An imperial decree grants a title and words in the Emperor’s own hand;Newly come to Mount Jin, he meets the gathered demons

Now, the Empress Dowager had sent down her command to summon Warden Daoji, and Dehui, the prior, hurried off to look for Ji Gong everywhere. He found him behind the temple, playing with a few children. Several families lived back there, and some of their little ones loved joking and laughing with Ji Gong. Dehui came up close. “Brother Ji,” he said, “the Empress Dowager has come to burn incense.” “So the Empress Dowager has come to burn incense,” said Ji Gong. “What’s that to do with me?” “The Empress Dowager is sending for you!” said Dehui. “What does she want me for?” said Ji Gong. “I don’t know,” said Dehui. “In that case,” said Ji Gong, “I’ll go and have a look.” “Don’t go like that!” said Dehui. “First go into the temple, wash your face, change your clothes and put on a monk’s cap, and then go, and be very respectful. If you give offence to the Empress Dowager, how could any of us bear the blame?” “Never mind,” said Ji Gong. “I’ll go just as I am. I won’t wash my face either. With a wind this strong, I’m afraid it would blow my face away.” Dehui talked and talked, but he would not listen, so Dehui led him round to the front, where they first saw Chancellor Qin. Ji Gong was Chancellor Qin’s substitute monk, and the chancellor had long known that Ji Gong was a bit mad. Chancellor Qin went before the Empress Dowager first, made his obeisance and said, “May it please Your Majesty, Warden Daoji is somewhat mad, and his clothes are in tatters. I fear he may give offence to Your Majesty.” “No matter,” said the Empress Dowager. “I shan’t hold it against him. Just have him come and see me.” Chancellor Qin came down and said, “Holy monk, show a little respect. On no account be careless.”

Ji Gong roared with laughter and followed him before the Empress Dowager. She looked at him: he was exactly like the monk she had seen in her dream.

Ji Gong saluted her with joined palms. “Are you Warden Daoji?” said the Empress Dowager. The monk said:
