The White Lotus Sect

There was a certain man of the White Lotus sect, a native of Shanxi, probably one of Xu Hongru’s followers. He led people astray with sorcery, and a great many fell under his spell. One day, as he was about to go off somewhere, he set a basin in the hall and covered it with a second basin. He told a disciple to sit and guard it, and warned him not to open it and look. After he had gone, the disciple opened it. The basin held clear water, and on the water floated a boat woven of straw, with sail and mast complete. Curious, he poked it with his finger, and it tipped over at his touch. He hurriedly set it upright as before and put the cover back. In a moment the master returned. “Why did you disobey me?” he said angrily. The disciple at once protested that he had done no such thing. “A ship just capsized at sea,” said the master. “How can you lie to me?” Another evening the master lit a huge candle in the hall and told the disciple to watch it closely and not let the wind blow it out. By the second watch of the night the master had still not come, and the disciple, worn out and weary, lay down on the bed for a short nap. When he woke the candle had gone out, and he jumped up and lit it again. Soon the master came in and rebuked him again. “I never slept at all,” said the disciple. “How could the candle have gone out?” “You just made me walk more than ten li in the dark,” said the master angrily, “and you still talk like this?” The disciple was terrified. The man’s strange doings were of every kind, too many to write down.
