Working the Buddha’s law, the monk quietly sets out to save Hua Yunlong;Seeing a beauty, the lecherous thief conceives wicked thoughts

Now, Hua Yunlong had come up from behind and killed the monk with one stroke of his saber. When he looked, the monk was no stranger at all: it was his own sworn elder brother, Zheng Tianfu, the Ghost in the Clouds, one of the Five Ghosts of Xichuan Circuit. Hua Yunlong looked at him and stood dumbfounded for a long while. But the deed was done and there was nothing for it: the dead cannot come back to life.

A word of explanation: in all his life, this villain had never done one good deed either.

In this Tale of Ji Gong, Ji Gong has come into the world to save it. Loyal ministers and dutiful sons, faithful husbands and chaste wives are sure to meet with danger and come through it into good fortune; corrupt officials and their toadies, lechers and bullies, are sure to get their retribution in the end. The storyteller writes this way to make his readers forsake evil and do good, and to wake the world up. When loyal ministers and righteous men run into trouble, for instance, those who hear or read the story wish they could rescue them that very moment. And why is it that any man may strike down a rebel minister or a villainous son? Because there the human heart is fair. From ancient times to now it has been one and the same. Zheng Tianfu’s retribution had come due, and he died in a muddle, without knowing what had hit him. Nor had Hua Yunlong seen clearly who it was before he cut the villain down with one stroke. The woman took Hua Yunlong for a good man and said quickly, “Thank heaven for you, brave sir, for saving me. My married name is Li; I was born a Liu. I had been staying with my own family, and my brother Liu Si was taking me back to my husband’s home. I was riding a donkey, and as we passed the gate of this temple, who should we meet but this villain of a monk. He tied my brother up and put him in the west wing. He dragged me in here and meant to rape me. Thank heaven you killed the villain, sir. When I get home, my whole family will be grateful for your kindness, my benefactor.” Hua Yunlong gave a faint smile. “Listen to me, little lady,” he said. “This monk I’ve killed is no stranger either. He’s called Zheng Tianfu, the Ghost in the Clouds, and he’s my sworn brother. I didn’t look properly and killed him by mistake. Well, he’s dead now. You needn’t go anywhere. You and I will be man and wife. I’ll kill your brother, and the two of us can just live here in this temple.” When the woman heard this she knew he was no good man either, and she screamed, “Help! Help! He’s going to take me by force!” “Scream and I’ll kill you,” said Hua Yunlong. “Kill me, then,” said the woman. “I’d sooner be dead.” Hua Yunlong saw that she was rather pretty; the villain’s lust was roused, and he could not bring himself to kill her just like that. Just at that moment there came a loud laugh from outside the window, and a voice said, “Well, Hua Yunlong! So this is what you get up to, you cur! And to think Brother Yang sent out the greenwood summons and passed round the greenwood arrow to celebrate your Flower of Rectitude and Chastity — what a waste! You’ve a man’s face and a beast’s heart. I’ll finish you off first.”
