Old Mr. Sun was the uncle of Qingfu, a relative of mine by marriage. He had always been a man of nerve. One day, as he lay napping in the daytime, he felt something climb onto the bed, and at once his body seemed to sway, as if he were riding on clouds and mist. He thought to himself: could this be a fox pressing down on me? He peeped out under his eyelids. The thing was the size of a cat, with yellow fur and a green snout, and it was coming up from the foot of the bed. It crept along, belly low, as if afraid of waking him. Little by little it climbed onto his body: where it touched his feet, his feet went limp; where it touched his thighs, his thighs went weak. The moment it reached his belly, he sprang up, pinned it down and seized it by the neck. The creature squealed shrilly but could not get free. He shouted for his lady to come quickly, and had her tie a sash round its waist. Then, holding the two ends of the sash, he laughed. “I hear you are good at changing shape. Well, my eyes are on you now. Let’s see how you change.” As he spoke, the creature suddenly drew in its belly until it was as thin as a pipe, and it nearly slipped out. Sun was startled and pulled the sash tight with all his strength. Then it swelled its belly out, thicker than a bowl and so hard the sash would not close on it; the moment he eased off a little, it shrank again. Afraid it would get away, he told his lady to kill it, quickly. She looked wildly about her and could not find the knife. Sun glanced to his left to show her where it was. When he turned back, the sash lay in his hands like a ring, and the creature was gone.
