The demon raises a cold wind and sends down heavy snow; The monk longs to worship the Buddha and treads the thick ice

Now, the faithful of Chen Village carried the pigs, sheep and sacrificial wine, along with Pilgrim and Bajie, straight to the Temple of the Great King of Numinous Response. Amid a great clamour they arranged the offerings and set the boy and girl in the place of honour. Pilgrim looked round and saw incense, flowers and candles on the offering table. Facing him was a spirit tablet with gold lettering: “The spirit of the Great King of Numinous Response.” There was no other image of a god. When everything was in place, the faithful all bowed down toward the tablet and said, “Grandfather Great King, in this year, this month, this day and this hour, Chen Cheng, master of the sacrifice, and the faithful of Chen Village, of various ages and years of birth, respectfully follow the annual custom. We offer one boy, Chen Guanbao, and one girl, Chen Yichengjin, with pigs, sheep and sacrificial wine in the prescribed amounts, for the Great King to enjoy. Bless us with winds and rains in season and abundant harvests of the five grains.” When the prayer was over, they burned the paper horses and went home. Of them we need say no more.

When Bajie saw that everyone had gone, he said to Pilgrim, “Let us go home.” Pilgrim said, “And where is your home?” Bajie said, “Back to old Chen’s house to sleep.” Pilgrim said, “The Idiot is talking nonsense again. We have promised him, so we must fulfil his wish.” Bajie said, “You call me an idiot, as though you weren’t one yourself! We only had to fool him for a bit of fun. Why go through with his sacrifice and make a real business of it?” Pilgrim said, “If you help someone, help him all the way. We must wait for that Great King to come and eat us, and see the thing through from beginning to end. Otherwise he will send disasters and do them harm, and we shall have made matters worse.”

As they were talking, they heard the wind roar. Bajie said, “This is bad! That wind means the thing is coming.” Pilgrim only called, “Say nothing. Let me answer.” In a moment an evil demon appeared outside the temple gate. See what he looked like:

Golden armour, golden helmet, gleaming bright and new;a precious belt about his waist, encircled by red cloud. His eyes shine like bright stars that rise at evening;his teeth stand in double ranks like the teeth of a saw.Mist and rosy vapour drift beneath his feet;warm, thick banks of haze surround his body. When he moves, gust after gust of ghostly wind blows cold;where he stands, layer upon layer of baleful air glows warm.He looks like a curtain-raising general guarding the royal carriage,or a great gate god keeping watch over a temple.

The monster stood across the temple gate and asked, “Whose household is making this year’s sacrifice?” Pilgrim answered with a smile, “Thank you for asking. It is the household of Chen Cheng and Chen Qing, the village heads.” Hearing this answer, the monster grew suspicious. “This boy is bold and speaks so readily. With the offerings I usually eat, I ask once and they say nothing; I ask again and their souls are frightened away; when I reach out to seize them, they are already dead. Why is today’s boy so good at answering?” Not daring to take him, the monster asked again, “What are the boy’s and girl’s names?” Pilgrim smiled. “The boy is Chen Guanbao, and the girl is Yichengjin.” The monster said, “This sacrifice follows the rules of past years. You have been offered to me, and I am to eat you.” Pilgrim said, “We would not dare resist. Please enjoy us at your ease.” At this the monster again dared not lay hands on them. Blocking the gate, he shouted, “Do not talk back to me! Every year I eat the boy first. This year I shall eat the girl first instead.” Bajie cried in alarm, “Great King, keep to the old way! Don’t eat your way out of the rules!”
