Now, when Chan Master Ji Gong had given the pearl bracelet to Zheng Tieniu’s disciples, he said, “I’ll give you another one, an easy one this time. Guess away.” “Go on, then,” said everyone. And Ji Gong said:
“A worm creeps into the phoenix’s nest, and the bird flies off;green grass sprouts on the heads of seven men;a heavy rain falls on a mountain laid on its side;half a friend has gone missing.
That’s four characters too. Whoever guesses it gets this robe of the old abbot’s.” Everyone thought it over. “A worm creeps into the phoenix’s nest, and the bird flies off — that’s the character for wind. Green grass sprouts on the heads of seven men — that’s flower. A heavy rain falls on a mountain laid on its side — that’s snow. Half a friend has gone missing — that’s moon.” Quite a few of them had guessed it, but Guangliang had the quickest tongue and blurted it out: the four characters were “wind, flowers, snow and moon.” “Right,” said Ji Gong, and sure enough he gave the robe to Guangliang. Then Ji Gong said, “A fire breaks out beyond the East Gate; inside, two men burn to death, leaving behind a son and a daughter; it burns on into the hour of the Rooster and the third watch. Those four lines make four characters too.” Someone standing by guessed it: the four characters were “stewed meat and good wine.” Ji Gong gave him a set of bedding. Then Ji Gong said:
“Three men go out with the sun to look at the flowers;a hundred friends turn out to be all one family.Grain and Fire, the two of them, sit down side by side;the sun sets in the west on two melons on the vine.”
Again someone standing by guessed it: the four characters were “spring, summer, autumn and winter.” Ji Gong gave away every last thing the old abbot had left behind, and kept not one piece for himself. A couple of days later, Zheng Tieniu heard that Ji Gong knew a good many gentry and wealthy households in Lin’an, high officials and elders of standing. Zongyin was a snob of a monk at heart. He talked it over with Guangliang: they would have Ji Gong invite people for them, and hold a charity feast at the temple. “Fine,” said Guangliang.

Guangliang knew that Ji Gong was acquainted with a good many rich men in Lin’an, and a charity feast like this might well leave a few taels of silver over. He hurried off to find Ji Gong. “Brother,” said Guangliang, “I want to talk something over with you. Now that the new abbot has come to our temple, we really ought to make a bit of a stir about it. I’m thinking of holding a charity feast here at the temple. Everyone you know is a rich man. If we hold one, would you send the invitations round to them all and invite them for us?” “Fine by me,” said Ji Gong, “but there’s one thing. The people I know are all gentry and wealthy households. If we’re holding a charity feast, we’ll need top-grade banquets piled high with delicacies of the sea — bird’s-nest and shark’s-fin feasts at eight taels a table, and a table laid for every guest who comes. There’s no telling how much incense money they’ll give; a single patron might give tens of thousands of taels. You know that back when I was raising alms for the Great Stele Tower, one man alone gave ten thousand taels. If we hold this feast, then whatever each guest gives, every servant he brings along gets a string of cash as a tip, and anyone who comes by sedan chair brings his bearers, and they get a string apiece too. Do it my way and I’ll invite them; otherwise I’m staying out of it. We mustn’t have people looking down on us.”

Guangliang thought it over: whatever happened, they couldn’t lose by it. “Then we’ll do it all your way,” he said. “How many invitation cards do you want?” “Let’s say a hundred,” said Ji Gong. Guangliang was delighted to hear it. They chose the tenth of the month. First he took out the five thousand taels Zongyin had given him to use as capital: two thousand to lay in the banquets, two thousand set aside for tips and odd expenses, and a thousand for putting up the mat-sheds, running the affair and buying sundries. Everything was arranged just so. Who would have thought that when Ji Gong took the hundred cards and sealed them up, he let no one see them? What was written inside was this: “On the tenth day of this month, to celebrate the installation of the venerable abbot Zongyin, an altar will be set up. We respectfully request the honour of your presence that day, and beg you to come early to offer incense. With respectful greetings from the resident monks Zongyin, Guangliang and Daoji. The feast will be laid inside Lingyin Temple. Each guest at the charity feast is to bring no more than twenty-four coppers, sealed in an envelope. Any who bring more will be heavily fined.”
