Now, Chan Master Ji Gong was waiting at the prefecture yamen. One day someone came in to report that four men had arrived outside and were asking to see him.

The monk told them to show the men in, and before long four heroes came in from outside. Gu Guozhang looked up. The first stood a little over seven feet tall, slim at the waist and broad across the back. On his head he wore a six-panel warrior’s cap of silvery red, set with six little bright mirrors, and on its front a pompom of plain velvet bobbed and shook. Stuck slantwise at his temple was a sprig of the Flower of Rectitude and Chastity. He wore a silvery-red robe with archer’s cuffs, a goose-yellow silk sash at his waist and thin-soled boots, and over his shoulders hung a hero’s cloak the blue-green of West Lake. His face was pale gold, with thick brows, big eyes and a well-shaped nose, and his chin was beardless: a hero in the prime of his youth. This was the Golden-Haired Sea Horse, Sun Deliang. The second wore a six-panel warrior’s cap of pink damask satin, set with six bright mirrors, and he too wore the flower against lust. He had on a pink damask robe with a narrow collar, close sleeves and archer’s cuffs, piped all over with gold thread and edged in gold, and embroidered with peonies in three shades of blue. At his waist was a silk sash hung with jade rings and jade pendants; he wore a single-layer jacket and thin-soled boots, and over it all a hero’s cloak of pink damask satin embroidered all over with clusters of flowers. His face was like a silver basin, fine as beautiful jade; his brows had a murderous cast, and his golden eyes bulged. This was the Fire-Eyed River Boar, Sun Deming. The third wore an emerald-blue jacket and was also dressed as a fighting man, with a pale yellow face, fine brows and bright eyes: this was the Water Yaksha, Han Long. The fourth, in a black jacket, stood nine feet tall, like the bottom half of a black pagoda, with thick brows and eyes round as rings: this was Han Qing. The prefect looked them over; all four were men of no common bearing. “You four have come!” said the monk. The four men hurried to bow. “Holy monk, it’s been a long time.” “Sit down, you four,” said the monk.

When the four had greeted the prefect and exchanged courtesies with Lei Ming and Chen Liang, everyone took a seat. “It’s very good you four have come,” said the monk. “This monk sent for you four specially, to trouble you with a job.” “We four heard about it from Yao Dianguang and Lei Tianhua,” said Sun Deliang. “It’s all on account of this Ciyun Temple business. Whatever your orders are, holy monk, whatever you want us four to do, just say the word. We’ll do it if we die ten thousand deaths.” “I don’t need you for anything else,” said the monk. “It’s just this: below Niutou Peak, on the front hill of Woniu Rock, the bandits have five hundred boats. If you four can wreck their river-barring net, their rolling-dragon blade wheels and their boats, that alone will count as a remarkable deed. Nobody else can manage it, so I’m troubling you four to do it.” The Golden-Haired Sea Horse, Sun Deliang, and the other three nodded and agreed. “Since you ask it, holy monk, it’s a small matter. We four will take our leave right now. Wait for our news, holy monk!”
