百般獻媚，從兩個和尚那件雲雨之事。和尚只打算這樣事沒人知道，焉想到被濟公給指出來。今天月明一瞧知縣一來，月明常瞧知縣過堂問案，不攔閒人看，故此認識他，月明一想：「他既來了，不能放他走，莫如剪草除根，省得萌芽復起。縱虎歸山，長出牙爪，定要傷人。」立時叫小和尚把知縣捆起來，趙升一看說：「好和尚，膽子真不小，敢情是賊和尚！」一邊嚷著，就往外跑。和尚說：「別叫他走了，把他拿回來。」這句話尚未說完，外面角門「喀嚓」一響，把門踢開，由外面趙大、王二等八個班頭闖進來了。這八個班頭也是出來私訪，剛來到廟門首，就聽裡面趙升喊嚷，八個頭兒把門踢開，各拉鐵尺闖進來。就要動手，和尚用手一指，用定神法把八個人俱都定住。和尚伸手拉戒刀，剛要殺人，就聽外面一聲喊嚷：「好孽障大膽！光天化日，朗朗乾坤，竟敢在此要殺人？待山人來也！」

A word of explanation: this monk was called Yueming. He had three junior brothers, Yuelang, Yuekong and Yuejing. Yuekong and Yuejing did not live at the temple; only Yuelang was there. These two monks were slaves to wine and women. The temple had double walls and a cellar, where they kept several women, all bought out of the pleasure quarters. Both monks knew sorcery and black magic. That day the two of them had gone strolling by West Lake and seen Wang Shengxian’s beloved concubine riding past in her sedan chair. She was very beautiful, and at the sight of her the two monks were stirred to lust. “Brother,” said Yueming, “look, there’s a beauty without equal. Let’s work our magic and carry her off.” Then and there they raised a weird wind, pulled Madam Tian out of the sedan chair, slung her on a back and made off. The serving women and maids saw it and were about to cry out, but the monks drew their monk’s knives and killed them. They carried Madam Tian back to the temple. “If you won’t do as I say,” said the monk, “I’ll kill you.” Madam Tian had been a singing girl to begin with; what was there she would not do? She fawned on them every way she knew, and gave herself to the two monks in the business of clouds and rain. The monks reckoned no one would ever know of it; who would have thought Ji Gong would point it out? Today, when the magistrate arrived, Yueming knew him at a glance: he had often watched him hearing cases in court, where idlers were not kept out. Yueming thought, “Now he’s come, I can’t let him go. Better to pull up the weed by the roots, so it never sprouts again. Let a tiger go back to the hills and it grows teeth and claws, and it’s sure to hurt someone.” He at once had the little monks tie the magistrate up. Zhao Sheng saw it. “Fine monk you are, and no small nerve!” he shouted. “So you’re a thieving monk!” Still shouting, he ran for the door. “Don’t let him get away,” said the monk. “Fetch him back.” Before the words were out, there was a crack at the side gate as it was kicked open, and in burst Zhao Da, Wang Er and the rest, eight head constables in all. These eight had also come out on a secret inquiry, and had just reached the temple gate when they heard Zhao Sheng shouting inside. The eight of them kicked the gate open, drew their iron rulers and charged in. They were about to strike when the monk pointed a finger and fixed all eight where they stood with the immobilizing spell. The monk reached for his monk’s knife and was about to kill them when a shout came from outside: “Wicked creature, how dare you! In broad daylight, under a clear sky, you dare to kill people here? This mountain man has come!”
和尚一看，來者正是孫道全。和尚一想「事情不好，鬧大了，莫如三十六著走為上著」。趕緊夠奔後面，告訴他師弟月朗，帶著小和尚開後門，一併逃走。孫道全先救了八個班頭，顧不得追趕和尚，又把縣太爺找著救了，在廟中各處一搜，由夾壁牆搜出五個婦人來，一同帶著回到衙門。一問，這五個婦人內中就有一個是王勝仙的愛妾田氏，那四個都是妓者，當堂開放。然後將白魚寺廟入官，另招住持僧人，隨即用轎子把田氏給王勝仙送回去。田氏見了王勝仙，還說沒有失節，其實，跟和尚睡了兩夜了。這也是王勝仙報應，他素來常常霸占良家婦女，叫他的愛妾被人家搶去。田氏本是他心上的人，見找了回來，很喜歡，叫知縣案後訪拿和尚。知縣總算便宜，沒被參了。把事情辦完了，孫道全告辭回廟去。

The monk looked, and the newcomer was none other than Sun Daoquan. “This has gone wrong, and it’s grown too big,” thought the monk. “Of the thirty-six stratagems, running away is the best.” He hurried to the back and told his brother Yuelang, and they took the little monks, opened the back gate and fled together. Sun Daoquan first freed the eight head constables; he had no time to chase the monks. Then he found His Honour the county magistrate and freed him too. They searched every corner of the temple, brought five women out from inside the double walls, and took them all back to the yamen. On questioning, one of the five turned out to be Wang Shengxian’s beloved concubine, Madam Tian; the other four were prostitutes, and they were let go then and there in court. Next the magistrate had Baiyu Temple confiscated, found another monk to take charge of it, and at once sent Madam Tian back to Wang Shengxian in a sedan chair. When Madam Tian saw Wang Shengxian she even told him she had kept her virtue; in fact she had slept with the monks for two nights. This too was Wang Shengxian’s retribution. He had always made a habit of seizing respectable women, and now his own beloved concubine had been carried off by others. Madam Tian was the darling of his heart, and he was very glad to have her found and brought back; he told the magistrate to put the case on record and hunt down the monks afterwards. The magistrate had got off lightly after all: he had not been impeached. With the business settled, Sun Daoquan took his leave and went back to his temple.
