Swift retribution: a head swells up as big as a jar;A holy monk recommended: Chancellor Qin sends for Ji Gong

Now, Zhao Bin looked up and saw Wang Xing and his wife hanging there, badly hurt, and he could not help being greatly startled.

A word of explanation: this garden belonged to Qin Huan, the second son of Chancellor Qin. Qin Huan had never kept to his proper place. He relied on his father being chancellor of the reigning court, and with his elder brother dead, he was the only son left. He did just as he pleased. He kept a crowd of hired thugs and was forever carrying off other people’s young wives and daughters, and once he had carried a woman off, he kept her by force. If her family came looking for her, he had his thugs club them to death. If they went to the prefecture or the county to lodge a complaint, the yamen dared not accept the petition, for everyone knew he was the chancellor’s son. That was why people had given him a nickname: the Life-Chasing Ghost (Zhuiming Gui). Today he was in the garden reading — and even when he read, he did not read proper books, only lewd books and wicked tales. Just now he was reading how Emperor Ming of the Tang doted on Noble Consort Yang, and when he came to the best part, he slapped the table in wonder. Beside him stood his steward Qin Yu, the servant most in his favour. “Young master,” Qin Yu said, “why are you so pleased? What’s the good part?” “You wouldn’t know,” said Qin Huan. “No wonder the Tang poem says:

‘The Lady of Guo, favoured by her lord, rides through the palace gate at dawn;scorning the powder and rouge that would sully her colouring, she brushes on a touch of moth brow to face the Most High.’

This Noble Consort Yang really was a beauty.” “Young master,” said Qin Yu, “did you see her with your own eyes?” “You slave,” said Qin Huan, “talking pure nonsense! That was the Tang dynasty and this is the Song dynasty. How could I have seen her with my own eyes?” “There’s someone right now,” said Qin Yu, “who’s better-looking than Noble Consort Yang — truly rare under heaven, not another like her in the world. In all my born days I’ve seen just this one beauty like that. Not too tall, not too short; not too thin, not too plump; brows and eyes all lovely.” Qin Huan was no good man to begin with. At these words his eyes went fixed. “Qin Yu,” he said quickly, “where did you see her?” “There’s a man named Wang Xing who keeps a fruit stall at our mansion gate,” said Qin Yu. “His home is in Mutou Market. One day I’d bought two nanmu chairs and wanted to hire somebody to carry them home for me on a shoulder pole. As luck would have it, there was nobody suitable, so I went to Wang Xing’s house to find him. I knocked, and just then his wife came out. The moment I saw her — truly the pride of the nation, heavenly fragrant, rare under heaven, a beauty of the very first rank. Ever since the day I saw her I’ve meant to tell you, young master; I just never got the chance.” “What good is that?” said Qin Huan. “Pretty or not, she’s in Wang Xing’s house. Can she be counted as mine? Have you got any ideas? Find a way to get the beauty for me, and I’ll be sure to reward you well with silver.” “Young master,” said Qin Yu, “if you want this beauty, it isn’t hard. If you can spend two hundred taels of silver, this slave has a clever plan that guarantees the beauty in your hands this very day. Just so long as you’re willing to reward me with two hundred taels of silver, I’ll come up with a plan for you.” “Go to the accounts office and get it,” said Qin Huan. With the two hundred taels in hand, Qin Yu whispered in Qin Huan’s ear: “All you need do is thus and so.” Qin Huan heard him out and roared with laughter. “Go and call him, then.” Qin Yu went outside and saw Wang Xing just setting out his fruit stall. “Wang Xing, the young master has told me to call you.” Wang Xing hurriedly asked Guo Si, the street watchman, to mind his stall, and followed Qin Yu inside. Wang Xing was all smiles. He thought only that he was going to sell a few taels’ worth — the young master must want some fine fruit. They came to the Dangui Studio in the garden, and there was the Life-Chasing Ghost, Qin Huan, sitting under the veranda, with several house servants standing on either side. Wang Xing hurried over and saluted him. “Young master, you called for me. What can I do for you?” “Wang Xing,” said Qin Huan, “who is there in your family? How old are you? Tell me the truth.” Wang Xing did not know what this was all about. “Since the young master asks,” he said quickly, “at home there’s me, and my mother, who’s fifty this year. I’m twenty-two this year, and my wife is nineteen. There are just the three of us getting by at home.” At this the fellow Qin Huan burst into wild laughter. “Wang Xing, I hear your woman is quite a looker. I’ll give you two hundred taels of silver to marry another one, and you bring your woman over here to me.” Wang Xing shuddered at these words. “If I say no,” he thought, “he’s sure to have me clubbed to death.” He turned it over in his mind, and then he said, “Young master, sir, this humble one has something to put before you. I didn’t take a wife for anything else — it was to look after my old mother. When my old mother dies, I’ll send my wife to you, young master, and I wouldn’t dare take the two hundred taels either.” Hearing this, Qin Huan was just about to tell him to be off when Qin Yu came over. “Young master, don’t listen to him. He’s plainly putting you off. His mother is only fifty this year. If she lives another thirty years, his wife will be fifty herself. Wouldn’t he just be sending her here to live out her old age?” Qin Huan flew into a rage. “The cur! You dare fob off your young master to his face? It’s an outrage. Men! String him up for me!” The pack of vicious servants strung Wang Xing up. “Qin Yu,” said Qin Huan, “what’s your plan? Trick his woman into coming here for me. I’ll make him watch while I marry his woman.”

Qin Yu, the rascal, rolled his eyes, and a scheme came to him. He went outside, called over the third lad who waited on him and gave him a few instructions, then hired a sedan chair with two bearers, and this Third Master went along with it to the door of Wang Xing’s home. When he knocked, Wang Xing’s mother came out. “Who’s that knocking?” “Old lady,” said this Third Master, “you don’t recognize me? The name’s Zhang. I’ve got a bit of a job in the garden at Chancellor Qin’s mansion, and my brother Wang and I are the best of friends. This morning, just after my brother Wang set out his fruit stall, he fell down in a fit, foaming at the mouth and out of his senses. We carried him into the garden and got a doctor to look at him. The doctor says his illness is very bad, and he’ll only treat him if someone close to him is there at his side. My brother Wang sent me to fetch my sister-in-law.” “Very well,” said the old lady. “I’ll go and see.” “Old lady,” the man said, “at your age, once you got there you’d be all at sea. Besides, leaving a young woman to mind the house alone isn’t proper at all.” The old lady thought this made good sense. She went in and talked it over with her daughter-in-law, Madam Wu. Madam Wu was a woman who knew the Three Obediences and Four Virtues. When she heard that her husband was ill, her heart was in turmoil. She hurriedly changed her clothes. “I’ll go and see,” she said. Outside, she exchanged a few polite words, got into the sedan chair, and it was lifted up and carried straight to Chancellor Qin’s mansion. In the garden the chair was set down and its curtain lifted. Under the eaves of the main house Madam Wu saw a young gentleman sitting very upright, with her husband Wang Xing tied up beside him. She had no idea what it was all about. The young gentleman was very finely dressed. What did he look like? There is a poem to prove it:

When she had looked, Madam Wu said, “Young sir, who are you? Why have you tied up my husband?” A servant at the side said, “This is our young master, the son of His Excellency Chancellor Qin. Come over and kowtow, quick.” Before Madam Wu could answer, she heard Qin Huan say, “Lady, don’t be afraid. I meant it to be one stroke, two gains — perfect all round, three ways over. Who’d have thought this cur Wang Xing would turn unwilling? I have long admired your lovely face, little lady — truly a beauty to topple cities and kingdoms. I thought, staying with Wang Xing, you’ll never have more than plain tea and coarse food, and you’ll wear nothing but coarse cotton. So just now I called Wang Xing in to talk it over with him. I meant to give him two hundred taels of silver to marry another wife. Wouldn’t that be one stroke, two gains, perfect all round, three ways over? Two hundred taels is more than he could spend on another wife; he could even make a little fortune, and you’d be spared a hard life with him. You’d be brought here to wait on me, and I’d have someone after my own heart too. But when I talked it over with him, he was most unwilling. So I had him tied up.” At these words Madam Wu’s moth brows stood on end and her almond eyes went round with fury. “Young master,” she said, “the way I see it, if you let my husband and me go home now, that will be the end of it. You are the son of the chancellor of the reigning court, born into an official family, with a houseful of concubines at home. Why set yourself against the likes of us? It is only right, young master, for you to do good, gather blessings and cultivate virtue. If the censors come to hear of this, even His Lordship your father will be impeached.” Wang Xing spoke up from where he was too. “Young master, I do business at your mansion gate, and I’ve never offended you, sir. Have mercy and let my wife and me go!” Hearing this, Qin Huan only flew into a greater rage. He ordered his pack of vicious servants, “String the pair of them up for me and beat them!” His men strung up the young husband and wife and lashed them with whips. But the two had hardened their hearts: even if he beat them to death, they would never give in to him.

So it went on until evening. He just kept on drinking his wine and having the two of them beaten, when suddenly they heard that ghosts were haunting Chancellor Qin’s mansion in the compound to the east. One of his men reported, “Young master, come and look, quick!” At this Qin Huan hurriedly ordered his servants, “Lanterns ahead — let’s go and see.” The servants wanted to see the ghosts too, so they all went off together, and not a soul was left there. Wang Xing and his wife bore their pain. “Wife,” said Wang Xing, “you’ve been wronged like this along with me.” “It’s our lot to die here, the two of us,” said Madam Wu. “But after we’re dead, we’ll go before King Yama and accuse him, that’s all.” Just as they were speaking, someone came in from outside. Wang Xing opened his eyes and looked: it was Zhao Bin, Pick-It-from-a-Pocket. “Oh!” said Wang Xing. “Brother Zhao, save us!” Zhao Bin saw that Wang Xing and his wife were covered in wounds. He went over, first let Wang Xing down from above, then let Madam Wu down. Zhao Bin reached out to untie the knots of Wang Xing’s ropes, but he could not undo them; they were tied too tight. Just as he was growing frantic, someone behind him threw his arms around Zhao Bin. Zhao Bin meant to use the Shed-the-Robe move to throw the man head over heels so that he could get away. Who would have thought it? He used every ounce of strength he had, but the man behind him was like Mount Tai, holding Zhao Bin so that he could not move. A hero like him, and today even he was to be caught and taken.
