They were none other than the sisters Fengxian and Qiukui, women dressed as men, who had made their way to this place.

Ever since Squire Sha Long had captured Lan Xiao, the Gold-Faced God, and the man had been sent off under guard, all had been quiet. Every day Sha Long went hunting in the fields with Meng Jie, Jiao Chi, Shi Yun and the rest, and lived a life of ease. Then one day the magistrate of their county suddenly came to call. He had come, he declared, in search of worthy men: the Prince of Xiangyang particularly wished Sha Long to take the lead and drill the local militia. Squire Sha thought this a good thing too, and could only agree. When he got to the county town, the magistrate treated him as an honoured guest and showered him with favours: every three days a small banquet, and every ten days without fail a great one. Never mind Squire Sha, who thought himself in high favour; even Meng Jie and Jiao Chi looked on with their mouths watering. Truly, ‘a gentleman can be deceived by what seems right.’

Little did they know that the magistrate was a thoroughly crafty, mean little man. The Prince of Xiangyang knew how formidable Sha Long was, and was willing to lay out ten thousand taels of gold to have him taken and so avenge Lan Xiao. And as luck would have it, he came upon this greedy, corrupt official, who told him: “Taking Sha Long is no hard matter. So long as the gold and silver are to hand, I guarantee it will be done.” The treacherous prince did indeed hand over the full sum. And the magistrate laid a plan to lure Sha Long into his snare.
