The Prince of Lu at Huaiqing was a man of benighted virtue. He often went about among the common people, and whenever he spied a good-looking woman he would seize her. A scholar named Wang had a wife whom the prince happened to see. He sent a carriage and horses straight into their house. The woman wailed and wept and would not submit, and his men carried her out by force. Wang fled and hid himself at the tomb of Nie Zheng, hoping his wife would pass that way so that he could bid her one farewell from afar. Before long his wife came by. She saw her husband in the distance, burst into sobs and threw herself to the ground. Wang was so stricken that he cried out before he knew it. The prince’s men realized he was Wang. They seized him and were about to beat him. Suddenly a man came out of the tomb, a bare blade in his hand, fierce and terrible to behold. “I am Nie Zheng!” he cried harshly. “How dare anyone seize a woman of good family by force! But since your kind are not your own masters, I will spare you this once. Take a message to your lawless prince: if he does not mend his ways, before many days I will pluck off his head!” The men were terrified. They left the carriage and ran, and the man went back into the tomb and vanished. Husband and wife kowtowed at the tomb and went home, still afraid that the prince’s order would come again. Ten days and more went by with no word at all, and only then did they feel safe. From that time on, it is said, the prince’s tyranny abated somewhat.
