Trying out his treasure, a Daoist bags a novice by mistake;Shown the golden light, Daoyuan takes a master

Now, the moment the demon came, Chu Daoyuan flung the Eight-Treasure Cloud-Light Immortal Bag out at it and muttered a spell. Truly, there were ten thousand shafts of rosy light and a thousand strands of auspicious vapour, and the demon fled like a wisp of smoke. Chu Daoyuan had not caught the demon. He picked up the Eight-Treasure Cloud-Light Immortal Bag and waited until it was broad daylight, but the demon did not come back. The Liu brothers had seen it all clearly from the side room. They came out and bowed to the Daoist. “Did you all see that?” said Chu Daoyuan. “Immortal Master,” said Liu the Good, “your powers really are vast and your magic boundless: you drove the demon away. But there’s one thing. Don’t leave, Reverend. If you go, I’m afraid the demon will come back, and then our village will suffer terribly at its hands.” “I won’t leave,” said Chu Daoyuan. “I’ll stay here three days, and that’s that. If the demon comes back, I’ll be sure to catch it. If it doesn’t come in three days, most likely it won’t come at all, and then I’ll go.” “Good,” said Liu the Good. “Immortal Master, there’s no need for you to stay in this shrine. We’ll take you north to Sanqing Temple. There’s an old Daoist in that temple called Zheng Xuanxiu, the Perfected One of the Iron Brush (Tiebi Zhenren). You two Daoist masters can keep each other company, and there are people in that temple to wait on you.” “I know Zheng Xuanxiu,” said Chu Daoyuan. “He’s a good friend of my master, Shen Miaoliang. I’ll go and see him.” “If you know him, Reverend, so much the better,” said Liu the Good. That day they went with Chu Daoyuan to Sanqing Temple. When they knocked, a Daoist novice came out to open the gate, took one look and knew him. “Where have you come from, Reverend?” “Is your Venerable Master here?” said Chu Daoyuan. “My Venerable Master is seeing a guest,” said the novice. “Who’s here?” said Chu Daoyuan. “Ji Gong of Lingyin Temple, with two head constables,” said the novice. “They stayed here last night.” When Chu Daoyuan heard this, he said, “It was meant to be! I’ve been looking for Crazy Ji to get my revenge and couldn’t find him. If he’s here, so much the better.”

A word of explanation: the day before, when Ji Gong saw Chu Daoyuan stop the decorated pavilion, the monk took He Lanqing and Tao Wanchun into a wineshop and ordered wine and food. When they had eaten and drunk and he had paid, he left with the two head constables and made straight for Sanqing Temple. Just as they reached the temple gate, they saw Zheng Xuanxiu standing in the gateway. “Daoist Master Zheng, how are you!” said the monk. Zheng Xuanxiu saw that Ji Gong had come and was delighted. He remembered the time before, when Ji Gong had made sport of the Divine Child, Chu Daoyuan: in the wine tower the monk had tricked Zheng Xuanxiu out of his silver, and at the village entrance, over the fineness of that silver, Zheng Xuanxiu had come to blows with him. Just then they had run into Shen Miaoliang, the monk had shown his three lights, and Zheng Xuanxiu had known that the monk was an eminent monk who had attained the Way. Now, seeing him again, he hurried to bow. “Holy monk, it’s been a long time! Where are you off to?” “I came specially to visit you,” said the monk. “Limitless Buddha!” said Zheng Xuanxiu. “Holy monk, please come into the temple and sit.” “All right,” said the monk. “I’ll impose on you for a seat.” He took the two head constables into the temple, and when they came to the Crane Studio, they found it very quiet and elegant. The monk took his seat, a novice brought tea, and Zheng Xuanxiu talked with the monk. Now the monk was deeply learned, with brocade in his breast and pearls hidden in his belly, a man of great gifts, and the more the two of them talked, the better they got on. Zheng Xuanxiu was full of admiration for the monk and kept him for a meal, and he stayed the night. This morning they had got up early and drunk their tea and had some pastries, and the meal was just about to be laid out when they heard knocking outside. The novice opened the gate and saw it was Chu Daoyuan. When the novice mentioned that Ji Gong was here, Chu Daoyuan said, “Now I’m owed my revenge,” and strode straight in. The monk looked. “This is bad,” he said. “My enemy’s here.” Zheng Xuanxiu quickly stood up. “Chu Daoyuan, you’ve come! Ji Gong is here with me today. For my sake, let it be. I’ll make peace between you two.” “Not a chance!” said Chu Daoyuan. “No matter who says so, it won’t help. He’s bullied me something terrible, and I came especially to pay him back.” As he spoke, he reached in and pulled out the Eight-Treasure Cloud-Light Immortal Bag. “Today I’m going to bag Crazy Ji no matter what, and show him what I can do.” “Don’t,” said Zheng Xuanxiu. “Do it for my sake.” “Come now, Daoist Master Chu, let me off,” said the monk. Even He Lanqing and Tao Wanchun begged the Daoist. “No,” said Chu Daoyuan. At once he gave the Eight-Treasure Cloud-Light Immortal Bag a shake, and before their eyes the monk was inside it. Chu Daoyuan picked the bag up and was about to dash it on the ground, meaning to smash Ji Gong to death, when Zheng Xuanxiu snatched it away from him. “Chu Daoyuan, I won’t allow it. We who have left the world take compassion as our gate and kind thoughts as our root. We may not take a life for no reason. You and Ji Gong have no great feud between you. Bagging him is enough.” As he spoke, Zheng Xuanxiu tipped the Eight-Treasure Cloud-Light Immortal Bag upside down. They looked again, everyone looked: what had been inside was not the monk at all, but Zheng Xuanxiu’s eldest disciple, his novice, his whole body gone stiff, out cold. “Chu Daoyuan,” said Zheng Xuanxiu, “how did you come to bag my disciple?” “I don’t know how this happened either,” said Chu Daoyuan. “I plainly bagged Crazy Ji!”

Just as they were talking, they saw the monk come in from outside, lurching and swaying, stumbling as he walked. “You fine fellow! So you really want to take on this monk? Come on, come on, come on! Let’s settle which of us is on top and which is underneath.” Chu Daoyuan looked, and his anger surged up. He went to grab the Eight-Treasure Cloud-Light Immortal Bag again, but saw that the monk had already picked it up off the floor. “I’ll bag you,” said the monk. “Holy monk, for my sake!” said Zheng Xuanxiu. “Chu Daoyuan,” said the monk, “you needn’t be so stubborn. I don’t suppose you know yet who I am. I’ll let you see.” The monk rubbed the crown of his head, and out shone the Buddha light, the inner light and the golden light. Chu Daoyuan looked and saw the monk sixteen feet tall, his head like a grain basket and his face like a crab’s shell, in a monk’s robe, his legs bare and his feet bare: it was the Arhat Zhijue. Chu Daoyuan was so frightened that he hurried to own his fault and give in. He knelt on the ground. “Holy monk, don’t stoop to my level. Your disciple had eyes but might as well have been blind, and didn’t know you, sir. Holy monk, I beg you, have mercy!” The monk roared with laughter. “Now that you know, that’s enough. Get up. Let’s talk inside.” Only then did they all go into the room and sit down. “I don’t want your treasure either,” said the monk. “I’ll give it back to you. You’re a good sort too. Today the two of us will go to the Bazha Shrine to catch the demon. Today the demon has gone and fetched reinforcements. Let’s go and see; we’ll catch it for sure.” “Very good,” said Chu Daoyuan. They all stayed at Sanqing Temple, and Zheng Xuanxiu had a vegetarian meal prepared. They ate, and well into the day Liu the Good came to invite the monk and the Daoist to go to the Bazha Shrine and catch the demon. He had a first-class banquet laid out at the Bazha Shrine. The monk came to the Bazha Shrine with Chu Daoyuan and Liu the Good, and when they had eaten supper, he told Liu the Good to watch the show from the room in the side hall as before.
