且說智爺丁爺見他等將魚簍抬進去了，得便又望裡面望了一望，見樓臺殿閣，畫棟雕樑，壯麗非常，暗道：「這鍾雄也就僭越的很呢。」二人在臺基之上等候。又見方才抬魚那人出來，叫：「王哥哥，王哥哥，你真會吃個巧兒。我告訴你，這是兩包銀子，每包二兩，大王賞你們倆的。」智爺接過道：「回去替俺倆謝賞。」又將包兒顛了一顛。那人道：「你顛他做什麼？」智爺道：「俺顛著，你可別打俺們的脖子拐呀。」那人笑道：「豈有此理！你也太知道的多了。你看你們伙計，怎麼不言語呢？」智爺道：「你還不知道他呢，他叫俏皮李四。他要鬧起俏皮來，只怕你更架不住。」

Now, when Zhi Hua and Second Master Ding saw the men carry the fish inside, they seized the chance to take another look within. They saw towers and terraces, halls and pavilions, painted beams and carved rafters, splendid beyond words. “This Zhong Xiong has gone far above his station,” Zhi Hua thought to himself. The two of them waited on the terrace. Then the man who had carried in the fish came out again and called, “Brother Wang, Brother Wang, you’ve landed a lucky one, you have. Here, listen: two packets of silver, two taels each, a reward from the Great King for the pair of you.” Zhi Hua took them. “Go back an’ thank ’im for the both of us,” he said, and he bounced the packets in his palm to feel their weight. “What are you weighing them for?” said the man. “I’m a-weighin’ ’em so you can’t go nickin’ a bit off the top on us,” said Zhi Hua. The man laughed. “The very idea! You know a sight too much for your own good. But look at your partner there — why doesn’t he say anything?” “You don’t know him yet,” said Zhi Hua. “They call him Smart Li the Fourth. Once he starts bein’ smart, I reckon you’ll be the one can’t keep up.”
剛說到此，只見陸魯二人從內出來，兩旁人俱備垂手侍立。仍是那頭目跟隨，下了臺階。智丁二人也就一同來到船邊，乘舟搖槳，依然由舊路回來。到了接官廳，將船攏住。那頭目還讓廳上待茶，陸魯二人不肯。那人縱身登岸，復又執手。此時早有人將智丁與水手的腰牌要去。水手搖槳，離寨門不遠，只見方才迎接的那只小船，有個頭目將旗一展，又是一聲鑼鼓齊鳴，開了竹柵。小船上的頭目送出陸魯的船來，即撥轉船頭，進了竹柵，依然鑼鼓齊鳴，寨門已閉。真是法令森嚴，甚是齊整。智化等深加稱贊。

Just as he said this, Lu Bin and Lu Ying came out from within, and the men on either side all stood at attention with their hands at their sides. The same headman went with them down the steps. Zhi Hua and Second Master Ding came along with them to the boat, and they rowed back the way they had come. At the reception pavilion they brought the boat in. The headman invited them up to the pavilion for tea, but Lu Bin and Lu Ying would not stay. He leapt ashore and again clasped hands with them in farewell. By now someone had already taken back the waist passes from Zhi Hua, Second Master Ding and the boatmen. The boatmen rowed on, and not far from the gate of the stronghold they saw the little boat that had met them before. A headman on it unfurled a flag, and again there was a crash of gongs and drums together and the bamboo palisade opened. The headman on the little boat saw Lu Bin and Lu Ying’s boat out, then turned his bow about and went back in through the palisade. Once more the gongs and drums crashed together, and the gate of the stronghold was shut. Truly, the rules were strict and everything was in perfect order. Zhi Hua and the others praised it highly.
及至過了五孔橋，忽聽丁二爺「噗嗤」的一笑，然後又大笑起來。陸魯二人連忙問道：「丁二哥，笑什麼？」兆蕙道：「實實憋的我受不了了。這智大哥妝什麼象什麼，真真嘔人。」便將方才的那些言語述了一遍，招的陸魯二人也笑了。丁二爺道：「我彼時如何敢答言呢，就只自己忍了又忍。後來智大哥還告訴那人說我俏皮，那知我俏皮的都不俏皮了。」說罷，復又大笑。智化道：「賢弟不知，凡事到了身臨其境，就得搜索枯腸，費些心思，稍一疏神，馬腳畢露。假如平日原是你為你，我為我。若到今日，你我之外又有王二李四。他二人原不是你我。既不是你我，必須將你之為你我之為我俱各撇開，應是他之為他。既是他之為他，他之中決不可有你，也不可有我。能夠如此設身處地的做去，斷無不象之理。」丁二爺等聽了，點頭稱是，佩服之至。
