The Tang Emperor holds the great assembly with a sincere heart;Guanyin reveals her sacred form and guides Golden Cicada

Now, the ghost messenger left the Underworld with Liu Quan and his wife. Wrapped in a swirling deathly wind, they went straight to the great capital Chang’an. The messenger pushed Liu Quan’s soul into Jinting Hall, then took Cuilian’s soul into the inner courts of the imperial palace. There he saw Princess Yuying walking slowly over the green moss beneath the flowers. He rushed into her, knocked her to the ground and seized her living soul, then pushed Cuilian’s soul into Yuying’s body. The ghost messenger returned to the Underworld; let us leave him there.

Now, when the serving women, senior and junior, in the palace courtyard saw Yuying fall down dead, they hurried to the Hall of Golden Chimes and told the Empress of the Three Palaces, “Her Highness the Princess has fallen down dead!” The Empress was greatly alarmed and at once told Taizong. He nodded and sighed. “So this has indeed come to pass. We asked the Ten Kings of the Underworld, ‘Are the old and young safe?’ They said, ‘All are safe, but We fear your imperial younger sister’s life may be cut short.’ Their words have come true.” Everyone in the palace came in grief to look beneath the flowers, only to find that the Princess was still faintly breathing. “Do not weep! Do not weep!” said the Tang Emperor. “Do not startle her.” He went forward, raised her head with his own imperial hands and called, “Little sister, wake up, wake up!” The Princess suddenly rolled over and cried, “Husband, go slowly! Wait for me!” Taizong said, “Little sister, we are here.” The Princess raised her head, opened her eyes and looked at him. “Who are you, daring to lay hands on me?” Taizong said, “Your imperial elder brother and sister-in-law.” The Princess said, “Where would I get an imperial elder brother or sister-in-law? My maiden surname is Li, and my childhood name is Li Cuilian. My husband is surnamed Liu and named Quan. We both come from Junzhou. Three months ago I took out a golden hairpin at our doorway to give alms to a monk. My husband blamed me for leaving the inner rooms without permission and failing in a woman’s duty, and scolded me. Anger choked my breast, so I hung a white silk sash from a beam and hanged myself, leaving two children who wept day and night. Now my husband has been specially commissioned by the Tang Emperor to present melons and fruit in the Underworld. The King of the Underworld took pity on us and let us both return. My husband went ahead, and because I was late I could not catch him. I tripped and fell. You rude people! You do not even know my name — how dare you grab me?” Taizong said to the palace attendants, “We suppose Our younger sister has been knocked senseless by the fall and is talking nonsense.” He ordered the Imperial Medical Bureau to bring a medicinal draught and had Yuying helped into the palace.

The Tang Emperor was in the hall when an officer attending the throne suddenly reported, “Your Majesty, Liu Quan, the man who presented the melons and fruit, has returned to life and awaits your command outside the audience gate.” The Tang Emperor was astonished and immediately summoned Liu Quan, who prostrated himself upon the red court paving. Taizong asked, “How did the presentation of melons and fruit go?” Liu Quan said, “Your servant carried the melons and fruit on his head straight to the Ghost Gate, and was led to the Hall of Universal Judgement. There I saw the Ten Kings of the Underworld, offered the melons and fruit, and explained fully the earnest thanks my sovereign wished to convey. The Kings were delighted and sent many greetings to my sovereign, saying, ‘What a faithful and virtuous ruler Emperor Taizong is!’” The Tang Emperor said, “What did you see in the Underworld?” Liu Quan said, “Your servant did not go far and saw little. I only heard the King ask my name and where I came from. Your servant told him how my wife had hanged herself, and how I had abandoned my home and children and willingly come to present the melons. He immediately sent a ghost messenger to bring my wife, and we met before the Hall of Universal Judgement. Meanwhile he checked the Register of Life and Death, said that my wife and I were both allotted lives long enough to attain immortality, and sent a ghost messenger to take us back. Your servant went ahead and my wife followed. Fortunately I have returned to life, but I do not know where my wife has gone.” The Tang Emperor asked in surprise, “Did the King say anything about your wife?” Liu Quan said, “The King said nothing at first. I only heard the ghost messenger say, ‘Li Cuilian has been in the world of the dead for some time. Her body no longer exists.’ The King said, ‘Li Yuying, the Tang Emperor’s younger sister, is due to die suddenly now. Let Cuilian borrow Yuying’s body and return to life.’ Your servant does not know where this ‘Tang Emperor’s younger sister’ is, or where she lives. I have not yet been able to look for her.”

At this report the Tang Emperor’s heart filled with delight. He said to his officials, “When We took leave of the King of the Underworld, We asked about the palace. He said, ‘The old and young are all safe, but We fear your imperial younger sister’s life may be cut short.’ Just now Our younger sister Yuying fell down dead beneath the flowers. We hurried to lift her and look at her, and she soon revived, crying, ‘Husband, go slowly! Wait for me!’ We thought she had been knocked senseless and was talking nonsense. But when We questioned her closely, her account was just the same as Liu Quan’s.” Wei Zheng reported, “Your imperial younger sister’s life suddenly ended, and as soon as she revived she said these words. This means Liu Quan’s wife has borrowed her body to return to life. Such things do happen. You might have the Princess brought out and hear what she has to say.” The Tang Emperor said, “We have just ordered the Imperial Medical Bureau to give her medicine. We do not know how she is.” He sent his consorts into the palace to fetch her. Inside, the Princess was making a great uproar. “What medicine am I to take? How is this my house? My house is a cool, tiled place, nothing like this building with jaundice and these garish doors! Let me out! Let me out!”

In the midst of her shouting, four or five female officials and two or three eunuchs helped her straight into the hall. The Tang Emperor said, “Would you know your husband?” Yuying said, “What a thing to say! We were married when we were young, and I have borne him sons and daughters. How could I not know him?” The Tang Emperor ordered the palace attendants to help her down. The Princess left the hall and came to the white jade steps. Seeing Liu Quan, she caught hold of him. “Husband, where are you going? Why won’t you wait for me? I fell down, and those unreasonable people crowded round me shouting. What is all this about?” Liu Quan heard his wife’s words, but saw that this was not his wife’s face, and dared not acknowledge her. The Tang Emperor said, “Truly, men have seen mountains collapse and the earth split, but seldom a living soul seized to make room for the dead.” What a just and enlightened sovereign! He bestowed all his younger sister’s trousseau, clothing and jewellery upon Liu Quan, just as though he were giving her a dowry. He also granted him a decree exempting him forever from compulsory service and ordered him to take the imperial younger sister home. Husband and wife thanked him before the steps and happily returned to their native place. There is a poem to prove it:

A person’s life and death are ties from lives before;long or short, each has an allotted span.Liu Quan presents melons and returns to the living world;Li Cuilian borrows a body and comes back to life.

The two took leave of the sovereign and went straight to Junzhou. They found their old household and their children safe and well, and husband and wife spread the word of the rewards of goodness; let us leave them there.

Our story turns to Yuchi Gong, who took a treasury of gold and silver to Kaifeng Prefecture in Henan to make inquiries. Xiang Liang, it turned out, made his living selling water. With his wife, Madam Zhang, he also sold earthenware basins and pots at their doorway. Of the little money they earned, they kept only enough for their expenses. The rest went on feeding monks, giving alms and buying paper ingots of gold and silver, which they burned to credit their treasury. That was how this reward for goodness had come to them. In the living world he was a poor man who delighted in doing good; in the other world he was a wealthy elder with heaps of jade and gold. When Yuchi Gong brought the gold and silver to their door, old Master Xiang and his wife were frightened out of their wits. Officials of the prefecture had come as well, and carriages and horses crowded outside their thatched home. The old couple were like people struck dumb and senseless. They knelt on the ground, doing nothing but knocking their heads and bowing. Yuchi Gong said, “Please rise, old sir. Though I am an imperial commissioner, I have brought my sovereign’s gold and silver to repay you.” Trembling, he answered, “Your humble servant has no gold or silver to lend. How could I dare accept wealth whose source I do not know?” Yuchi Gong said, “I too have learned that you are a poor man. But you feed monks and give alms, and spend all you can on paper gold and silver ingots, burning them to credit your account in the Underworld. You have money accumulated there. Our Emperor Taizong died for three days, then his soul returned and he came to life. In the Underworld he borrowed a treasury of gold and silver from you. We have now brought the same amount to repay you. Accept every bit of it, so I can go back and report.” Xiang Liang and his wife only bowed towards heaven. How could they dare accept it? “If your humble servants accept this gold and silver, we shall die all the sooner. Though we burn paper money to credit a treasury, that is a matter of the unseen world. Besides, what proof is there that His Majesty borrowed gold and silver in that world? We certainly dare not accept it.” Yuchi Gong said, “His Majesty says Judge Cui stood surety when he borrowed your money, and can bear witness. Accept it.” Xiang Liang said, “Even if it costs my life, I dare not accept it.”

Seeing how stubbornly he refused, Yuchi Gong had no choice but to draw up a memorial and send someone to report. When Taizong read it and learned that Xiang Liang would not accept the gold and silver, he said, “This is truly a kindly and good elder.” He immediately ordered Yuchi Jingde to use the gold and silver on Xiang Liang’s behalf to build a monastery, erect shrines to the living couple and invite monks to perform works of merit. That would count as repaying him. When the decree arrived, Jingde bowed towards the palace in thanks and announced it, making it known to all. With the gold and silver he bought a plot within the city that encroached on neither soldiers nor civilians, fifty mu in extent, and began building a monastery upon it. It was named the Imperially Founded Xiangguo Monastery. To its left stood shrines to old Master Xiang and his wife, with carved stone tablets bearing the words ‘Construction supervised by Yuchi Gong.’ This is the Great Xiangguo Monastery of today.

When the work was finished and reported, Taizong was delighted. He again assembled his officials and issued a proclamation summoning monks to hold a Water and Land Assembly and deliver the lonely souls in the Underworld. The proclamation went throughout the empire, directing local officials to recommend eminent monks who possessed the Way and send them to Chang’an for the assembly. In less than a month, monks from all over the empire had arrived. The Tang Emperor ordered Fu Yi, Assistant Director of Astronomy, to select eminent monks and arrange the Buddhist rites. On receiving the command, Fu Yi submitted a memorial opposing Buddhism and asserting that there was no Buddha. It read:

The next day the three court ministers assembled the monks at the Altar of Mountains and Rivers, examined them one by one from the beginning and chose an eminent monk of virtue. And who, you may ask, was he?

His sacred name in the spirit realm was Golden Cicada;he simply failed to attend to the Buddha’s teaching.Reborn in the dusty mortal world, he suffered bitter trials;born among ordinary men, he was caught in their snares.Misfortune met him as he left the womb;before he came forth he already faced a band of villains. His father was Chen, the first scholar of Haizhou;his grandfather a chief commander at the reigning court. At birth his fate lay under the River-Falling Star;with the current he drifted, pursuing waves and billows. On the sea isle of Jinshan a great bond awaited him;the monk Qian’an took him in and raised him.At eighteen he recognized his own mother, then went to the capital to appeal to his grandfather.Chief Commander Kaishan mustered a great army;in Hongzhou he crushed the outlaws and slew the wicked band. The first scholar Guangrui escaped Heaven’s net;father and son met, a cause for joy and praise.Again he came before the sovereign and received his favour;in Lingyan Pavilion his worthy name resounded.Declining the office offered him, he wished to be a monk;at Hongfu Monastery he sought the Way.His childhood name was Jiangliu, child of an ancient Buddha;his name in religion was Chen Xuanzang.

That day they presented Master Xuanzang before the assembled monks. This man had been a monk since childhood; from the moment he left his mother’s womb, he observed the vegetarian fast and the precepts. His maternal grandfather was now Yin Kaishan, a chief commander at the reigning court. His father, Chen Guangrui, had come first in the examinations and been appointed Grand Academician of the Hall of Literary Depth. His heart had no love for splendour, only a delight in cultivating stillness and extinction. Their inquiries showed that his family background was excellent and his virtue lofty. Of a thousand sutras and ten thousand sacred texts, there was not one he did not understand; of Buddhist chants and heavenly melodies, there was not one he did not know.

The three led him before the throne, bowed to the dust and performed the ceremonial dance of homage. After making their bows, they reported, “Your servants Xiao Yu and the others have obeyed the sacred command and selected one eminent monk, Chen Xuanzang.” Hearing the name, Taizong thought for a long time. “Is this Xuanzang, the son of Academician Chen Guangrui?” Jiangliu knocked his head upon the ground. “Your servant is he.” Taizong said happily, “Then the choice is indeed right. Truly, you are a monk of virtue with a heart devoted to meditation. We grant you the offices of Left and Right Superintendent of Monks and Chief Superintendent for the Great Exposition of the Faith throughout the empire.” Xuanzang bowed his head in thanks and accepted his office of Great Exposition. He was also given a five-coloured cassock woven with gold and a Vairocana cap. He was told to take care in paying further respects to learned monks, assign the senior ritual masters their ranks, put the imperial instructions in writing and proceed to Huasheng Monastery, where he was to choose an auspicious day and hour and begin expounding the scriptures.

Xuanzang bowed again, received his orders and withdrew. He went to Huasheng Monastery, assembled the monks, had meditation couches made, arranged the sacred adornments and put the music in order. He selected twelve hundred learned monks of every rank and divided them among the upper, middle and lower halls. Before each image of the Buddha all the necessary objects were ready, everything in its proper order. The third day of the ninth month that year was chosen as an auspicious day to begin the Water and Land Assembly, which would last seven times seven, forty-nine days. He submitted a memorial to report this. Taizong, his civil and military officials, imperial relatives and kinsmen all attended at the appointed time to offer incense and hear the exposition. There is a poem to prove it. A poem says:

The year is the thirteenth of Zhenguan;the sovereign summons the assembly to discuss the scriptures. At the sacred altar boundless teachings unfold;amid clouds and mist, light rides the shrine of great vows.An imperial edict bestows grace and restores the great monastery;Golden Cicada sheds his shell and is transformed towards the West. The fruits of goodness are bestowed on all to lift the sunken;the teaching is proclaimed through the three divisions, first and last.

In the thirteenth year of the Zhenguan reign, the jisi year, in the jiaxu ninth month, on the auspicious third day, guimao, Chen Xuanzang, Master of the Great Exposition, assembled twelve hundred eminent monks at Huasheng Monastery in Chang’an to expound the various wondrous scriptures. After the morning audience, the Emperor led his civil and military officials out of the Hall of Golden Chimes and rode straight to the monastery in phoenix carriage and dragon coach to offer incense. And what did the imperial procession look like? Truly:

Blessed vapours fill the sky;auspicious light shines in ten thousand rays. The breeze of benevolent rule wafts gently;the sun of good government shines with matchless beauty.A thousand officials with chiming pendants divide before and behind;the banners of the Five Guards line either side.Golden melon maces in hand, battle-axes held aloft, they march in couples and pairs;candles veiled in crimson gauze and incense from imperial burners rise in stately haze.Dragons fly and phoenixes dance;ospreys are recommended and eagles soar. The enlightened Son of Heaven is upright;his loyal and righteous ministers are good.A thousand years of mighty blessings surpass Shun and Yu the Great;ten thousand generations of peace outdo Yao and Tang.See too the curved-handled parasols and robes of coiling dragons, their radiance answering each other;linked rings of jade and fans of coloured phoenixes, their blessed haze drifting aloft.Pearl crowns and jade belts, purple ribbons and golden seals.A thousand troops protect the sovereign;two ranks of generals attend the carriage.Bathed and purified, this Emperor reveres the Buddha with devotion;taking refuge in the fruits of goodness, he gladly offers incense.

The Tang Emperor’s procession reached the monastery early, and he ordered the music and percussion to cease. Alighting from his carriage, he led the officials in worshipping the Buddha and offering incense. After three circuits he looked up. It was indeed a splendid place for the rites. This is what he saw:

Standards and banners flutter;precious canopies flash with light.Standards and banners flutter, waving streaks of coloured cloud in the still sky;precious canopies flash with light, darting red lightning in the sun.The golden image of the World-Honoured One is stately in its features;the jade-like faces of the arhats are fierce in their majesty.Heavenly flowers stand in vases;sandalwood and rosewood burn in censers.Heavenly flowers stand in vases, bright brocade trees filling the precious monastery;sandalwood and rosewood burn in censers, thick clouds of fragrance reaching the clear sky.Fresh seasonal fruits fill scarlet dishes;rare sweetmeats and pastries heap the coloured tables.Eminent monks stand in ranks chanting the true scriptures, vowing to lift the lonely souls out of suffering.

Taizong and his civil and military officials all offered incense, bowed before the Buddha’s golden image and paid their respects to the arhats. They saw Chen Xuanzang, Master of the Faith and Chief Superintendent of the Great Exposition, lead the monks in bowing together to the Tang Emperor. When the ceremony was over, they took their meditation seats in their assigned ranks. The master presented Taizong with the proclamation for the deliverance of lonely souls. It read:

Highest virtue is vast and unfathomable;the meditation teaching is stillness and extinction.Pure and spiritually responsive,it circulates through the Three Realms.Changing in a thousand ways and transforming in ten thousand,it embraces yin and yang. Its essence and workings are true and eternal, without limit or end. When we behold those lonely souls, they deserve our deepest pity.We therefore obey Emperor Taizong’s sacred command toselect and assemble monks, practise meditation and expound the Dharma. We throw wide the gate of skilful means and launch far and wide the boats of compassion, to deliver all beings from the sea of suffering and free them from the chronic affliction of the six destinies. We lead them back to the true path,to roam at ease in the primal vastness;in movement and stillness they act without striving, blended into pure simplicity.Through this good cause, may they enjoy the clear celestial capital and its crimson gates;through our splendid assembly, may they escape hell and the cage of mortality.May they soon ascend to Ultimate Bliss and wander freely, coming and going in the West as they please.

A poem says:

One censer of incense for enduring life;several scrolls to deliver souls to rebirth.Boundless wondrous teachings are proclaimed;limitless imperial grace bathes all.Wrongful debts and evil karma are wiped away;lonely souls all leave their prison.May our realm be protected, peaceful and pure, with blessings for all.

Taizong read it with a heart full of joy and said to the monks, “Keep your hearts sincere, and on no account neglect the Buddhist rites. When the work is complete and blessings have come to each, We shall reward you richly. Your labours will certainly not go unpaid.” The twelve hundred monks bowed their heads together in thanks. After the three vegetarian meals that day, the Tang Emperor returned to the palace. He would be invited back to offer incense at the principal service on the seventh day. By then evening was drawing on, and the officials all withdrew. And what a fine evening it was! Look:

Across ten thousand miles of sky the sunset glow grows pale;a few returning crows come down to roost.Lamps fill the city, its homes fallen quiet;now is the time for monks to enter meditation.

Let that suffice for the night’s scene. The next morning the master again took his high seat and assembled the monks to chant the scriptures; let us leave them there.

Meanwhile, the Bodhisattva Guanshiyin of Mount Potalaka in the South Sea, since receiving the Buddha’s command, had been searching Chang’an for a good man to fetch the scriptures. After many days she had still found no one of true virtue. Suddenly she heard that Taizong was promoting the fruits of goodness, selecting eminent monks and founding a great assembly. She also saw that the master presiding over the altar was the monk Jiangliu, a child of the Buddha descended from the Land of Ultimate Bliss, the very elder whom she had originally guided to his rebirth. The Bodhisattva was delighted. She took the treasures the Buddha had given her out onto the main street and offered them for sale with Mu Zha. And what treasures were they, you may ask? A brocade cassock set with rare jewels and a nine-ringed monk’s staff. The three bands — golden, tightening and restricting — she kept carefully hidden for later use. Only the cassock and staff were put up for sale.

In Chang’an there was a foolish monk who had failed to be selected, though he did have a few strings of shabby cash. He saw the Bodhisattva disguised as a scabby monk, in a ragged robe, barefoot and bareheaded, holding a cassock that shone with brilliant light. He went up and asked, “You scabby monk, how much do you want for your cassock?” The Bodhisattva said, “The cassock is worth five thousand taels, and the staff two thousand.” The foolish monk laughed. “These two scabby monks are mad! They’re idiots! Seven thousand taels of silver for these two paltry things? Even if putting them on kept you young forever and made you a Buddha or a patriarch on the spot, they wouldn’t be worth that much! Take them away! You’ll never sell them!”

The Bodhisattva did not argue, but went on with Mu Zha. After walking for some time they reached Donghua Gate, where they happened upon Chancellor Xiao Yu returning from court, his advance attendants shouting to clear the street. The Bodhisattva openly refused to move aside. Holding the cassock in the street, she went straight towards the chancellor. He reined in his horse to look. Seeing the cassock’s brilliant glow, he had an attendant ask the seller’s price. The Bodhisattva said, “Five thousand taels for the cassock, two thousand for the staff.” Xiao Yu said, “What is so good about them that they command such a price?” The Bodhisattva said, “The cassock has its good points and its bad points. Sometimes I ask money for it, sometimes none.” Xiao Yu said, “What are its good points, and what are its bad?” The Bodhisattva said, “Wear my cassock, and you will not sink into perdition, fall into hell, suffer malicious harm or meet disaster from tigers and wolves. Those are its good points. But foolish monks who crave lust and delight in misfortune, monks who neither fast nor keep the precepts, and ordinary men who revile the scriptures and slander the Buddha will hardly catch sight of my cassock. That is its bad point.” He asked again, “When do you ask money, and when none?” The Bodhisattva said, “If someone who does not follow the Buddhist teaching or honour the Three Jewels insists on buying the cassock and staff, I shall certainly charge him seven thousand taels. That is when I ask money. But if someone honours the Three Jewels, rejoices in goodness, takes refuge in our Buddha and is worthy to receive them, I shall gladly give him the cassock and staff to form a good bond with me. That is when I ask none.” At these words Xiao Yu’s face brightened still more, and he knew this was a good man. He dismounted at once, greeted the Bodhisattva courteously and said, “Elder of the Great Dharma, pardon my offence. The Emperor of our Great Tang is deeply devoted to goodness, and every civil and military official at court follows his example. We are now holding a Water and Land Assembly. This cassock would be just right for Master Chen Xuanzang, Chief Master of the Great Exposition, to wear. Come with me to court to see His Majesty.”

The Bodhisattva gladly agreed, turned her steps and went straight through Donghua Gate. A palace chamberlain reported their arrival, and they were summoned by imperial command to the hall. Seeing Xiao Yu lead two scabby monks to stand below the steps, the Tang Emperor asked, “What have you come to report, Xiao Yu?” Xiao Yu prostrated himself before the steps. “When your servant left Donghua Gate, I happened upon two monks selling a cassock and a staff. Your servant thought Master Xuanzang could wear this garment, and so brought the monks to seek an audience.” Taizong was delighted and asked the price of the cassock. The Bodhisattva and Mu Zha stood below the steps without paying their respects. Asked the price, she answered, “Five thousand taels for the cassock, two thousand for the staff.” Taizong said, “What is so good about that cassock that it is worth so much?” The Bodhisattva said:

“A dragon draped in one thread of this cassock escapes the calamity of being swallowed by Garuda;a crane hung with a single strandgains the wonder of passing beyond the ordinary into sagehood.Wherever its wearer sits, ten thousand gods come to bow;at every movement, the Seven Buddhas attend him. This cassock is made from silk drawn and spun by ice silkworms, twisted into thread by skilful craftsmen, woven by immortal maidens and worked on the loom by divine women. Square after square of gathered fabric is sewn with embroidered flowers;piece joins piece in richly piled brocade.Exquisite fragments vie in floral patterns;bright colours shed light and burst with jewelled splendour.Worn, it wraps the whole body in red mist;taken off, it flies like a length of coloured cloud.Beyond the gates of the Three Heavens it sends out primal light;before the Five Sacred Mountains it breathes a precious radiance.Western lotus flowers are set in layer upon layer;gleaming pearls hang in the patterns of stars. At its four corners are night-shining pearls;where the folds gather at the top is an emerald.Though the primal body is not revealed in full, eight treasures gather there and give off light. This cassock is folded away in idle hours, worn only when a sage is met.Folded away in idle hours, its rainbow glow pierces a thousand wrappings;worn only when a sage is met,it startles all the heavens and frightens gods and ghosts.Upon it are a wish-fulfilling pearl, a mani pearl, a dust-repelling pearl and a wind-calming pearl;red agate, purple coral, night-shining pearls and sacred relics too.It steals the moon’s cool whitenessand rivals the sun’s red glow.Stream upon stream of immortal breath fills the sky;bloom upon bloom of blessed light supports the sage.Stream upon stream of immortal breath fills the sky, shining through the passes of Heaven;bloom upon bloom of blessed light supports the sage, spreading its radiance over the world.Shining on hills and rivers,it startles tigers and leopards;lighting sea isles,it stirs fish and dragons. Two bands of gold chain run along the edge;linked white jade clasps fasten at the neck.

A poem says:

The Three Jewels stand majestic, their Way worthy of honour;all four modes of birth and six paths are considered.Clear the mind and learn to nurture the teaching for men and gods;see your nature and pass on the lamp of wisdom. It guards the body, adorning the golden world;body and mind are pure as ice in a jade flask.Since the Buddha made the cassock, through ten thousand aeons who would dare to cut down a monk?”

Hearing this in the hall, the Tang Emperor was delighted. He asked again, “Monk, what virtues has the nine-ringed staff?” The Bodhisattva said, “This staff of mine is such as this:

Made of iron set with bronze, with nine linked rings;nine joints of immortal vine keep the face forever young.Taken in hand, it makes you scorn the thin green bones;lightly carried down the mountain, it brings white clouds home. The great Fifth Patriarch roamed the gates of Heaven with it;Luobo sought his mother and broke through the gates below.Untouched by the slightest stain of mortal dust,it gladly attends a holy monk to Jade Mountain.”

Hearing this, the Tang Emperor ordered the cassock spread out and examined it carefully from end to end. It was indeed a fine thing. “Elder of the Great Dharma,” he said, “to tell you the truth, We are now spreading the good teaching and widely planting the field of blessings. Many monks are gathered at Huasheng Monastery to expound the scriptures. Among them is a man of great virtue, whose name in religion is Xuanzang. We wish to buy these two treasures of yours and bestow them on him for his use. What is the price you truly ask?” At this the Bodhisattva and Mu Zha joined their palms in devotion and invoked the Buddha’s name. Bowing, she addressed the throne. “Since he is virtuous, this poor monk gladly offers them to him and will certainly take no money.” With that she turned to leave. The Tang Emperor hurriedly told Xiao Yu to stop her, rose partway from his seat in the hall and asked, “You first said five thousand taels for the cassock and two thousand for the staff. Now that you see We wish to buy them, you ask no money. Are you suggesting that We rely on Our position as sovereign to force your goods from you? Nothing could be further from the truth. We shall pay your original price. You must not refuse.” The Bodhisattva raised her hands. “This poor monk made a vow beforehand. I said from the first that if someone truly honoured the Three Jewels, rejoiced in goodness and took refuge in our Buddha, I would ask no money and gladly give them to him. Now I see that Your Majesty makes virtue shine, rests in the highest goodness and honours our Buddhist faith. Moreover, the eminent monk possesses virtue and good conduct and proclaims the great Dharma. It is only right to offer them, and I shall certainly take no money. This poor monk wishes to leave these things and take his leave.” The Tang Emperor was very pleased at such earnestness and ordered the Court of Imperial Entertainments to lay out a great vegetarian banquet in thanks. The Bodhisattva firmly refused this too, went away freely and gladly, and returned to hide in the capital’s Earth God temple as before; let us leave her there.

Now, Taizong held a noon audience and sent Wei Zheng with a decree summoning Xuanzang to court. The master was on the altar with the assembled monks, chanting sutras and reciting verses. As soon as he heard there was an imperial command, he came down, straightened his robes and went with Wei Zheng to see the Emperor. Taizong said, “You have laboured, Master, to bring Our good undertaking to fulfilment, and We have had nothing to give you in thanks. This morning Xiao Yu met two monks who offered a brocade cassock set with rare jewels and a nine-ringed monk’s staff. We have summoned you especially to receive them for your use.” Xuanzang knocked his head upon the ground in thanks. Taizong said, “If you do not disdain it, Master, put it on for Us to see.” The elder shook out the cassock, draped it over his body and stood before the steps holding the staff. Sovereign and ministers alike were delighted. Truly he was a child of the Buddha. Look at him:

His majestic features are full of refined grace;the Buddhist robe fits as though cut to measure. Its brilliant radiance fills Heaven and Earth;its mingled colours gather through the universe.Shining pearls are ranged above and below;layers of golden thread run front and back.Fine silk on all four sides, with brocade along the edges;ten thousand rare designs spread in rich embroidery.Eight treasures form the flowers, their buttons bound in silk;golden rings clasp the neck and catch the velvet fastenings. The Buddhist heavens, great and small, stand high and low;the stars, exalted and humble, divide to left and right.Master Xuanzang has a mighty bond of destiny;he is worthy to receive this thing before him.Like a living arhat from Ultimate Bliss,he surpasses true awakened worthies of the West. The staff’s nine rings chime against each other;the Vairocana cap sets off his noble fullness.Truly a child of the Buddha, no idle tale;surpassing awakening itself, without deceit or falsehood.

Then the civil and military officials cheered before the steps. Taizong was delighted beyond measure. He told the master to keep on the cassock and carry the precious staff, gave him two companies of ceremonial attendants and had the officials escort him out of the audience gate. He was to parade down the main street to the monastery, just like the first scholar in the examinations displaying his new honours. Xuanzang bowed again in thanks and went grandly and noisily along the street, swaying as he walked. Look at Chang’an: travelling traders and shopkeepers, young gentlemen and nobles’ sons, writers and scholars, men and women, young and old, all crowded to see him and praise him. “What a master!” they said. “Truly a living arhat descended from above, a living Bodhisattva come into the mortal world!”

Xuanzang went straight to the monastery, where the monks left their couches to greet him. When they saw him wearing this cassock and carrying this staff, they all said the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha had come. Each bowed in devotion and attended him to left and right. Xuanzang entered the hall, lit incense and worshipped the Buddha. After telling the monks with gratitude of the sovereign’s favour, they each returned to their meditation seats. Before they knew it, the red wheel of the sun had sunk in the west. Truly:

The sun sets, smoke blurs grass and trees;in the imperial city bells and drums first sound.Three ringing peals halt the passing crowds;the streets before and behind fall still. The great monastery shines with lamplight;the lonely village is cold and silent.Monks enter meditation and attend to the remaining scriptures:the very hour to subdue demons and nurture their nature.

Time passed in the flick of a finger, and the seventh day, the day of the principal service, arrived. Xuanzang again submitted a memorial inviting the Tang Emperor to offer incense. By now the fame of the good undertaking had filled the land. Taizong arranged his procession and led his civil and military officials, empress, consorts and imperial kinsmen to the monastery early. Everyone in the city, great and small, high and low, went there to hear the exposition.

At this time the Bodhisattva said to Mu Zha, “Today is the principal service of the Water and Land Assembly. This first seven-day cycle will do for the seven times seven. You and I will mingle with the crowd: first, to see what this assembly is like; second, to see whether Golden Cicada has the good fortune to wear my treasures; and third, to hear which scriptures and teachings he expounds.” The two went to the monastery. Truly,

a destined bond brings old acquaintances together;wisdom returns to its original sacred place.

They entered and looked about. Truly:

The great empire of the celestial courtindeed surpasses the Saha world. It outdoes Jetavana at Shravastiand is no less than the great monasteries of the faith.Heavenly music rings out,and the Buddha’s name resounds.

The Bodhisattva went straight to the side of the Many-Treasure Platform. Sure enough, there was the likeness of wise Golden Cicada. A poem says:

All appearances are clear and bright, without a speck of dust;Xuanzang, Master of the Great Exposition, sits upon the high platform.Lonely souls come unseen to be delivered to rebirth;lofty hearers come from the marketplace to listen to the Dharma.Gifts are bestowed as need requires, the heart’s path reaching far;food offerings are made at will, the treasury gate thrown open. They look on as boundless teachings are expounded;young and old alike open their hearts in joy.

Another poem says:

Wandering in the lecture hall of the Dharma realm, they meet an old acquaintance beyond the common world. They tell of the countless matters before them, and speak of many achievements through dust-numbered aeons. The Dharma cloud drifts and spreads across the mountains;the net of the teaching stretches through all the sky.Reviewing human life, they turn towards good thoughts;flowers rain down from Heaven in showers of red.

Upon the platform the master recited for a while from the Sutra of Birth and Deliverance of the Dead, expounded for a while the Heavenly Treasure Talisman for Pacifying the Realm, and then proclaimed for a while the Scroll Exhorting the Cultivation of Merit. The Bodhisattva went up, struck the precious platform with her hand and called out sternly, “Monk, you can only expound the teachings of the Lesser Vehicle. Can you expound the Great Vehicle?” Xuanzang was delighted. He turned and leapt down from the platform, raised his hands respectfully to the Bodhisattva and said, “Venerable Master, your disciple is greatly at fault for failing to recognize you. All the monks here expound the teachings of the Lesser Vehicle. We do not know what the teachings of the Great Vehicle are.” The Bodhisattva said, “These teachings of your Lesser Vehicle cannot deliver the dead to a higher realm. They can only blend with the common world and temper its light. I have the Three Baskets of the Great Vehicle’s Buddhist teaching. They can lift the dead to Heaven, free those in distress from suffering, cultivate a body of boundless life, and bring about neither coming nor going.”

While they were speaking, the official in charge of incense and patrolling the halls hurried to report to the Tang Emperor. “The master was expounding the wondrous Dharma, but two scabby wandering monks dragged him down and are talking wild nonsense.” The Emperor ordered them seized. A crowd pushed and hustled the two monks into the rear Dharma hall. When they came before Taizong, the monk neither raised his hands nor bowed, but looked up and said, “What does Your Majesty wish to ask me?” The Tang Emperor recognized him. “Are you the monk who gave the cassock the other day?” The Bodhisattva said, “I am.” Taizong said, “Since you came here to hear the exposition, you should simply have taken some vegetarian food. Why argue nonsense with Our master, disrupt the scripture hall and hinder Our Buddhist rites?” The Bodhisattva said, “Your master expounds the Lesser Vehicle, which cannot deliver the dead to Heaven. I have the Three Baskets of the Great Vehicle’s Buddhist teaching, which can deliver the dead from suffering and give a body long life without decay.” With an earnest look of delight, Taizong asked, “Where is this Great Vehicle teaching of yours?” The Bodhisattva said, “In the far Western Heaven, in India, at the great Thunderclap Monastery, where our Buddha dwells. It can undo the knots of a hundred grievances and dispel undeserved calamities.” Taizong said, “Do you remember it?” The Bodhisattva said, “I do.” Taizong said in great delight, “Have the master conduct him to the platform and invite him to expound it.”

The Bodhisattva took Mu Zha with her and flew onto the high platform, then stepped upon an auspicious cloud and rose straight into the Nine Heavens. She revealed her true form as the deliverer from suffering, holding the pure vase and willow branch. To her left stood Mu Zha, Hui’an, cudgel in hand and spirit braced. The Tang Emperor was so delighted that he bowed towards heaven, while his civil and military officials knelt and burned incense. Throughout the monastery, monks and nuns, Daoists and layfolk, scholars, craftsmen and merchants all worshipped and prayed. “Blessed Bodhisattva! Blessed Bodhisattva!” There is a hymn of praise to prove it. This is what they saw:

Blessed vapours scatter in bright profusion;auspicious light guards the Dharma body.In the shining firmament of the Nine Heavensappears a perfected woman.Upon her head the Bodhisattva wearsa pearl-fringed diadem, fastened with golden leaves, spread with kingfisher-blue flowers, shedding golden light and giving forth blessed vapours.Upon her body is a robe of plain blue silk, pale in colour and delicately patterned, with coiling golden dragons and flying coloured phoenixes.Upon her breast hangs a fragrant pendant of joined ornaments, bright against the moon, dancing in the clear breeze, mingled with precious pearls and set with green jade.About her waist is an embroidered velvet skirt of ice-silkworm silk, woven with golden edges, mounting coloured clouds and hastening over the jewelled sea. Before her she also leads a white parrot with yellow feathers and a red beak, which flies over the eastern ocean, roams the whole world, repays kindness and fulfils its filial duty.In her hand she holds a precious vase that bestows grace and delivers the world. In the vase stands a drooping willow branch that sprinkles the azure heavens, dispels great evil and sweeps away the lingering mist.Jade rings pass through embroidered clasps;golden lotuses lie deep beneath her feet. She may come and go through the Three Heavens. This indeed is Guanshiyin, who saves from suffering and distress.

The sight so delighted Emperor Taizong that he forgot his realm; the civil and military officials were so enraptured that they forgot court ceremony. The whole crowd chanted, “Homage to the Bodhisattva Guanshiyin.” Taizong at once ordered a skilled painter to make a portrait of the Bodhisattva’s true form. At the command they selected Wu Daozi, a master of portraying gods and sages, with far-seeing, lofty insight. (This was the man who later painted the meritorious ministers in Lingyan Pavilion.) He spread out his materials and with his wondrous brush portrayed her true likeness. The Bodhisattva’s auspicious cloud drew farther away, and in a moment the golden light was gone. Only a written card came whirling down from midair. A few lines of verse were clearly inscribed upon it. The verse said:

I bow to the sovereign of the Great Tang:in the West are wondrous writings. The road runs a hundred and eight thousand li;seek the Great Vehicle with devotion.Bring these scriptures back to your great realm, and they can lift ghosts out of their ranks. If anyone is willing to go,let him seek the perfected fruit and golden body.

On reading the verse, Taizong ordered the monks, “End this splendid assembly for now. When We have sent someone to fetch the Great Vehicle scriptures, We shall renew Our sincerity and perform these works of merit again.” The officials all obeyed. There in the monastery he asked, “Who will accept Our command and go to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures?” Before he had finished asking, the master stepped out beside him and bowed. “This poor monk has little ability, but gladly offers the service of a dog or horse to seek the true scriptures for Your Majesty and pray that my sovereign’s realm may stand forever.” The Tang Emperor was delighted. He went forward, raised him with his imperial hands and said, “If you can indeed show such loyalty and worth, Master, and do not fear the distant road or the toil of crossing mountains and rivers, We gladly swear brotherhood with you.” Xuanzang bowed his head in thanks. The Tang Emperor, truly a most worthy and virtuous man, went before the Buddha in the monastery and exchanged four bows with Xuanzang, calling him “Our imperial younger brother, the holy monk.” Xuanzang could not thank him enough. “Your Majesty, what virtue or ability has this poor monk to deserve such heavenly favour? On this journey I shall devote my life and strength to reaching the Western Heaven. If I do not reach it and obtain the true scriptures, even in death I shall not dare return to my country, but shall sink forever into hell.” He offered incense before the Buddha and made this his vow. The Tang Emperor was delighted and ordered his procession back to the palace. An auspicious day would be chosen and travel documents issued for the departure. His carriage returned, and everyone dispersed.

Xuanzang also returned to Hongfu Monastery. The monks there and his disciples had already heard of the quest for scriptures. They all came to see him and asked, “Is it true you have vowed to go to the Western Heaven?” Xuanzang said, “It is true.” His disciples said, “Master, we have often heard people say that the road to the Western Heaven is long and full of tigers, leopards and demons. We fear you may go and never return. Your life will hardly be safe.” Xuanzang said, “I have made a solemn vow: if I do not obtain the true scriptures, I shall sink forever into hell. Above all, I have received my sovereign’s favour and cannot but repay my country with all my loyalty. This journey is truly dim and uncertain; whether good or ill awaits me is impossible to tell.” He added, “Disciples, after I go, whether two or three years pass, or five or seven, watch the pine branches inside the monastery gate. When their tips point east, I shall be coming home. Otherwise, I shall certainly not return.” His disciples took these words deeply to heart.

Early the next morning Taizong held court, assembled his civil and military officials and had documents drawn up for the quest for scriptures, stamped with the precious seal authorizing passage. An official of the Directorate of Astronomy reported, “Today falls under the auspicious Star of Human Honour and is suitable for setting out on a long journey.” The Tang Emperor was delighted. A palace chamberlain then reported, “Your imperial younger brother, the master, awaits your command outside the audience gate.” He was immediately summoned to the hall. “Little brother,” said the Emperor, “today is an auspicious day for setting out. Here are your documents for crossing the frontiers. We also have a purple-gold begging bowl to give you for seeking food along the way. Two attendants accustomed to long journeys have been chosen, and We bestow a horse upon you to carry you on your distant travels. You may now set out.” Xuanzang was delighted. He thanked the Emperor, received the things and had no wish to delay. The Tang Emperor arranged his procession and went with his officials to see him beyond the pass. There the monks and disciples of Hongfu Monastery had brought Xuanzang’s winter and summer clothes and were waiting. The Tang Emperor first had the luggage and horse made ready, then told an attendant to take a jug and pour wine. Taizong raised his cup and asked, “Little brother, by what honourable title are you known?” Xuanzang said, “This poor monk has left the household life and has not dared assume a title.” Taizong said, “The Bodhisattva said that in the Western Heaven there are three baskets of scriptures. You might take your title from them. How would you like to be called Sanzang?” Xuanzang again thanked him, accepted the imperial wine and said, “Your Majesty, wine is the first prohibition for a monk. This poor monk has never drunk it in his life.” Taizong said, “Today’s departure differs from other occasions. This is vegetarian wine. Drink just this one cup to fulfil Our wish to see you off.” Sanzang dared not refuse. He took the wine and was about to drink when Taizong lowered his head, picked up a pinch of earth with his imperial fingers and flicked it into the cup. Sanzang did not understand. Taizong smiled. “Little brother, when you go to the Western Heaven, how soon can you return?” Sanzang said, “Within three years I shall come straight back to your great realm.” Taizong said, “Years are long, the mountains far and the road distant. Drink this wine, little brother: ‘Cherish a pinch of earth from home rather than ten thousand taels of gold abroad.’ Only then did Sanzang grasp the meaning of the earth. He thanked the Emperor again, drank the cup dry, took his leave and went out through the pass. The Tang Emperor returned to the palace.
