Lei Ying had no choice but to pick it up off the floor and look, and there indeed was the seal, clear and bright, without the smallest flaw. He was so startled he had no answer to give. “Now someone accuses you of playing tricks with the seal you delivered,” said the prince in a rage. “Out with the truth, and be quick about it!” “Your servant truly did take the seal to the Nishui Spring,” said Lei Ying. “How would I dare play tricks? May I ask Your Highness who said so?” “Deng Che said so just now,” said the prince.
雷英聽了，暗暗發恨。心內一動，妙計即生，不由的冷笑道：「小臣只道那個說的，原來是鄧車。小臣啟上千歲，小臣正為此事心中犯疑。我想按院乃包相的門生，智略過人，而且他那衙門裡能人不少，如何能夠輕易的印信叫人盜去？必是將真印藏過，故意的設一方假印，被鄧車盜來。他以為幹了一件少一無二的奇功，誰知今日真印現出，不但使小臣徒勞無益，額外還擔個不白之冤，兀的不委屈死人了。」一席話說的個奸王點頭不語。鄧車羞愧難當，真是羞惱便成怒，一聲怪叫道：「哎喲！好顏查散！你竟敢欺負俺麼！俺合你誓不兩立。」雷英道：「鄧大哥不要著急，小弟是據理而論。你既能以廢鐵倒換印信，難道不准人家提出真的換上假的麼？事已如此，須要大家一同商議方好。」鄧車道：「商議什麼！俺如今惟有殺了按院，以泄欺侮之恨，別不及言。有膽量的隨俺走走呀！」只見沈仲元道：「小弟情願奉陪。」奸王聞聽，滿心歡喜。就在集賢堂擺上酒肴，大家暢飲。

When Lei Ying heard this, he seethed inwardly. Then a thought stirred in his heart, and at once a fine scheme was born. He could not help a cold laugh. “Your servant was wondering who could have said it — so it was Deng Che. May it please Your Highness, this very matter has been troubling your servant. As I see it, the Inspector is Minister Bao’s protégé and a man of uncommon wit and cunning, and his yamen is full of able men besides. How could he let his seal be stolen so easily? He must have hidden the real seal away and set out a false one on purpose, and that was what Deng Che stole. Deng Che thought he had pulled off a feat with none to match it — and who would have guessed that today the real seal would show itself? Not only has your servant toiled for nothing; on top of that he must bear a wrong he can never clear himself of. Isn’t that enough to make a man die of the injustice?” These words left the treacherous prince nodding and saying nothing. Deng Che was beside himself with shame — truly, shame turns to rage — and he let out a strange howl: “Aiyo! A fine trick, Yan Chasan! So you dare make a fool of me! It’s you or me from now on!” “Don’t fly into a passion, Brother Deng,” said Lei Ying. “I’m only reasoning it out. If you could swap the seal for scrap iron, why shouldn’t someone else take out the real one and put a false one in its place? Things being as they are, we had better all talk it over together.” “Talk what over?” said Deng Che. “All that’s left for me is to kill the Inspector and pay him back for this insult, and there’s nothing more to say. Whoever has the guts, come along with me!” Then Shen Zhongyuan spoke up: “I’ll gladly keep you company.” The treacherous prince was overjoyed to hear it, and had wine and dishes set out right there in the Jixian Hall, and they all drank their fill.

Oh! I see. He’s one of those who fear for their heads and fear for their tails. You’d never think it from the way he always boasts, but when it comes to the point his nerve won’t answer. Well, let him see what Deng Che can do. When the job’s done, I’ll give him a good roasting.”
