Now, the Ding brothers came back to the manor with Zhan Zhao. They gave the fisherman whose four fingers had been sliced off ten taels of silver and told him to rest and let his wound heal. Then Zhan Zhao raised the matter: “Deng Biao says Bai Yutang isn’t on the island — he’s gone to the Eastern Capital to look for me. So I must ask you, my two good brothers, to have a fast boat made ready for me now. I have to hurry home and then press on to the Eastern Capital.” When the Ding brothers heard this, they knew they could keep him no longer, and they had to agree. The next day they laid on a farewell feast and saw him off with every kindness, finding it harder than ever to let him go. Zhan Zhao went into the inner rooms as well and kowtowed in farewell to Madam Ding. The Ding brothers went with him to where the boat lay moored and watched him go aboard, and still they wanted to see him a long way on his road. Zhan Zhao held them back again and again, until in the end they gave it up; they saw him only as far as the main road, and there they said goodbye.

Zhan Zhao was truly longing for home, his heart flying ahead of him like an arrow. By the second watch one night he had already reached Wujin County, and he reckoned he could be home before the night was out. He had just come into a stretch of elm wood when he heard someone crying out, “Help! Save me! Oh, it’s terrible — there’s a robber with a club!” Zhan Zhao went toward the voice and found an old man with a bundle on his back, so out of breath he could hardly cry out at all. Then he heard someone coming after him, and this one was shouting loud and clear: “Oh, it’s terrible! Someone’s run off with my bundle!” Zhan Zhao saw at once how things stood. “Hide yourself, old man,” he said, “and I’ll stop him.” The old man had barely slipped behind a tree when Zhan Zhao crouched down. The pursuer came on, with eyes only for the road ahead. Zhan Zhao shot out his leg, and the man, coming on at full tilt, went down — splat! — flat on his face for a good mouthful of muck. Zhan Zhao was on him at once and pinned him down. He undid the cloth belt from the man’s waist and trussed him up like a crow skimming the water, arms bound behind his back. Seeing that the man had a wooden club as well, he thrust it through the bonds at his waist and propped him up on it, slantwise.

But I’m old and my strength is failing, and my eyes aren’t what they were, so I was late on the road back. I’d only just come into the elm wood when I ran into this fellow. He barked at me to stop and wanted some ‘road money’ or other. When I heard that, my soul all but jumped out of my body. I ran for it all the way, till I could hardly get my breath. It’s lucky you saved me, sir. Otherwise this old life of mine would have ended at his hands for certain.” “Yulin Village is on my way,” said Zhan Zhao. “Suppose I see you home?” Yan Fu knelt and thanked him once more.
