Now, Zhang Miaoxing was in the main hall working his magic, trying to seize Ji Gong’s soul, and never dreamed that Ji Gong would come in person. At the sight of him the Daoist flew into a rage. “You crazy monk! I was summoning your soul — how is it you’ve come in the flesh?”

A word of explanation: after the Daoist left the Liang house in Yunlan Town, Squire Liang failed to catch up with him and took it for granted that Ji Gong was dead. But when he got back to the study, there was Ji Gong sitting in the room, drinking. Squire Liang was overjoyed. “Holy monk, you’re not dead after all? The Daoist said he had seized your soul and carried it off.” “He’s carried off my soul and your son’s soul, sure enough,” said Ji Gong. “Tonight I’ll go and find him!” “No need,” said the Old Squire. “He’s a man who has left the world, and if he does evil like this, Heaven is bound to pay him back sooner or later. Holy monk, don’t stoop to his level. If you ask me, let him be.” Ji Gong made no reply and sat there drinking until it grew dark. “I’m just going outside to relieve myself,” Ji Gong said. “I’ll be back in a moment.” The Old Squire believed him.

The monk left the Liang house and headed straight for Mount Wuxian. When he reached Xiangyun Temple, he found the Daoist in the middle of his rite. Ji Gong had seen it all clearly when Chen Liang arrived, too. When the Daoist wrote his charms and chanted his spells for the second time, Ji Gong came along on the wind to the front of the altar table. By rights the Daoist ought to have seen the truth for himself: he had set out to summon a soul and had summoned the man himself, which showed that Ji Gong’s attainments were no small thing. Instead the Daoist flew into a towering rage. He pointed his sword and said, “Crazy monk, I was begging alms of Liang Wancang. What business is that of yours? You’ve ruined my great work for no reason. What gall! If you know what’s good for you, you’ll kneel before my altar today, knock your head on the ground and call me Venerable Master three times, and this man of the mountains, who has some regard for life, will spare you. If not, I’ll finish you off with my sword on the spot!” “You wicked sorcerer!” said Ji Gong. “You make mischief here with your devilry, you squeeze alms out of Liang Wancang for no reason, and you still dare be so insolent when you see me! The more this monk talks, the angrier he gets.” Without warning, Ji Gong slapped the Daoist across the face. The slap left the Daoist’s face burning and his temper boiling over. He swung his sword and hacked straight down at Ji Gong’s head.

The two of them went at it right there in front of the main hall, each using what powers he had. The Daoist wanted nothing more than to cut the monk down with one stroke, but the monk kept circling round him this way and that, fending him off here, pinching him there, until the Daoist was so furious he kept bellowing, “Wah-ya-ya!” The Daoist sprang to one side, took a magic treasure out of his pouch, muttered an incantation and cried, “By command!” A gleaming white object flew at Ji Gong. The Lord Arhat opened his eyes wide and looked: halfway up in the air there was a swishing rush, and a gleaming white thing was hurtling at the crown of his head. Ji Gong looked and recognized the treasure. It was called the Primal Unity Wishing Stone. This stone could grow large or small: large, it could truly reach tens of feet across; small, it was no bigger than a hen’s egg and could be carried in a pouch. When this stone struck someone, it never failed to crack his skull and draw blood. Chan Master Ji Gong pointed at it and chanted the six-syllable mantra: “Om mani padme hum! Om! By command — he!” The stone spun round and round, returned to its true form and dropped into Ji Gong’s sleeve. Seeing Ji Gong break his magic, the Daoist was so enraged that the Three Corpse Spirits leapt within him and smoke poured from all seven openings of his head. He reached in and took out another object. Standing due north, he flourished his sword, chanted a spell and formed a magic hand sign, and a weird wind rose from the ground, so eerie it made the hair stand on end. Ji Gong opened his eyes again and looked. It was a fierce striped tiger, shaking its head and lashing its tail, springing at Ji Gong. The arhat looked: a terrible beast indeed. Truly:
Big of head and round of ear, small of tail, its whole hide a brocade no brush could paint.

At the sight, Ji Gong burst out laughing. “You wretch! Showing off a trick like this in front of me — that’s selling water by the riverside.” As he spoke he pointed his finger, and the tiger turned into a paper tiger, its true form revealed. Seeing two of his treasures broken one after the other, the Daoist could not hold his temper down. “Very well, monk, you are bold indeed! I’ll show you what this man of the mountains can do.” He reached into his pouch, took out an Immortal-Binding Rope and held it up on his palm. “Man has no heart to harm the tiger, but the tiger means to hurt the man,” said the Daoist. “I never meant to harm you. You brought this on yourself, courting death again and again, so don’t blame this man of the mountains. Today I shall break my vow against killing!” This Immortal-Binding Rope of his was deadly beyond compare: no matter what demon or spirit it was, once bound it had to show its true form. When the monk saw it, he cried, “Oh no! Oh no!” The Daoist chanted a spell and tossed the rope into the air. All that could be seen was golden light swirling as it swooped on Ji Gong.

“Help!” Ji Gong yelled over and over. “This is terrible! He’s tying up this monk!” In the blink of an eye the rope had bound the monk three times round, and the monk toppled over. Zhang Miaoxing roared with laughter. “Crazy monk, I took you for a man of great powers. So you’re nothing but an ignorant fool after all. Let me finish you off.” As he said this, the Daoist raised his sword and hacked at the monk’s neck. The blade left a white mark, and the monk lay there with his eyes open, watching the Daoist and saying nothing; the sword had not cut him at all. “Strange!” the Daoist thought. “How can my sword not cut the monk?” He hacked several more times in a row, and still it would not cut. Then it dawned on the Daoist, and a thought stirred in his heart: “Could this be a fake?” With that he looked again: what the Immortal-Binding Rope had bound was a stone incense burner. He looked for the monk, but there was no trace of him. The Daoist was searching everywhere when the monk plucked at him from behind. The Daoist turned round, so furious he shouted, “You crazy monk, you’ll be the death of me! Today it’s you or me!” He reached into the incense burner and took out a lit stick of incense. A heap of firewood and straw lay piled beside the main hall; chanting a fire spell, he set it alight, and a ball of fire came rushing at Ji Gong. Today the Daoist meant to strike to kill: he would burn the monk to death with real fire. The Daoist urged it on with a spell, and the ball of fire hurtled at Ji Gong. Ji Gong pointed his finger and chanted, “Om mani padme hum! Om! By command — he!” The ball of fire rolled back and rushed at the Daoist. His beard caught fire, his hair caught fire, his clothes caught fire, and he ran into the main hall. It was only fitting that the Daoist should meet his retribution. The fire caught the main hall, and in a moment the earthly fire drew down heavenly fire. Flames leapt to the sky, fire-doves and fire-snakes darted every which way, and the Daoist was burned inside, his bones turned to ash. The fire spread even to the east and west side halls. The monk paid him no heed. First he went and picked up the straw man the Daoist had made to harm Liang Shiyuan, pulled out the seven needles and gathered Liang Shiyuan’s soul into his sleeve. Then, without caring whether Liu Miaotong lived or died, the monk walked straight out.

At this moment Chen Liang was in the east side room, and he had seen it all clearly. When he saw the fire about to spread to the side rooms, he kicked out the window, ran out and gave chase. When the monk Ji Gong walked fast, Chen Liang followed fast; when the monk walked slowly, Chen Liang followed slowly. He followed the monk all the way to Yunlan Town and saw Ji Gong make for Squire Liang’s gate. There were servants at the gate, and when one of them saw the monk come back, he said, “Holy monk, where did you go? My master has been worried sick waiting.” “Good,” said the monk, and strode inside to the study. When Squire Liang saw him, he said, “Holy monk, sir, where did you go?” “I went to find your son’s soul,” said the monk, “and now I’ve brought your son’s soul back.” As he spoke, Ji Gong went into Liang Shiyuan’s room. Liang Shiyuan lay there unconscious. Ji Gong at once put his soul back into its shell, and after a little while Liang Shiyuan could move again. The Old Squire had a feast laid out in the outer room to entertain Ji Gong. The two of them sat down, and when they had drunk three or four cups, Ji Gong asked, “Squire, do you get thieves round here?” “No, I don’t get thieves,” said Squire Liang. “The good thieves know mine is a kind and decent household and wouldn’t want to rob me, and the low thieves can’t get into this house of mine.” “Good,” said Ji Gong. “Let me name a few good thieves. See if you know them.” “I don’t know who they are,” said Squire Liang. Meanwhile, unseen, Chen Liang had been listening on the roof for a long while. Hearing that some thieves were about to be named, his heart gave a jump, and he wondered which heroes of the road Ji Gong meant. He heard the monk say, “There’s one called Liu Rui, No Footprints in the Snow (Taxue Wuhen). Have you heard of him?” “No,” said Squire Liang. “This man’s known to all as No Footprints in the Snow,” said Ji Gong, “because he walks across snowy ground without leaving a single footprint. How light is that?” “Light indeed,” said Squire Liang, “to walk on snow and leave no footprints.” “He walks on snow without leaving footprints,” said Ji Gong, “but he carries a broom and sweeps as he goes.” That made Squire Liang laugh. “Then there’s Tao Fang, Duckweed Treader, Water Crosser (Dengping Dushui),” the monk went on. “This man can walk across the surface of water without sinking in.” “The world is full of clever people like that,” said Squire Liang, “but they really are rare. I’ve never actually seen one.” “It’s nothing so remarkable,” said Ji Gong. “It’s in winter, when the water’s frozen.” “In winter even I can do that,” said the squire. “Liang Shiyuan is well now,” said the monk. “Tomorrow I’ll hurry back to Lin’an.” “Holy monk, what’s the hurry?” said Squire Liang. “I want to keep you here a few more days, Master, to repay you for saving my son’s life.” “Call a servant in,” said Ji Gong. Liang Fu came over. The monk whispered this and that in his ear, and Liang Fu went out. Chen Liang, watching in secret from the roof, had heard Ji Gong tell those jokes, and the two men he spoke of were both Chen Liang’s friends. “He’s a man who has left the world,” he said to himself. “How does he come to know the affairs of us greenwood men?” He was still turning this over when he saw people closing in on all four sides. Liang Fu had brought thirty or forty men — house guards, compound watchmen, night watchmen and able-bodied hands — each carrying a saber, a spear or some other weapon, all shouting to seize the man on the roof! Chen Liang got quite a fright. It turned out that Ji Gong had told Liang Fu to do this and that: to have men catch someone on the quiet. Chen Liang stood on the roof, raised the saber in his hand and said, “Hey! Get out of my way, all of you. I’m no thief — I’m only passing through. Whoever stands in my way dies; whoever keeps clear lives.” He sprang down from the roof, and Ji Gong came out of the house. Thus it was that:
“The hero came at last to tread the ground of the Three Jewels;the arhat threw wide the gate of the Great Vehicle.”
