Now, Pilgrim Sun leapt away with a somersault. The monks of Guanyin Monastery, great and small, along with the ascetics, serving boys and attendants, were so frightened that every one bowed towards the sky. “Grandfather! So he is a divine sage come down to earth, riding clouds and mist! No wonder fire could not hurt him. Curse that old skinflint of ours, who could not recognize the man before him! All his scheming has only brought disaster on himself today.” Sanzang said, “Please rise, all of you. There is no need to curse him now. If he finds the cassock on this trip, everything will be settled. But I fear that if he cannot find it, my disciple’s temper is none too good. I cannot say what will become of your lives. I fear not one of you will escape.” At these words every monk was sick with fear. They prayed to Heaven and made vows, asking only that the cassock be found and each of their lives preserved. Let us leave them there for now.

Meanwhile, the Great Sage Sun reached the air, gave his waist a twist and was already above Black Wind Mountain. He halted his cloud and looked carefully. It was indeed a fine mountain, and spring was at its height. This is what he saw:
Ten thousand ravines vie in flowing water;a thousand cliffs compete in beauty.Birds sing where no one can be seen;blossoms fall, yet the trees are fragrant still. After rain, the sky meets moist green walls of rock;with the wind, pines unfurl their emerald screens.Mountain grasses sprout, wild flowers bloom, on sheer cliffs and steep crags;creeping vines grow, fine trees flourish, on lofty ridges and level knolls. No hermit meets the eye;where could a woodcutter be found?Beside the stream two cranes drink;upon the rocks wild apes romp.Peaks pile high like coiled shells, ranged in dark blue-green;heights mass their emerald hues and play with the gleam of mountain mist.

As Pilgrim admired the mountain scenery, he suddenly heard voices beside a slope of fragrant grass. He stepped softly, hid his tracks and slipped beneath a rocky cliff to steal a look. There were three demons sitting on the ground: a black fellow in the place of honour, a Daoist below him on the left and a White-Robed Scholar (Baiyi Xiushi) below him on the right. They were holding forth at length on setting up cauldrons and furnaces, kneading cinnabar and refining mercury, white snow and yellow sprouts, and the teachings of deviant sects. In the midst of their talk, the black fellow laughed and said, “The day after tomorrow is the day of my mother’s ordeal. I hope you two gentlemen will honour me with a visit.” The White-Robed Scholar said, “We come every year to wish the Great King long life. How could we fail to come this year?” The black fellow said, “Last night I obtained a treasure called a brocade Buddha robe. It is truly a splendid thing to admire. Tomorrow I shall make it the centrepiece of my birthday celebration and give a grand banquet, inviting the Daoist masters of all the mountains to celebrate the robe. What do you say to calling it the Buddha-Robe Assembly?” The Daoist laughed. “Excellent, excellent, excellent! Tomorrow I shall come first to offer birthday greetings, then the day after tomorrow I shall come again for the banquet.”

When Pilgrim heard of the Buddha robe, he was certain it was his treasure. Unable to contain his anger, he leapt out from the rocky cliff, raised the gold-banded cudgel in both hands and shouted, “You thieving monsters! You steal my cassock and mean to hold a Buddha-Robe Assembly? Bring it back at once!” With a cry of “Stop where you are!” he swung his cudgel at their heads. In alarm, the black fellow turned into wind and fled, and the Daoist rode off on a cloud. Only the White-Robed Scholar was killed by the blow. Pilgrim dragged him over to examine him and found that he was a white-patterned snake demon. He went the whole way, lifted it up and smashed it into five or seven pieces. Then he headed deep into the mountain to search for the black fellow. Rounding a sharp peak and passing a steep ridge, he saw a cave dwelling rising before a sheer cliff. This is what he saw:
Mists and rosy clouds drift far and faint;pines and cypresses stand thick and dark.Mists and rosy clouds drift far and faint, filling the gateway with colour;pines and cypresses stand thick and dark, encircling the door with green.A bridge is laid with withered logs;creeping vines wind round the summit.Birds carry red petals to a cloudy ravine;deer tread fragrant thickets on their way to a terrace of rock. Before the gate, the season urges flowers into bloom, and the wind carries their fragrance.Amid green willows along the bank, orioles flit;beside the shore, bright peach blossoms stir with fluttering butterflies.Though this wild place may seem unworthy of praise, its scenery surpasses the foot of Penglai.

Pilgrim reached the entrance and found the two stone doors firmly shut. A horizontal stone slab above them bore six large characters, plainly written: “Black Wind Mountain, Black Wind Cave.” He swung his cudgel at once and called, “Open the door!” A little demon guarding the entrance opened it and came out. “Who are you, daring to strike our immortal cave?” Pilgrim cursed him. “You wicked beast, looking for death! What sort of place is this, to call itself an immortal cave? Are you fit to use the word ‘immortal’? Hurry inside and tell that black fellow of yours to bring out your lord’s cassock at once. Then I shall spare the lives of your whole nest.” The little demon rushed inside to report, “Great King, there will be no Buddha-Robe Assembly! A monk with a hairy face and a Thunder God’s mouth is outside asking for his cassock.” Driven back from the grassy slope by Pilgrim, the black fellow had only just shut the doors and had scarcely settled into his seat when he heard this. He thought to himself, “Where has this fellow come from? So insolent that he dares come shouting at my very door!” He ordered his armour brought, put it on, took up a black-tasselled spear and went outside. Pilgrim stood to one side of the entrance, iron cudgel in hand, and opened his eyes wide to look. Sure enough, the monster was a fearsome sight:
A bowl-shaped iron helmet gleams like black lacquer;dark-gold armour shines in splendour.A black gauze robe spreads wind-filled sleeves;a black-green silken sash lets its long tassels hang.In his hand he grips a black-tasselled spear;on his feet he wears a pair of black leather boots. His golden eyes flash like streaks of lightning:this is the mountain’s Black Wind King (Heifeng Wang).
Pilgrim laughed to himself. “This fellow looks just like a kiln worker, no different from a man who packs coal. He must make his living scraping charcoal here. How else could he be black from head to foot?” The monster called out harshly, “What sort of monk are you, daring to behave so boldly here?” Iron cudgel in hand, Pilgrim charged up to him and roared, “Enough idle talk! Give back your old grandfather’s cassock, quickly!” The monster said, “Which monastery are you from? Where did you lose your cassock, that you dare come here demanding it?” Pilgrim said, “My cassock was left in the abbot’s quarters at the back of Guanyin Monastery, due north of here. When the monastery caught fire, you took advantage of the confusion to rob it. You stole the cassock and mean to celebrate your birthday with a Buddha-Robe Assembly. How dare you deny it? Give it back at once and I shall spare your life. If even half a ‘no’ comes between your teeth, I shall topple Black Wind Mountain, stamp Black Wind Cave flat and grind every demon in this cave of yours to powder.”

At these words the monster gave a cold laugh. “You wretch! So you were the one who set last night’s fire. You were up on the abbot’s roof, doing violence and summoning wind. Yes, I took a cassock. What do you mean to do about it? Where are you from? What is your name? What great powers have you, to dare spout such wild boasts?” Pilgrim said, “So you do not recognize your old grandfather! Your old grandfather is the disciple of Master Sanzang, the Emperor’s brother at the court of the exalted Great Tang. My surname is Sun, my name Wukong, and I am Pilgrim. If you ask about Old Sun’s powers, once I tell you, you will be frightened out of your wits and drop dead before my eyes.” The monster said, “We have never met. What powers have you? Tell me, and I shall listen.” Pilgrim laughed. “My son, stand steady and listen closely. I:
Since childhood, I have wielded mighty powers, changing with the wind and showing a hero’s mettle.I nurtured my nature and cultivated truth through years and days, leapt free of rebirth and escaped my allotted death. With a single sincere heart I sought the Way,gathering shoots of medicine on the Mountain of the Spirit Tower and the Square Inch.On that mountain lived an old immortal master,a hundred and eight thousand years of age.Old Sun bowed to him as Master, and he showed me a road to everlasting life.He said the elixir lay within my body;seeking it outside was wasted labour. He taught me the Great-Grade Heavenly Immortal Formula;without firm roots, it would be hard to endure.I turned the light back, looked within and sat with a quiet heart;the sun and moon within me joined as Kan and Li.Thinking of nothing, wholly free of desire,I cleansed the six faculties and made my body strong. To turn age back to youth was easy;the road from common mortal to sage was not far.Three years without leakage made an immortal body, spared the torments ordinary people suffer.I roamed at play through the Ten Isles and Three Islands, travelling to the ends of the sea and the edges of Heaven. My allotted life was just over three hundred years;I could not yet ascend to the Nine Heavens.I went beneath the sea and subdued a dragon for a true treasure:thus I gained the gold-banded cudgel. Before Flower-Fruit Mountain I ruled as commander;within the Water-Curtain Cave I gathered hosts of demons. The Jade Emperor sent an imperial summons, granting me the highest rank, Great Sage Equal to Heaven.Several times I made havoc in the Hall of Divine Mists;again and again I stole the Queen Mother of the West’s peaches.A hundred thousand heavenly soldiers came to subdue me,massing spears and sabres in close-packed ranks.I fought the Heavenly King back to the upper world;Nezha fled in pain, leading his troops away. The True Lord Erlang, the Manifest Saint, could transform, but Old Sun fought him hard and held him to a draw. The Most High Patriarch of the Way, Guanyin and the Jade Emperorwatched the demon hunt from the Southern Gate of Heaven. But Lord Lao lent a hand in the battle, and Erlang seized me and took me to Heaven’s offices. They bound me to the Demon-Subduing Pillarand ordered divine soldiers to cut off my head.Sabres hacked and hammers struck, yet could not harm me;then they tried thunderbolts and burning fire.Old Sun had powers indeedand feared not the slightest bit of it.They sent me into Lord Lao’s furnace to be refined, slowly roasting me in the divine fire of the Six Ding. When the days were up and the furnace opened, I leapt out, iron cudgel in hand, and raced round Heaven.I swept everywhere with nothing to block my path, making havoc through the Thirty-three Heavens. Our Buddha brought his magic into play, and Five Elements Mountain pinned Old Sun at the waist. For five full centuries I lay beneath it,until, happily, Sanzang set out from the Tang court. Now I have turned to the true path and travel west, bound for the Thunderclap Monastery to behold the Buddha’s white jade tuft.Go and ask through Heaven and earth and all four seas:I am the most famous demon of every age.”

The monster laughed when he heard this. “So you are that Keeper of the Horses who made havoc in the Heavenly Palace?” Nothing angered Pilgrim more than being called Keeper of the Horses. At these words he flew into a rage and cursed, “You thieving monster! You steal the cassock and refuse to return it, then insult your lord as well! Stay where you are and take my cudgel!” The black fellow dodged sideways, took up his long spear and struck swiftly to meet him. What a fine battle these two fought!
The As-You-Will cudgel, the black-tasselled spear: at the cave mouth both display their strength.Thrusts aimed at heart and face;blows to wound arm and head. One flings a crafty sideways cudgel stroke;the other darts three swift, straight spear thrusts. The white tiger climbs the mountain, reaching with its claws;the yellow dragon lies across the road, turning swiftly round.Coloured mist sprays forth, fine rays of light stream out: the powers of these two demon immortals are beyond measure. One is the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, who has turned to the true path;one is the Great Black King, who has become a spirit. In this mountain clash, each fights over a cassock, and neither behaves well.

The monster and Pilgrim fought a dozen or more rounds without either winning. Gradually the red sun reached noon. The black fellow raised his spear to hold off the iron cudgel. “Pilgrim Sun, let us stop fighting for now. Wait until I have eaten, and then I shall fight you again.” Pilgrim said, “You wicked beast! And you call yourself a man? What sort of fine fellow needs food after half a day? Old Sun was pinned beneath a mountain for over five hundred years without tasting a drop of broth or water. How could I be hungry already? No excuses! Stay where you are and give back my cassock. Only then shall I let you go and eat.” The monster made a feint with his spear, withdrew into the cave and shut the stone doors. He called the little demons inside, set about preparing a banquet and wrote invitations to the demon kings of the various mountains for the celebration. Let us leave him there for now.

Meanwhile, Pilgrim could not force the doors open and had no choice but to return to Guanyin Monastery. Its monks had buried the old monk and were all attending the Tang Monk in the abbot’s quarters. The morning meal was over, and now they had set out the midday meal. As they replenished the broth and changed the water, they saw Pilgrim descend from the sky. The monks bowed and welcomed him into the abbot’s quarters to see Sanzang. “Wukong, you are back?” Sanzang said. “What of the cassock?” Pilgrim said, “I have found out what happened. Luckily we did not wrong these monks. It was the demon of Black Wind Mountain who stole it. Old Sun went to look for him in secret and saw him talking with a White-Robed Scholar and an old Daoist, sitting beside that slope of fragrant grass. The monster confessed without even a beating. Out of the blue he said that the day after tomorrow was the day of his mother’s ordeal, and he was inviting all the evil creatures to celebrate his birthday. He had obtained a brocade Buddha robe last night and meant to make it the centrepiece of a grand birthday banquet, which he called the Buddha-Robe Assembly, to celebrate and admire it. Old Sun rushed up and struck with his cudgel. The black fellow turned into wind and fled, and the Daoist vanished too. I only killed the White-Robed Scholar, who proved to be a white-patterned snake that had become a spirit. I hurried after him to his cave mouth and called him out to fight. He has admitted he took it back there. We fought all this half-day with neither winning. The monster went into his cave to eat, shut the stone doors and was too frightened to come out and fight. Old Sun has come back to see you, Master, and bring you the news first. Now that we know where the cassock is, there is no fear he will fail to return it.”
At these words some monks pressed their palms together and others knocked their heads on the ground. All chanted, “Namo Amitabha Buddha! Now that it has been traced today, our lives are saved!” Pilgrim said, “Do not be so pleased and happy yet. I still do not have it in my hands, and my Master has not left your gate. Only when we have the cassock and you have sent my Master safely on his way will you be able to rest easy. If anything at all goes wrong, do you think Old Sun is an easy lord to deal with? Have you given my Master good tea and food? Have you fed the horse good fodder?” The monks all answered at once, “Yes, yes, yes! We have not neglected the venerable sir in the slightest.” Sanzang said, “In the half-day since you left, I have had tea and refreshments three times and two vegetarian meals. They have not dared neglect me. Only do your utmost to find the cassock and bring it back.” Pilgrim said, “No hurry. Since we know where it is, I promise to catch the fellow and return your property. Set your mind at rest, set it at rest.”

As they spoke, the abbot of the upper range prepared another vegetarian meal and invited Lord Sun to eat. Pilgrim ate a little, then mounted an auspicious cloud and went off to search again. On his way he saw a little demon coming along the main road, a rosewood box tucked beneath his left arm. Guessing that the box must hold some letter or invitation, Pilgrim raised his cudgel and struck him on the head. The poor creature could not bear the blow and was flattened like a meat patty. Pilgrim dragged him to the roadside and opened the box. Sure enough, there was an invitation. It read:

When Pilgrim read it, he burst out laughing. “That old skinflint! His death was no more than he deserved. So he was in league with demons all along! No wonder he lived to two hundred and seventy. The demon must have taught him some little trick of taking in breath, which gave him such a long life. Old Sun still remembers what he looked like. Let me change into that monk, go inside the cave and see where they have put my cassock. If I can get my hands on it and bring it straight back, that will save some effort.”

A fine Great Sage! He recited a spell and changed with the wind, becoming the very image of the old monk. Hiding his iron cudgel, he strode straight to the cave mouth and called, “Open the door!” The little demon opened it, saw his appearance and hurried back to report, “Great King, Elder Jinchi is here.” The monster was astonished. “I only just sent a little one to invite him. He cannot even have reached the monastery yet. How has the elder come so quickly? The little one must have missed him. Surely Pilgrim Sun sent him to ask for the cassock. Steward, hide the Buddha robe. Do not let him see it.”

Pilgrim went through the front gate. In the courtyard, pines and bamboo mingled their green, peaches and plums vied in beauty, flowers bloomed in clumps and orchids gave off fragrance in clusters. It was indeed a cave paradise. Above the second gate he saw a pair of lines:
“Hidden quietly in deep mountains, free of worldly cares;dwelling secluded in an immortal cave, delighting in nature’s truth.”
Pilgrim thought to himself, “This fellow, too, is a monster who has shaken off the world’s dirt and dust and understands his allotted lot.” He entered and went on through the third gate, past painted pillars and carved beams, bright windows and coloured doors. The black fellow wore a padded jacket of black-green silk, a raven-blue cloak of flowered damask, a soft cap with black horn-like corners and a pair of black deerskin boots. Seeing Pilgrim enter, he straightened his clothes and cap and came down the steps to welcome him. “Old friend Jinchi, I have not visited you these last few days. Please sit, please sit.” Pilgrim greeted him with due courtesy. Greetings over, they sat; seated, they drank tea. When the tea was finished, the demon rose a little from his chair. “I sent you a brief note just now, asking you to join me the day after tomorrow. Why have you honoured me with a visit today, old friend?” Pilgrim said, “I was just coming to pay my respects when I happened to meet your gracious letter on the road. Seeing that you planned a refined gathering for the Buddha robe, I hurried here in the hope of taking a look.” The monster laughed. “You are mistaken, old friend. This cassock belongs to the Tang Monk. He was staying at your monastery. Surely you saw it there? Why come to me to look at it?” Pilgrim said, “This poor monk borrowed it, but it was late at night and I had not yet unfolded it when the Great King took it away. Then fire burned down my humble mountain home and I lost my possessions. The Tang Monk’s disciple is rather fierce, and in all the confusion we searched everywhere without finding it. It turns out that the Great King’s abundant good fortune brought it into his keeping, so I have come expressly to see it.”

In the midst of their talk, a little demon patrolling the mountain came to report, “Great King, disaster! The messenger carrying the invitation has been killed by Pilgrim Sun beside the main road. Pilgrim took his cue from it, changed into Elder Jinchi and has come to trick you out of the Buddha robe!” The monster thought, “I wondered why the elder had come today, and so quickly. Sure enough, it is he!” He sprang up, snatched his spear and thrust at Pilgrim. Pilgrim hurriedly drew the cudgel from his ear, resumed his true form and parried the spear point. He leapt out of the central hall, fighting his way through the courtyard and out beyond the front gate. The demons in the cave were frightened out of their courage; young and old in the household were scared out of their souls. What a fine contest they fought on the mountain, fiercer than the last! A fine battle:
The bold Monkey King poses as a monk;the shrewd black fellow hides the Buddha robe.Words pass back and forth, the chances deftly seized;each meets the other’s moves without a slip.He longs to see the cassock, yet finds no way to see it;the treasure’s hidden mystery is subtle and wondrous indeed. The little mountain scout reports disaster;the old demon flares in anger and displays divine might. They wheel and fight their way from Black Wind Cave, spear and cudgel struggling to decide right and wrong. The cudgel meets the long spear with a ringing clash;the spear greets the iron cudgel in a blaze of light.Wukong’s transformations are seldom seen among men;the demon’s magic powers are rare upon this earth. One wants the Buddha robe to celebrate his birthday;could the other leave in peace without the cassock? In this bitter struggle, neither can break away;even a living Buddha come to earth could not end the siege.

The two fought from the cave mouth up to the summit, then from the summit out beyond the clouds, breathing mist and spraying wind, sending sand flying and stones hurtling. They fought until the red sun sank in the west, with neither winning. The monster said, “You fellow named Sun, stop for now. It is late today and no time to keep fighting. Go away, go away! Come tomorrow morning, and we shall settle which of us lives and which dies.” Pilgrim shouted, “Do not go, my son! If you mean to fight, fight like a fighter. You cannot make an excuse of nightfall!” He swung his cudgel at the monster relentlessly, heedless of head or face. The black fellow again turned into a gust of clear wind, went back into his cave and shut the stone doors tight, refusing to come out.

Pilgrim could find no way to deal with him and had to return to Guanyin Monastery. Lowering his cloud, he called, “Master!” Sanzang had been watching eagerly for him. Suddenly seeing him before his eyes, he was delighted; then, seeing no cassock in his hands, he grew afraid again. “Why have you still not brought the cassock back this time?” Pilgrim took the invitation from his sleeve and handed it to Sanzang. “Master, that monster and the dead old skinflint were friends all along. He sent a little demon with this invitation, asking him to the Buddha-Robe Assembly. Old Sun killed the little demon, changed into the old monk and went into the cave, where I wheedled a cup of tea out of him. I wanted to ask to see the cassock, but he would not bring it out. While we sat there, some mountain patrol fellow let the secret slip, and he began fighting me. We fought right up to this hour without either getting the better of the other. Seeing it was late, he slipped back into his cave and shut the stone doors tight. Old Sun had no choice but to come back for the time being.” Sanzang said, “How do your powers compare with his?” Pilgrim said, “I am not much stronger. We can only fight to a draw.”
Sanzang read the invitation and handed it to the abbot. “Could your Master have been a demon too?” The abbot hastily fell to his knees. “Venerable sir, my Master was human. It was only that the Great Black King had cultivated the human way and often came to the monastery to discuss the scriptures with him. He taught my Master some arts of nourishing the spirit and taking in breath, so they called each other friends.” Pilgrim said, “These monks have no demonic air about them. Every one has a round head facing Heaven and square feet treading earth. They are just a little fatter and taller than Old Sun; they are no demons. Look at what the invitation says: ‘Your junior Xiongpi.’ This creature must be a black bear that has become a spirit.” Sanzang said, “I have heard the ancients say, ‘Bears are like apes.’ They are all beasts. How could he become a spirit?” Pilgrim laughed. “Old Sun is a beast, yet I became the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. How am I different from him? In general, any creature in this world with nine openings can cultivate itself and become an immortal.” Sanzang said again, “You just said his powers were equal to yours. How will you defeat him and get my cassock back?” Pilgrim said, “Never mind, never mind. I have a way to deal with him.”

As they discussed it, the monks set out the evening meal and invited master and disciple to eat. Sanzang told them to light a lamp and went back to rest in the meditation hall at the front. The monks all huddled against the walls, threw up makeshift shelters and lay down to sleep, leaving the abbot’s quarters at the back to the heads of the upper and lower ranges. The night was still. This is what they saw:
The Milky Way reveals its reflection;the jade vault of Heaven is free of dust.Stars shine brightly all across the sky;on the water, waves leave not a trace.Ten thousand sounds are hushed;birds are gone from a thousand mountains.Fishermen’s lights beside the stream die out;the Buddha lamp upon the pagoda grows dim.Last night the monks’ bells and drums rang out;tonight, everywhere, the sound of weeping.

They spent the night in the meditation hall. With the cassock on his mind, how could Sanzang sleep soundly? He turned over and saw pale light coming through the window, then hurriedly got up and called, “Wukong, it is dawn! Go and find the cassock, quickly!” Pilgrim sprang up in a single bound. Seeing the monks standing by with hot water and refreshments, he said, “Take good care of my Master. Old Sun is going.” Sanzang got out of bed and caught hold of him. “Where are you going?” Pilgrim said, “I think this whole business is the Bodhisattva Guanyin’s fault. She has this Chan monastery here and receives the people’s incense offerings, yet lets a demon live next door. I shall go to the South Sea, find her and have a word with her. I shall make her come herself and ask the demon to give me back the cassock.” Sanzang said, “When will you be back?” Pilgrim said, “At the quickest, I shall finish by the end of breakfast; at the latest, by noon. You monks, attend him well. Old Sun is off!”

He said he was off, and already there was no trace of him. In a moment he reached the South Sea, stopped his cloud and looked. This is what he saw:
The vast sea stretches far away, its waters joining Heaven.Auspicious light enfolds the universe;blessed vapour shines upon mountains and rivers.A thousand layers of snowy waves roar at the blue sky;ten thousand folds of misty billows surge through the white day.Water flies into the open land;waves roll all around.Water flies into the open land with a booming thunderclap;waves roll all around with a crashing peal.Say no more of the waters;look now at their midst.A precious mountain rises, dim in fivefold colour:red, yellow, purple, black, green and blue. Here at last is Guanyin’s true and splendid realm:look upon Mount Potalaka in the South Sea.A fine place! Mountain peaks soar high, their summits piercing the void.Amid them grow a thousand wondrous flowersand a hundred kinds of blessed herbs.Wind sways the precious trees;sunlight shines on golden lotuses.Guanyin Hallis roofed with glazed tiles;Tide-Sound Cavehas doors faced with tortoiseshell.Parrots chatter in the shade of green willows;peacocks cry in the Purple Bamboo Grove. On the patterned rocks,Dharma guardians stand in majesty;before the agate shore,Mu Zha stands in might.

Pilgrim could never have finished admiring those strange and wondrous sights. He lowered his cloud straight down beneath the bamboo grove, where heavenly beings were already waiting to welcome him. “The Bodhisattva recently told us all that the Great Sage had turned to goodness, and praised it highly. Now that you protect the Tang Monk, how have you found time to come here?” Pilgrim said, “While protecting him, I met with a difficulty on the road. I have come expressly to see the Bodhisattva. Please announce me.” The heavenly beings went to the cave mouth to report, and the Bodhisattva called him in. Pilgrim approached in the prescribed manner and bowed beneath her precious lotus throne. The Bodhisattva asked, “What brings you here?” Pilgrim said, “My Master came upon your Chan monastery on the road. You receive mortals’ incense offerings there, yet allow a black bear spirit to live next door. You let him steal my Master’s cassock, and he has refused to return it after repeated demands. I have come expressly to ask you for it.” The Bodhisattva said, “What outrageous talk from this monkey! If a bear spirit stole your cassock, why come to me to demand it? It was all your doing, you wicked, reckless monkey. You showed off a treasure and let petty men see it. Then you did violence, summoned wind and stirred up fire, burning down my Lower Monastery of Lingering Cloud. And now you come here to make trouble for me!” Hearing the Bodhisattva say this, Pilgrim knew she understood past and future. He hurriedly bowed. “Bodhisattva, forgive your disciple’s offence. It happened exactly as you say. But that monster will not give me the cassock, and my Master wants to recite that spell again. Old Sun cannot bear the headache, so I have come to beg your help, Bodhisattva. In your compassion, please help me capture the demon and recover the robe so that we can continue west.” The Bodhisattva said, “That monster has many magical powers, and they are no less than yours. Very well. For the Tang Monk’s sake, I shall go there with you.” At these words Pilgrim thanked her and bowed again. He invited the Bodhisattva to come outside, and together they mounted an auspicious cloud. Soon they reached Black Wind Mountain, lowered their cloud and followed the path in search of the cave.

As they went along, a Daoist came out before them on the hillside, carrying a glass tray with two elixir pills upon it. He was walking forwards when Pilgrim ran straight into him, drew his cudgel and struck him on the head. Brains flowed from his skull and blood spurted from his body. The Bodhisattva cried out in alarm, “You monkey! Still behaving so outrageously! He did not steal your cassock, he did not know you, and you had no quarrel with him. Why kill him like that?” Pilgrim said, “Bodhisattva, you do not recognize him. He is a friend of the black bear spirit. Yesterday he and a White-Robed Scholar sat talking beside the grassy slope. The day after tomorrow is the black spirit’s birthday, and he invited them to celebrate at the Buddha-Robe Assembly. This fellow was to come today to offer birthday greetings, then tomorrow to celebrate at the Buddha-Robe Assembly. That is how I recognize him. He must be going to wish the demon long life today.” The Bodhisattva said, “If that is how it is, very well.” Pilgrim lifted the Daoist up to look, and found he was a grey wolf. On the underside of the tray beside him were engraved the words “Made by Lingxuzi.”
When Pilgrim saw this, he laughed. “Good fortune, good fortune! It makes things easy for Old Sun and saves the Bodhisattva some effort. This monster has confessed without a beating, and the other will be done for today.” The Bodhisattva said, “Wukong, what do you mean?” Pilgrim said, “Bodhisattva, I, Wukong, have a saying: turn the other fellow’s plan to your own use. I wonder whether you will do as I suggest?” The Bodhisattva said, “Tell me.” Pilgrim said, “Look, Bodhisattva: the two elixir pills on this tray will be our greeting gift to the demon. The four characters engraved underneath, ‘Made by Lingxuzi’, will be our means of drawing him in. If you will follow my advice, I can devise a plan for you. There will be no need for weapons or the trouble of battle. The demon will come to grief at once, and the Buddha robe will appear at once. If you will not, then you go west, Bodhisattva, and I, Wukong, go east. We can count the robe as a gift to him, and Tang Sanzang can go empty-handed.” The Bodhisattva laughed. “What a glib monkey!” Pilgrim said, “I would not dare. It is only a plan.” The Bodhisattva said, “What is this plan of yours?” Pilgrim said, “Since the tray says ‘Made by Lingxuzi’, I suppose that is this Daoist’s name. If you will do as I suggest, Bodhisattva, change into this Daoist. I shall eat one of the pills and change into another, just a little larger. Then you carry the tray and its two elixir pills to wish the demon long life, and offer him the larger pill. Once he swallows it, Old Sun will get to work inside him. If he will not hand over the Buddha robe, Old Sun will weave another for him out of his guts!” The Bodhisattva had no choice but to nod her assent. Pilgrim laughed. “Well?”

Then the Bodhisattva, with her vast compassion, boundless powers and countless incarnations, joined her heart to her intent and her intent to her body. In a fleeting moment she became Immortal Lingxuzi:
A crane-feather cloak stirs with an immortal breeze;he floats as if about to walk the void. His weathered face is old as pine and cypress;such fine features have never been seen, past or present. On and on he goes, yet nowhere does he abide;in suchness itself, distinctions still appear. All comes back to a single Dharma;only the demon’s body sets them apart.
Pilgrim looked and said, “Wonderful, wonderful! Is this a demon Bodhisattva, or a Bodhisattva demon?” The Bodhisattva laughed. “Wukong, Bodhisattvas and demons are all a single thought. If we speak of their original nature, none has any being of its own.” At this Pilgrim understood in his heart. He turned and changed into an elixir pill:
Rolling on the tray, never unsteady;round and bright, with never a corner.Three by three, Goulou blends;six by six, Shaoweng weighs.Tiles melt in the flame of gold;a mani pearl shines in broad day.As for the lead and mercury outside,do not suppose their measure easy to judge.

The pill Pilgrim had become was, after all, a little larger. The Bodhisattva made sure which it was, took the glass tray and went straight to the demon’s cave entrance. Looking about, she found it was indeed:
Deep cliffs and perilous crags, clouds rising upon the ridges;dark cypresses and green pines, wind sighing through the woods.Deep cliffs and perilous crags:truly a place where demons come and go and few mortals dwell.Dark cypresses and green pines:a place where perfected immortals, too, might live in seclusion, rich in the spirit of the Way.The mountain has a ravine, the ravine a spring; its murmuring water sounds like a softly sobbing lute, fit for washing one’s ears. The cliffs have deer, the woods have cranes; secluded sounds of immortals stir the quiet peaks, fit for delighting the heart. This demon immortal has the destined affinity to submit to awakening;boundless mighty vows extend their compassion.
The Bodhisattva looked and was secretly pleased. “This wicked beast has claimed this mountain cave, yet he does have some affinity with the Way.” And so compassion had already arisen in her heart.
She walked to the cave mouth. The little demons guarding it recognized the familiar figure. “Master Lingxu is here!” Some went to announce her, while others showed her in. The demon had already come out to welcome her. “Lingxu, you have troubled your immortal self to honour me with a visit. My humble dwelling shines the brighter.” The Bodhisattva said, “This humble Daoist respectfully offers an elixir pill and ventures to wish you a thousand years of life.” They exchanged bows and had only just sat down when the demon began recounting what had happened yesterday. The Bodhisattva did not answer, but hurriedly brought forward the tray. “Great King, first accept this humble Daoist’s poor gift.” Fixing her eye on the larger pill, she pushed it towards him. “May the Great King live a thousand years.” The demon, too, pushed a pill towards the Bodhisattva. “May Lingxuzi share those years with me.” Their courtesies finished, the demon was just about to swallow when the pill rolled straight down his throat. Pilgrim resumed his true form and took up his fighting stance. The demon rolled to the ground. The Bodhisattva revealed her own form, asked the demon for the Buddha robe and took it. Pilgrim had already come out through his nostril. Fearing that the demon might act insolently, the Bodhisattva threw a band onto his head. The demon got up and raised his spear to strike, but Pilgrim and the Bodhisattva were already in the air, and she began reciting the true words. Again the monster’s head ached. He dropped his spear and rolled wildly over the ground. Up in the air, the Handsome Monkey King laughed till he doubled over; down on the ground, the black bear monster rolled himself into misery.

The Bodhisattva said, “Wicked beast, will you now take refuge?” The monster cried over and over, “With all my heart I wish to take refuge! Only spare my life!” Pilgrim, afraid of wasting time, wanted to strike him. The Bodhisattva hurriedly stopped him. “Do not kill him. I have a use for him.” Pilgrim said, “If you do not beat a monster like this to death, where can you possibly use him?” The Bodhisattva said, “There is no one to look after the back of my Mount Potalaka. I shall take him there to be a great guardian god of the mountain.” Pilgrim laughed. “You truly are the Compassionate Venerable who saves beings from suffering, sparing every single soul. If Old Sun had a spell like that, I would recite it a thousand goddamn times. However many black bears there were here, I would finish the lot!” Now, the monster had been conscious for some time, but truly could not bear the pain. He could only kneel on the ground and plead, “Spare my life, and I will turn to the true fruit of enlightenment.” Only then did the Bodhisattva descend in her auspicious light. She touched the crown of his head, gave him the precepts and told him to carry his long spear and attend her. At last, this very day, the black bear’s wild heart was settled; at this moment, his endless unruly nature was restrained.

The Bodhisattva instructed him, “Wukong, go back. Attend the Tang Monk well, and from now on do not grow careless or stir up trouble.” Pilgrim said, “Your disciple is deeply grateful that you came so far, Bodhisattva. I ought to escort you back.” The Bodhisattva said, “There is no need.” Pilgrim held the cassock in his hands, bowed his head to the ground and took his leave. The Bodhisattva, too, took Xiongpi with her and went straight back to the great sea. There is a poem to prove it. A poem says:
