Now, Yang Meng had been thrown out by Niu Gai. Feeling he had lost face, he reached for his sword, ready to fight Niu Gai to the death. Chen Xiao hurried to stop him. “Brother, don’t. For one thing, you can see he’s a simpleton; for another, it’s beneath the two of us to stoop to his level. A great man overlooks a small man’s faults, and a chancellor’s belly is big enough to hold a sea. Why go this far? Let’s be going.” Chen Xiao talked Yang Meng round and they left. Niu Gai was in a huff and did no more performing; he took his five hundred-odd cash and walked on. He was hungry again. Seeing a flatbread stall, Niu Gai said, “Count ’em out for me.” The flatbread seller counted out fifty, one by one. Niu Gai bundled them up in the front of his archer’s robe, tossed the seller two hundred-odd cash, turned and walked off. “Sir,” said the flatbread seller, “that’s not enough money.” “That’s all the money there is,” said Niu Gai. “Take it or leave it.” And as he spoke, he ran. The flatbread seller had half a mind to chase him, but then there would be nobody to mind the stall, and Niu Gai got clean away with the flatbreads.

As he went along, he saw a mutton shop where the stewed mutton was just coming out of the pot. Niu Gai went over and said, “Give me this piece. Give me that piece.” The shop’s owner fetched them for him. Niu Gai took five pieces of meat, tossed down three hundred cash and walked off. “That’s not enough!” said the mutton man. Niu Gai took to his heels, and the owner chased him but couldn’t catch him. With his flatbreads and mutton, Niu Gai came into a lane. Seeing a mounting block outside someone’s gate, he set the flatbreads down on the stone, meaning to sit there and eat. As luck would have it, the flatbreads fell to the ground; a dog saw them, snatched up a flatbread in its jaws and ran. “You rotten dog!” said Niu Gai. “I haven’t eaten yet, and you grab my food first? I’ll beat you to death, you sorry ball-bag!” He took up his staff and gave chase, never minding that the flatbreads and mutton he had left on the stone would be lost. He chased the dog, the dog ran this way and that, and then it slipped through a dog hole into somebody’s house. Niu Gai looked and said, “Rotten dog! I’ll find the dog’s owner and make him pay me back.” He stood at the gate and yelled, “Dog owner, come out!” He yelled twice and nobody inside answered, so Niu Gai beat on the gate with his staff. Crash, crash! went the gate, louder and louder.
書中交代：這個門裡正是打虎英雄竇永衡在這住著，楊猛、陳孝剛才來，正跟竇永衡提說方才幫場之故，遇見一個不通情理賣藝的真正可惱。正說著話，聽外面街門「喀嚓喀嚓」直響，外面喊嚷：「狗主快出來！」楊猛說：「誰砸門？咱們瞧瞧去。」三人一同出來，開了門一看，是方才那賣藝的人。陳孝一想：「這倒不錯，倒追上門來了。」陳孝一使眼，竇永衡繞到牛蓋身後，一揪牛蓋髮髻，楊猛就揪牛蓋手腕子，陳孝底下一腿，就把牛蓋踢倒，三個人拿一個，把牛蓋給捆上。牛蓋這嚷：「好狗主不講禮，我那邊還有火燒、羊肉呢。」竇永衡說：「什麼狗主？亂七八糟的。且先把他擱在院裡，少時咱們喝完酒再盤問他。」三個人把門關好了，把棍也倒立牆下，三人來到屋中擺上酒菜，喝酒談心。剛喝了兩杯酒，就聽外面打門說：「開門來！」楊猛一聽是濟公的聲音，說：「師父來了。」竇永衡就問：「誰？」陳孝說：「這可不是外人，是我二人的師父，咱們出去瞧瞧去。」三個人一同來到外面，開門一看，果然是濟公同著鐵面天王鄭雄。

A word of explanation: behind this very gate lived Dou Yongheng, the Tiger-Slaying Hero. Yang Meng and Chen Xiao had only just arrived, and were telling Dou Yongheng how they had stepped in to help a man at his pitch and run into a street performer so unreasonable it was truly infuriating. As they were talking, they heard the street gate going crash, crash, and someone outside yelling, “Dog owner, come out quick!” “Who’s smashing the gate?” said Yang Meng. “Let’s go and look.” The three went out together, opened the gate and looked: it was the performer from before. Chen Xiao thought, “Well, isn’t this handy — he’s chased us right to the door.” Chen Xiao signalled with his eyes. Dou Yongheng went round behind Niu Gai and grabbed his topknot, Yang Meng seized Niu Gai by the wrists, Chen Xiao swept a leg low and kicked Niu Gai over, and three men against one, they tied Niu Gai up. Niu Gai yelled, “Fine dog owner you are, no manners! I’ve still got flatbreads and mutton over there.” “What dog owner?” said Dou Yongheng. “What a lot of nonsense. Leave him in the yard for now; when we’ve finished our wine we’ll question him.” The three of them shut the gate properly, stood the staff upside down against the wall, came into the house, set out wine and dishes, and drank and talked. They had barely drunk two cups when they heard someone knocking at the gate outside: “Open up!” Yang Meng knew Ji Gong’s voice when he heard it. “Master’s here,” he said. “Who is it?” asked Dou Yongheng. “He’s no stranger,” said Chen Xiao. “He’s the master of us two. Let’s go out and see.” The three went out together, opened the gate and looked, and sure enough it was Ji Gong, with Zheng Xiong, the Iron-Faced Heavenly King.
