Now, the Eight Demons had set up the Demon-Fire Golden-Light Formation and were refining the two arhats in the heart of it. Suddenly a cry of “Limitless Buddha!” came from outside. The newcomer was none other than Chu Daoyuan, the Divine Child, with the Demon-Slaying Sword clasped to his breast. At the sight of him the Eight Demons were so frightened their souls fled a thousand miles.
書中交代：褚道緣由江口跟老仙翁分手，老仙翁上九松山松泉寺去找長眉羅漢借降魔杵。褚道緣夠奔萬松山雲霞觀，在道路上急似箭頭，恨不能肋生雙翅，駕起趁腳風，一天趕到萬松山。這座山極高，每逢下過雨後，由山縫裡冒出白煙就是雲。這座山原是一座寶山，當初褚道緣在這廟裡當道童，人也聰明，李涵齡也甚喜愛他。今天褚道緣來到廟門首，自己一想我先別進去，我已然拜了濟公，我要明說要斬魔劍，許我師爺爺不肯給我。我到裡面必須見機而作。自己想罷，到了角門拍了兩下，只聽裡面說：「來了。」門開了，褚道緣一看，認識是紫霞真人李涵齡的徒弟道童清風。這廟中有兩個童子，一名清風，一名明月。和褚道緣都算是同門師兄弟，今日一見，褚道緣連忙施禮，說：「師兄你從哪裡來？我聽你說歸了三寶佛門，是有這樣一件事嗎？」

A word of explanation: at the river mouth Chu Daoyuan had parted from the Old Immortal Elder, who went up to Songquan Temple on Mount Jiusong to borrow the Demon-Subduing Pestle from the Long-Browed Arhat. Chu Daoyuan made straight for Yunxia Temple on Mount Wansong. On the road he flew like an arrow, wishing he could sprout a pair of wings from his ribs; he raised the foot-wind and reached Mount Wansong in a single day. This mountain was extremely high, and whenever rain had fallen, white smoke rose from the cracks in the rock, and that was cloud. It was, in fact, a treasure mountain. In the old days Chu Daoyuan had been an acolyte in this temple; he was a clever lad, and Li Hanling had been very fond of him. Now, arriving at the temple gate, Chu Daoyuan thought to himself: “I’d better not go in just yet. I’ve already taken Ji Gong as my master. If I come straight out and ask for the Demon-Slaying Sword, my grand-master may well refuse me. Once I’m inside I’ll have to watch for my chance and act on it.” His mind made up, he went to the side gate and knocked twice. “Coming,” said a voice inside. The gate opened, and Chu Daoyuan saw it was Qingfeng, the acolyte and disciple of Li Hanling, the Perfected One Zixia. There were two boys in this temple, one called Qingfeng and the other Mingyue. They and Chu Daoyuan counted as brothers of the same school. Meeting today, Chu Daoyuan hurried to bow, and Qingfeng said, “Brother, where have you come from? I heard you’d gone over to the Three Jewels and the gate of the Buddha. Is that really so?”
褚道緣把拜濟公之故一說，二人往裡走了。道緣問：「師爺他老人家在那院中嗎？」清風說：「未在廟中，走了有十數日，去朝北海去了，留我二人看廟，師兄到此有什麼事嗎？」褚道緣說：「到屋中我慢慢告訴你。」到了東院北上房，明月接見行禮已畢，三人落座。清風叫明月倒茶去，褚道緣本是心中有事著急，說：「師弟，我今來是為我師父濟公，他老人家本是西方羅漢，因為多管閒事，在常州地方有一座慈雲觀，有一個老道叫赤發靈官邵華風，招軍買馬，聚草屯糧，陷害黎民百姓。濟公幫著常州府兵敗慈雲觀。邵華風逃在萬花山聖教堂，我有個小師兄叫悟禪，到萬花山聖教堂去拿邵華風，惹了八魔。悟禪放火燒了聖教堂，跟八魔結下了冤仇。八魔現在金山寺擺魔火金光陣，把濟公煉到陣內，要一過四五天，把羅漢的金光煉散了，濟公就得沒命。他老人家本是一位務正參修的人，可惜要喪在八魔之手。我同老仙翁給解勸，老仙翁跟八魔翻了臉，把老仙翁的乾坤奧妙大葫蘆給炸了。現在老仙翁去上九松山松泉寺找靈空長老求降魔寶杵，我來找師爺爺借斬魔劍，非得這兩種寶貝，拿不了八魔。既是真人沒在家，二位師弟慈悲慈悲，把斬魔劍借給我使一使。我去救了濟公長老，我趕緊就給送回來，我也不能要祖師爺的寶貝。」

Chu Daoyuan told him how he had come to take Ji Gong as his master, and the two of them went inside. “Is the grand-master in his courtyard?” Daoyuan asked. “He isn’t in the temple,” said Qingfeng. “He left a dozen-odd days ago to pay a visit to the North Sea, and left the two of us to mind the temple. What brings you here, Brother?” “Let’s get indoors and I’ll tell you properly,” said Chu Daoyuan. They came to the main room on the north side of the east courtyard, where Mingyue came out to meet him, and when they had finished their greetings the three sat down. Qingfeng told Mingyue to go and pour tea. Chu Daoyuan, with something urgent on his mind, said, “Little brother, I’ve come today for my master, Ji Gong. He is really one of the arhats of the West, and he’s always meddling in other people’s business. In Changzhou there’s a Ciyun Temple, and an old Daoist there called Shao Huafeng, the Red-Haired Divine Officer, was raising troops and buying horses, stockpiling fodder and grain, and doing harm to the common people. Ji Gong helped the troops of Changzhou Prefecture defeat Ciyun Temple. Shao Huafeng fled to Shengjiao Hall on Mount Wanhua. I have a young senior brother-disciple called Wuchan, and he went to Shengjiao Hall on Mount Wanhua to catch Shao Huafeng and stirred up the Eight Demons. Wuchan set fire to Shengjiao Hall, and so he made enemies of the Eight Demons. Now the Eight Demons have set up the Demon-Fire Golden-Light Formation at Jinshan Temple and caught Ji Gong in it to refine him. Give it four or five days and the arhat’s golden light will be refined away, and Ji Gong will lose his life. He’s a man who has truly given himself to cultivation, and what a pity it would be for him to die at the hands of the Eight Demons. The Old Immortal Elder and I tried to talk them round, but the Old Immortal Elder fell out with the Eight Demons, and they blew his Great Gourd of Cosmic Mysteries to pieces. Now the Old Immortal Elder has gone to Songquan Temple on Mount Jiusong to beg the Demon-Subduing Pestle from Elder Lingkong, and I’ve come to borrow the Demon-Slaying Sword from the grand-master. Without these two treasures there’s no catching the Eight Demons. Since the Perfected One isn’t at home, have mercy, my two little brothers, and lend me the Demon-Slaying Sword for a while. Once I’ve rescued Elder Ji Gong I’ll bring it straight back. I’d never keep our Patriarch’s treasure for myself.”
