Now, He Qing lay in the young master’s bedroom. It was the second drum of the night, and he heard a wild gust of wind outside. He Qing had never really known how to catch demons, and he was secretly afraid. “If a demon really does come,” he said to himself, “and this talisman is no use, I’ll kick out the window and run for it while I can.” Just as he was thinking this, he heard a wooden clack-clack outside, and in came a woman with a thousand charms and a hundred graces, alluring in ten thousand ways. What did she look like? There is a verse of praise to prove it:

Gust on gust, a fragrant breeze blows in your face;note on note, the twitter of swallows and the song of orioles. So dainty, so dewy, her willow-leaf brows and almond eyes;so soft, so fresh, her powdered face and peach-blossom cheeks. In her cherry mouth a row of jade is set;her powdered face and fragrant cheeks a joy to see.She wears a blue gown that fits her close, and her fragrant skirt just covers her golden lotuses;Just like Chang’e come down from her jade terrace, like an immortal descending to the world below.

He Qing took one look and said to himself, “So this is the demon.” He heard the woman say, “Who is so bold as to come into the Immortal Lady’s bedroom?” Talking as she came, she walked on in. She had just stepped through the door of the inner room when the talisman gave off a ray of golden light that wreathed and swirled and shot straight at her. With a cry of “Aiya!” the woman turned round and fled. He Qing rushed after her and struck with his blade, and off came a red embroidered shoe, dripping with fresh blood. “I’ve caught the demon!” said He Qing. Squire Wang had a great many servants waiting in the other rooms with the lamps lit, and they heard He Qing shout, “Caught it!”
