What was more, in every quarter there were men on night duty. If he made the slightest sound — would that be any game?

Working round the edges of the tin sheeting, he cut through the roof boards with a sharp blade and laid these out in order too, and soon the rafters lay bare. Next he took a linked saw from his hundred-treasure pouch, sawed through two rafters on the slant, and put the saw away. He caught the as-you-wish hook on the end of his rope over the opening and, gripping the silk cord, had let himself down only two or three handholds when he reached the ceiling. He lifted one panel, slid down, and landed on solid ground. Then he moved on the tips of his toes, sliding his feet, for fear that someone would see his footprints.

He was just about to set to work when lamplight showed over the top of the wall on the far side, and someone jumped down, saying, “Here it is. Got one.” “This is bad!” Zhi Hua said to himself. He darted to the low wall at the front of the room, pressed himself flat against it, and listened hard. Outside, the voice spoke again: “That’s three.” “What are they looking for?” Zhi Hua wondered. Then he heard, “All six found.” And the man climbed back onto the wall and went over it. It turned out that the men on night duty next door had been playing at dice. The game had turned into a quarrel, and someone had flung the dice over the wall. Afterwards they had made it up and everyone had smoothed things over, so they had lit a lantern and jumped over the wall to look for them. “That’s three” and “All six found” meant the dice.
