話說濟公說變戲法，平地抓鬼。一伸手，抓出一個賊人來。和尚說：「老爺你瞧，抓出鬼來了。」老爺立刻吩咐手下人，將賊人捆上。老爺一問，賊人說：「我叫無形太歲馬金川，前來殺官盜印。」原是蓬頭鬼惲芳派九朵梅花孫伯虎，無形太歲馬金川兩個人，一個殺官，一個盜印。馬金川受過異人的傳授，他有十二道隱身符。按著子、丑、寅、卯、辰、巳、午、未、申、酉、戌、亥十二個時辰貼在腦袋上，誰也看不見他。今天賊人來，聽家人說，老爺同濟公在書房喝酒，賊人就奔書房來了。又聽見濟公說要變玉女臨凡，賊人要瞧著學學戲法，他邁步進了書房。別人都瞧不見有人進來，和尚可瞧見了。賊人剛往桌底下要鑽，和尚一伸手，把他那道符揭下來。大眾這才瞧見，把賊人捆上。老爺問明白，把賊人釘鐐入獄，和尚吃了個酒足飯飽，站起身來說：「周瑞、羅鑣你等跟我走。」

Now, Ji Gong had said he would do a conjuring trick, Catching a Ghost out of Thin Air, and with one reach of his hand he pulled out a thief. “Look, Your Honour,” said the monk. “I’ve caught a ghost.” His Honour at once ordered his men to tie the thief up. When His Honour questioned him, the thief said, “I’m called Ma Jinchuan, the Invisible Grand Duke. I came to kill the official and steal the seal.” It turned out that Yun Fang the Tousle-Headed Ghost had sent two men, Sun Bohu the Nine Plum Blossoms and Ma Jinchuan the Invisible Grand Duke, one to kill the official and the other to steal the seal. Ma Jinchuan had been taught by a man of strange powers, and he had twelve charms of invisibility. He stuck them on his head according to the twelve double-hours, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu and Hai, and then no one could possibly see him. That night the thief had come, heard the servants say that His Honour was drinking with Ji Gong in the study, and made for the study. Then he heard Ji Gong say he would do Jade Maidens Descending to Earth, and wanting to watch the trick and learn it, he stepped into the study. Nobody else could see that anyone had come in, but the monk could. Just as the thief was about to crawl under the table, the monk reached out and peeled his charm off. Only then could everyone see him, and they tied him up. When His Honour had got the whole story out of him, he had the thief put in fetters and thrown into jail. The monk ate and drank his fill, then got to his feet. “Zhou Rui, Luo Biao,” he said, “you come with me.”
眾班頭跟著出了衙門，一直奔馬家湖。和尚叫周瑞附耳說，如此如此，周瑞點頭。來到馬家湖村口，正聽見說，現在楊明在此。白蓮秀士惲飛，用囊沙迷魂袋把楊明打倒。後面有人說：「合字。這個交給我。」惲飛說：「何必你，我殺罷。」趕上前噗哧一聲，紅光崩見，鮮血直流，人頭落地。和尚說：「好快。殺了麼？」可是楊明並沒有殺死，乃是白蓮秀士惲飛被小玄壇周瑞殺了。惲飛聽後面說：「合字。這個交給我。」惲飛回頭瞧了一瞧，見周瑞鬢邊有白鵝翎，故此賊人沒留神。

The head constables followed him out of the yamen and made straight for Ma Family Lake. The monk called Zhou Rui over and whispered in his ear, so and so, and Zhou Rui nodded. When they reached the mouth of the village at Ma Family Lake, they heard a voice saying just then, “Yang Ming is here!” Yun Fei, the White Lotus Scholar, had knocked Yang Ming down with his Sand-Pouch Soul-Befuddling Bag. Someone behind him said, “Joiner! Leave this one to me.” “No need for you,” said Yun Fei. “I’ll kill him.” There was a rush forward and a swish: a red light burst out, blood gushed, and a head fell to the ground. “That was quick,” said the monk. “Killed, is he?” But Yang Ming had not been killed: it was Yun Fei, the White Lotus Scholar, who had been killed by Zhou Rui, Little Marshal Xuantan. When Yun Fei heard someone behind him say, “Joiner! Leave this one to me,” he had turned his head and taken a look, and seen a white goose feather at Zhou Rui’s temple, and so the thief had not been on his guard.
今天來的這一群賊，都是白鵝翎為記。焉想到濟公也叫周瑞等插上白鵝翎，這叫魚目混珠。有這麼兩句話：渾濁不分鰱共鯉，水清才見兩股魚。小玄壇周瑞把惲飛殺了。和尚過來一瞧，楊明躺著，人事不知。和尚叫周瑞找了一碗水來，捏了一塊藥，給楊明灌下去。當時楊明醒過來。抓起來一瞧，說：「原來師父來了。可了不得了，群賊來到馬家湖，明火執仗，這個亂大了。」和尚說：「你到馬俊家去瞧瞧，亂子還大。」楊明趕緊復返回來，躥房越脊，來到裡面一瞧，只見群賊升殿，雷鳴、陳亮、鄭雄、馬俊，俱被賊人捆上。
今天来的这一群贼，都是白鹅翎为记。焉想到济公也叫周瑞等插上白鹅翎，这叫鱼目混珠。有这么两句话：浑浊不分鲢共鲤，水清才见两股鱼。小玄坛周瑞把恽飞杀了。和尚过来一瞧，杨明躺着，人事不知。和尚叫周瑞找了一碗水来，捏了一块药，给杨明灌下去。当时杨明醒过来。抓起来一瞧，说：「原来师父来了。可了不得了，群贼来到马家湖，明火执仗，这个乱大了。」和尚说：「你到马俊家去瞧瞧，乱子还大。」杨明赶紧复返回来，蹿房越脊，来到里面一瞧，只见群贼升殿，雷鸣、陈亮、郑雄、马俊，俱被贼人捆上。
The gang of thieves who had come that night all wore white goose feathers as their sign. Who would have thought that Ji Gong would have Zhou Rui and his men wear white goose feathers too? This is what they call passing off fish eyes as pearls. There is a saying for it: “While the water’s muddy you can’t tell silver carp from carp; only when it clears do you see two kinds of fish.” Zhou Rui, Little Marshal Xuantan, had killed Yun Fei. The monk came over and looked: Yang Ming was lying there, dead to the world. The monk had Zhou Rui find a bowl of water, pinched off a piece of medicine and poured it down Yang Ming’s throat. Yang Ming came round at once. He scrambled up, looked about and said, “So it’s you, Master! This is terrible. A gang of thieves has come to Ma Family Lake with torches lit and weapons drawn. It’s a real uproar.” “Go and have a look at Ma Jun’s house,” said the monk. “The uproar there is bigger still.” Yang Ming hurried back, leaping onto the roofs and running along the ridges, and when he got inside and looked, there were the thieves holding court, and Lei Ming, Chen Liang, Zheng Xiong and Ma Jun had all been tied up by them.
