The Foxes of the Zunhua Yamen

Lord Qiu of Zhucheng served as circuit intendant at Zunhua. His yamen had long been full of foxes. In the rearmost tower the slow-padding creatures lived together as a clan and made it their home. From time to time they came out and brought misfortune on people, and every attempt to drive them out only made them worse. The officials posted there could do nothing but set out sacrificial animals and pray to them; none dared cross them. When Lord Qiu took up his post and heard of this, he was angry. The foxes, for their part, feared his hard and fierce temper. One of them took the form of an old woman and said to someone of his household, “Please tell His Excellency: let there be no feud between us. Give me three days, and I will take my little ones and go elsewhere.” Qiu heard it and said nothing. The next day, when he had finished reviewing the troops, he ordered them not to disperse. He had them haul in all the great cannon from every camp at once, set a thousand of them in a ring round the tower and fire them all together. In an instant the tower, many fathoms high, was smashed flat to the ground. Hide and flesh, fur and blood rained down from the sky. Then, in the thick dust and poisonous smoke, a single wisp of white vapour was seen to break out through the smoke and rush away into the sky. Everyone watched it go. “One fox has got away,” they said. And from then on there was peace in the yamen.

Two years later Qiu sent a capable servant to the capital with a certain sum of silver, meaning to angle for a promotion. Before the business was settled, the silver was buried for the time being at the house of a yamen runner. Suddenly an old man came to the palace gates crying injustice. He said his wife and children had been wantonly slaughtered. He also accused Qiu of skimming the soldiers’ grain and of buying favour with men in power: the silver, he said, was lying at such-and-such a house at that very moment, and could be checked. By imperial order he was taken under escort to prove it. At the runner’s house they searched high and low and found nothing. The old man only tapped the ground with one foot. They understood, dug there, and sure enough found the silver. Cut into it were the words “Remitted by such-and-such prefecture.” Afterwards they looked for the old man, but he was nowhere to be found. They went by the village and name he had given to look for him, but there was no such person. This brought disaster on Qiu, and only then did people know that the old man was the fox that had escaped.

The Historian of the Strange says: Foxes that plague people fully deserve to die. But when they submit, letting them go is also how we keep our own humanity whole. Lord Qiu may be called one who “hated them too much.” And yet, had the man from West of the Pass done this, how could even a hundred foxes have taken revenge on him!
