Shao Huafeng flees for refuge to Mount Wanhua;Deng Lianfang hunts down Ji Gong for a friend’s sake

Now, Chan Master Ji Gong had left Zhao Family Village and was walking on when a whirlwind came at him from up ahead. The monk gave a violent shiver and looked: the newcomer was Deng Lianfang, the Soul-Chasing Attendant, and he had someone with him. As soon as Deng Lianfang saw Ji Gong, he said, “Well, Crazy Ji! I’ve been looking for you like a man drilling ice for fire or pressing sand for oil. This was meant to be: I couldn’t find you, and here I’ve run right into you. Let’s see where you go today!” “Ooh,” said the monk, “and if you won’t let me go, then what?” “I’ll take you,” said Deng Lianfang, “and avenge my fellow disciple.”

A word of explanation: where had Deng Lianfang come from? Some time before, at Cangzhen Stronghold, they had all scattered and fled every which way. Shao Huafeng, the Red-Haired Divine Officer, had nowhere to turn. “Brother Shao,” said Deng Lianfang, the Soul-Chasing Attendant, “where are you going?” “Since you ask, worthy brother,” said Shao Huafeng, “just now I was sitting like a fool and standing like a fool, as if thunder had cracked over my head. I didn’t know if I was hungry or full; I was like an ant on a hot pan. Truly, there’s no road up to heaven and no door into the earth.” “Brother Shao,” said Deng Lianfang, “since you have nowhere to go, come back with me to Shengjiao Hall on Mount Wanhua. We’ll see the Demon Masters and ask them to go down the mountain to catch Crazy Ji and avenge our worthy brother Han Qi.” Shao Huafeng, the Red-Haired Divine Officer, heaved a sigh. “Worthy brother,” he said, “you and I are brothers who know each other’s hearts. You must lend me the strength of your arm and shelter me. You see how it is: now that my affairs have collapsed, all my guests and friends have gone off, each to some other place. Truly, when your luck is in, who won’t come? When your luck is out, who will? It’s just as they say: ten thousand taels of gold are easy to come by, but one friend who knows your heart is the hardest thing to find. Not only can I not get my revenge now — if I run into Crazy Ji again, I’ll be caught and taken, with nine chances of dying to one of living.” “Say no more, brother,” said Deng Lianfang. “Come with me to Shengjiao Hall on Mount Wanhua. Once they hear that Han Qi died at Crazy Ji’s hands, the Demon Masters are sure to avenge him. Why should you have to catch Crazy Ji?” Shao Huafeng had no choice. He went with Deng Lianfang, riding the foot-wind, and came to Mount Wanhua. On the mountain they halted and opened their eyes to look. This Shengjiao Hall was truly like the abode of immortals, a blaze of gold and green, all phoenix pavilions and dragon towers. No common mortal could ever reach this mountain.

It stood on the very top of a towering peak. Wild beasts roamed there in herds, and no ordinary mortal could come there either. Deng Lianfang and Shao Huafeng came to the main gate and knocked. Before long a boy came out from inside and opened the gate. He looked sixteen, his hair done up in two knots, with clear brows and fine eyes and a face like white jade. He wore a loose, wide-collared robe of blue silk, white socks and worry-free slippers, and held a fly whisk in his hand: truly he had the air of an immortal and the bones of a Daoist. When he saw Deng Lianfang, the boy said, “Brother, back already from gathering the lingzhi herb at Yingzhou in the East Sea? That was quick.” “Let me ask you,” said Deng Lianfang, “are the Demon Masters all in Shengjiao Hall?” “No,” said the little boy. “There’s only the Head Patriarch, Patriarch Lingxiao, the Recluse Woyun, in the Hall by himself.” “Good,” said Deng Lianfang. “I must go and see the Patriarch. It’s urgent. Brother Shao, come in with me.” Talking as they went, the two of them went inside. Shao Huafeng looked around: the courtyard was planted with pines and bamboo, a clean freshness drifted on the air, and the place had a refined charm all its own. The great hall of the main building on the north side was a Nine Dragon Hall nine bays wide. Right in the middle, up high, hung a board inscribed with three large characters: “Shengjiao Hall”. On either side hung a couplet that read:

“Follow the shaping work of what was before Heaven;ferry across the dull and stubborn of ages to come.”

Inside the hall stood a row of four Eight Immortals tables with eight chairs. At the second table counting from the east, in the chair at the head, sat a man. Standing, he would have been well over eight feet tall, with shoulders broad and square. On his head was a four-cornered carefree scarf of goose-yellow satin, embroidered with round flower medallions, its two embroidered ribbons fluttering. He wore a carefree cloak of goose-yellow embroidered with round flower medallions, and worry-free slippers on his feet. On his back he carried a Primal Unity Demon-Fire Banner, and at his side hung a Mourning Spirit Sword. Then Shao Huafeng looked at his face: pale gold, with heavy brows and round eyes, tufts of black hair over his ears and a full black beard. He looked ferocious in the extreme. When Shao Huafeng had taken this in, he did not dare go in, but stood outside the door. Deng Lianfang went in first and dropped to both knees. “Head Demon Master,” he said, “your disciple Deng Lianfang kowtows to you, Patriarch.”
