It was because he had waited at the Wenguang Tower until past the third watch before he at last saw Han Zhang and Jiang Ping come back. The two of them were all the more astonished to find Lu Fang there. “Eldest Brother,” they asked at once, “how can you be here?” Lu Fang told them how Minister Bao had treated him with kindness and set him free with no charge against him. When Jiang Ping heard it, he said to Han Zhang and Bai Yutang, “I said there was no need to go, but Third Brother wouldn’t have it. And now look what a mess it’s turned into.” “Where has your Third Brother gone?” asked Lu Fang. Han Zhang told him how they had reached Kaifeng and how the two sides had fought it out.
盧方聽了，只急的搓手。半晌，歎了口氣道：「千不是，萬不是，全是五弟不是。」蔣平道：「此事如何抱怨五弟呢？」盧方道：「他若不找甚麼姓展的，咱們如何來到這裡？」韓彰聽了卻不言語。蔣平道：「事已如此，也不必抱怨了。難道五弟有了英名，你我作哥哥的不光彩麼？只是如今，依大哥怎麼樣呢？」盧方道：「再無別說。只好劣兄將五弟帶至開封府，一來懇求相爺在聖駕前保奏，二來當面與南俠陪個禮兒，庶乎事有可圓。」白玉堂聽了，登時氣得雙眉緊皺，二目圓睜。若非在文光樓上，早已怪叫吆喝起來。便怒道：「大哥，此話從何說起？小弟既來尋找南俠，便與他誓不兩立。雖不能他死我活，總得要叫他甘心拜服與我，小弟方能出這口惡氣。若非如此，小弟至死也是不從的。」蔣平聽了，在旁贊道：「好兄弟！好志氣！真與我們陷空島爭氣！」韓彰在旁瞅了蔣平一眼，仍是不語。

After a long while he sighed and said, “A thousand wrongs, ten thousand wrongs, and every one of them is Fifth Brother’s.” “How can you blame Fifth Brother for this?” said Jiang Ping. “If he hadn’t gone after this fellow Zhan, or whatever his name is,” said Lu Fang, “how would we have ended up here?” Han Zhang heard this and said nothing. “What’s done is done,” said Jiang Ping. “There’s no use complaining. If Fifth Brother wins himself a hero’s name, doesn’t that do us credit too, as his elder brothers? But now, Eldest Brother, what do you think we should do?” “There’s nothing else for it,” said Lu Fang. “I’ll have to take Fifth Brother to Kaifeng myself: first, to beg His Excellency to speak for him before the Emperor, and second, so that he can apologize to the Southern Hero to his face. Then perhaps the whole business can be patched up.” At this Bai Yutang knit his brows tight in fury, and his eyes went round and wide. If they had not been up in the Wenguang Tower, he would have been yelling and bawling long before. He said angrily, “Eldest Brother, what kind of talk is that? I came looking for the Southern Hero, and it’s him or me. Even if it doesn’t come to him dying so that I can live, I’ve got to make him bow down to me of his own free will. Only then can I get this off my chest. Short of that, I won’t give in if it kills me.” Jiang Ping, beside him, cheered him on: “Well said, brother! That’s the spirit! You really do Xiankong Island proud!” Han Zhang, beside them, shot Jiang Ping a look, and still said nothing.
