At the Tianxing Inn, magic is worked and the thief comes into view;At an inn in a little market town, wine is drunk and an old friend is met

Now, when Lei Ming saw Ji Gong drink the wine and topple over, he gave a great laugh. “Monk, I took you for a living immortal who knew everything before it happened. Turns out I’ve got you under my thumb too!” “Second Brother,” said Chen Liang, “what’s all this about?” “Third Brother,” said Lei Ming, “I put knockout drug in the wine and laid him out cold. In a bit I’ll tie him up by the road, and when he comes round I’ll make a fool of him and see what he has to say to me then.” At this Chen Liang said, “Second Brother, this isn’t right. He’s my master. You shouldn’t do it.” Lei Ming made no answer. He picked up the monk and strode off east. Chen Liang supposed Lei Ming would only carry the monk to the side of the road. How could he have known that when Lei Ming reached the east bank, he would let go, fling the monk down into the water, then turn on his heel and walk off west? Chen Liang came chasing after him and saw Lei Ming throw the monk in. He was just about to panic when the monk bobbed up, half his body out of the water, baring his teeth, and gave Chen Liang a fright. “Second Brother, this isn’t right,” said Chen Liang. “You’ve stirred up big trouble. The venerable Ji Gong has vast supernatural powers and boundless magic. You’ll pay for this!” “Third Brother, stop your nonsense,” said Lei Ming. “I’ve knocked him out with the drug and thrown him in the water. What magic can he have now? Come with me.” Chen Liang had no choice but to follow Lei Ming north. When they had gone about two li, there was a ridge of earth ahead. The two had just climbed onto it when they heard someone say, “What a wrongful death I’ve died! They didn’t send me to see King Yama, they sent me to see the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas. The Dragon King wasn’t home, and the river-patrol yaksha thought I was too filthy and threw me out. No temple big or small will take me in. What a bitter death I’ve died! I’ll just wait here for the man who did me in. He and I are sworn enemies, and I’ll strangle him!” Lei Ming and Chen Liang looked up, and it was Ji Gong. The two were frightened out of their wits. They turned tail and ran south, and the monk came shuffling after them. When they ran fast, the monk followed fast; when they ran slow, the monk followed slow. Lei Ming and Chen Liang put on a burst of speed and ran five or six li before at last they could no longer hear the slap of straw sandals. They were drenched in sweat. “Number Three,” said Lei Ming, “let’s rest a bit in that wood up ahead.” The moment they reached the wood, the monk said, “So you two have finally come!” They looked, saw it was Ji Gong, turned in terror and ran, and the monk came after them. After a great struggle they shook him off, but just as they came back to the ridge, there stood the monk on top of it. “Finally!” Lei Ming and Chen Liang ran back the other way, wondering to themselves, “How did the monk get ahead of us again?” They ran back to the wood, and the monk was there before them. “Finally!” Back and forth they ran, six times in all. “Let’s stop running like this,” said Lei Ming. “We’ll head southwest.” The two took the fork to the southwest, and at long last they could no longer hear the straw sandals. By now they were truly worn out. Seeing a wood ahead, Lei Ming said, “Number Three, let’s climb up a tree to rest and hide.” Even as he spoke he started climbing, but he was only halfway up when the monk spoke from the tree: “Now where do you think you’re running?” He pointed a finger and held Lei Ming fast with the immobilizing spell. The monk climbed down. “You fine fellow! I won’t beat you and I won’t curse you. I’ll call up scorpions to sting you.” He recited a spell, and countless big dark scorpions came swarming over the ground. The monk took off his hat. “I’m going to look for scorpions. Liang’er, keep watch on him for me.” With that he went off east by himself.

A word of explanation: Yang Meng, Chen Xiao and the two head constables, together with Fu Youde, had waited a long time in the private room. When Ji Gong did not come downstairs, they all went up to look, and there was nobody there. “Waiter,” said Chai Yuanlu, “where’s that monk of ours?” “He left long ago,” said the waiter. “And that Master Lei even paid the bill for your private room.” At this Chai Yuanlu said, “You two escort masters, help us go to the Tongshun Inn and make an arrest.” Yang Meng and Chen Xiao nodded. “Certainly.” With Fu Youde, the five of them left the tavern and went straight to the Tongshun Inn. At the inn gate Head Constable Chai went to the counter. “Sorry to trouble you. Is there a man surnamed Hua staying at your inn?” “That’s right,” said the manager. “He left yesterday.” At this Chai Yuanlu said, “That’s done it! The thief’s gone!” “Never mind,” said Chen Xiao. “The venerable Ji Gong has vast supernatural powers and boundless magic. Catching a thief like that won’t cost him the breath it takes to blow away ash; it’s as easy as turning over your hand. You two head constables, come with us to the Tianxing Inn and have a look, and we’ll talk it over later.”

The two head constables had no choice, and together with Fu Youde they came to the Tianxing Inn. They found the traveller Wang Zhong lying in bed, groaning without stop. “Congratulations, sir!” said Chen Xiao. “Ah,” said Wang Zhong, “nothing in this world is harder to bear than being parted by death. I’m about to become an aggrieved ghost in a strange land, a lonely soul far from home. What is there to congratulate?” “I’ve brought the monk Ji Gong of Lingyin Temple to treat you,” said Chen Xiao. “He has vast supernatural powers; any illness he lays a hand on is cured. He’ll be here shortly.” As it happened, one of the inn attendants overheard this. The manager of the inn had grown a carbuncle on the small of his back as big as the mouth of a bowl, and the pain was killing him. The attendant told the manager, “Go and wait at the gate. When you see the monk, kowtow to him and beg him to treat you. That’s the living Buddha Ji Gong. Any illness he lays a hand on is cured.” Sure enough, the manager went to the gate, brought out a bench and waited. As it happened, a monk came along, and the manager dropped to the ground and kowtowed. “Holy monk, save my life!” When he had finished kowtowing, he looked and saw it was the second monk from the Sanguan Shrine next door. “What am I kowtowing to you for?” said the manager. “I don’t know why you’re kowtowing to me,” said the second monk. “I’m waiting for the monk Ji Gong,” said the manager. And the second monk went on his way.
