The sorcerer Daoists gather at Cangzhen Stronghold; The Divine Magician’s demon arts defeat Jinfeng

Now, Shao Huafeng, the Red-Haired Divine Officer, came to Cangzhen Stronghold with Deng Lianfang, the Soul-Chasing Attendant, and Han Qi, the Divine Magician. The bandits were delighted at the sight of them. “It was meant to be!” they said. When everyone had finished bowing, Shao Huafeng said, “Gentlemen, this is my sworn brother Deng Lianfang. He is a disciple of Yang Mingyuan, the Old Angler of the Milky Way, the Heavenly Demon among the Eight Demon Patriarchs of Shengjiao Hall on Mount Wanhua. And this is Han Qi, a disciple of Wang Jiufeng, the Woodcutter of Guilin, the Human Demon. Catching Crazy Ji will be as easy as turning over a hand; it won’t cost us the breath it takes to blow away ash.” “Let me tell you, Brother Shao,” said Han Qi, the Divine Magician, “I’ve got hold of one of my master’s Mother-and-Child Soul Cords. Even the great Golden Immortals and the arhats of the West can be bound with it. This Mother-and-Child Soul Cord is like no other: it has been through several sixty-year cycles, and if anyone else has one, it isn’t the real thing.” While they were talking, someone came in to report: “A monk has turned up outside. He’s blocking the temple gate and cursing for all he’s worth, and he’s calling on Patriarch Shao by name to come out.” “It must be Crazy Ji,” said Shao Huafeng. “It’s a monk with big eyebrows and a black face,” said the man. “Let me go out and have a look,” said Shao Huafeng. Before the words were out of his mouth, Li Wentong, one of the Mountain-Patrol Immortals, spoke up beside him: “Wait, Grand Master. It can only be some ignorant young nobody; why should you go yourself, sir? When there’s work to be done, the disciple takes the toil — why use an ox-cleaver to kill a chicken? Let me go out and catch him. It won’t cost me the breath it takes to blow away ash.” “You must be careful,” said Shao Huafeng. “No harm can come of it,” said Li Wentong. With that he swaggered off and came out through the temple gate. The mountain of Cangzhen Stronghold sat in the north and faced south. Inside the mouth of the pass, in front of the temple, lay a stretch of open, level ground, wide enough for a battlefield, or for drilling troops and practising formations — very broad indeed. Li Wentong came out and looked. Facing him stood a monk and a Daoist: the monk Jinfeng, Wuyuan, and Ma Daoxuan. “So it’s the monk Jinfeng,” said Li Wentong. “What business have you here?” “On my master’s orders,” said the monk Jinfeng, “I’ve come to catch your gang of sorcerers.” “Who is your master?” said Li Wentong. “Since you ask,” said the monk Jinfeng, “it’s the Elder Ji Gong.” Li Wentong sighed. “How did you come to join in Crazy Ji’s nonsense too? If you ask me, go back while you can, and don’t come meddling in what’s none of your business. This man of the mountains takes compassion as his gate and good thoughts as his root, and keeps a little of Heaven’s love of life; I can’t bear to take yours. If you won’t heed my kind advice, then don’t say I didn’t warn you, once I’ve caught you and it’s too late to be sorry.” The monk Jinfeng roared with laughter. “Vile creature! How much skill can you have, to dare talk so big and so loud? This monk will finish you off — killing evil men is itself a good thought.” At this the old Daoist’s anger surged up. He drew his sword, took his stand to the southeast, at Xun, the trigram of wind, drew a stroke on the ground with the sword and muttered a spell. At once a wild wind rose, stones rolled and sand flew, and it all swept straight at the monk Jinfeng.

The monk Jinfeng, Wuyuan, laughed. He reached into his pouch, took out a treasure called the Wind-Stilling Pearl and flung it up into the air. At once the wind dropped and the dust settled. Li Wentong was badly startled. The monk Jinfeng took back the Wind-Stilling Pearl and drew another pearl from his pouch, as red as fire. Muttering a spell, he hurled it straight at Li Wentong. There was a great crack and a flash of fire, and Li Wentong was burned till his skin was charred and his flesh burst. This pearl was called the Thunder-Fire Pearl. When the monk Jinfeng had struck down the old Daoist, he took back his treasure. Already someone had run into Cangzhen Stronghold to report: “Patriarch, sir, something terrible has happened! Daoist Master Li went out just now and asked the monk who he was, and he said he’s called the monk Jinfeng. Daoist Master Li worked his magic, and a wild wind rose, stones rolled and sand flew. The monk took out a treasure and flung it, and the wind dropped and the dust settled. Then the monk took out a pearl, red as fire — a flash of light, a great crack, and Daoist Master Li was burned till his skin was charred and his flesh burst.” When Shao Huafeng heard this, he was so furious that he howled and roared like thunder.

Someone beside him cried out, “Don’t be angry, Master. Let me go and avenge Brother Li and bring that monk back.” Shao Huafeng looked at the speaker: it was his second disciple, Wu Faxing, the Perfected One Miaodao. This old Daoist was a fellow disciple of the Wu Fatong of Qixing Temple we met before. Under Shao Huafeng he did whatever he pleased, and he too knew strange arts and demonic sorcery. At once he drew his sword and came out through the temple gate. He found the monk Jinfeng cursing at the top of his voice. “You bold monk, what nerve!” said Wu Faxing. “Do you know how dangerous your grandsire is?” “Who are you?” said the monk Jinfeng. “Since you ask, I’ll tell you,” said Wu Faxing. “Your grandsire here is surnamed Wu and named Faxing, and men call me the Perfected One Miaodao. Today you’re a moth flying into the flame, bringing your own death on yourself. Heaven has a road open and you won’t take it; hell has no gate and you go looking for one. Don’t blame this man of the mountains when I finish you off.” As he spoke he took an Immortal-Binding Rope out of his pouch and sent it up into the air, muttered a spell and cried, “By command!” With a swish, a streak of golden light shot straight at the monk Jinfeng. The monk opened his mouth and puffed out a breath of black vapour — this was his inner elixir, more than nine thousand years in the making — and at once the Immortal-Binding Rope dropped to the ground. Then, with a flick of his hand, the monk hurled out his Thunder-Fire Pearl. There was a great crack, and Wu Faxing was burned to death. The fellow had never done a good deed in his life, and today he got what was coming to him. Again someone ran into the temple to report. When Shao Huafeng heard that his disciple was dead, he was so furious that the Three Corpse Spirits within him leapt in rage and the bold breath of his five spirits shot up to the sky. “Very well, very well, very well! This man of the mountains will go out and fight him to the death!” “No need for you to go, Brother Shao,” said Han Qi, the Divine Magician, beside him. “Just watch my treasure. We’ll go together.”
