話說齊天大聖空著手敗了陣，來坐於金兜山後，撲梭梭兩眼滴淚，叫道：「師父啊，指望和你：
佛恩有德有和融，同幼同生意莫窮。同住同修同解脫，同慈同念顯靈功。同緣同相心真契，同見同知道轉通。豈料如今無主杖，空拳赤腳怎興隆！
大聖悽慘多時，心中暗想道：「那妖精認得我，我記得他在陣上誇獎道：『真個是鬧天宮之類！』這等啊，決不是凡間怪物，定然是天上兇星，想因思凡下界。又不知是那裡降下來魔頭，且須上界去查勘查勘。」

Now, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven had lost the battle and been left empty-handed. He came and sat behind Golden Pouch Mountain, tears streaming from both eyes. “Master! I had hoped that you and I would share:
The Buddha’s gracious virtue, kindness and harmony;together from childhood, together in life, a bond without end.Together we would dwell, together cultivate and win release;together in compassion and in thought, show wondrous powers.Together in affinity and form, our hearts in true accord;together see and know, and open up the Way.Who would have thought I would lose my guiding cudgel?Bare fists and bare feet — how can we prosper now!”
The Great Sage grieved for a long while, then thought to himself: “That demon knows me. I remember him praising me in the fight: ‘That really is the sort of skill that made havoc in the Heavenly Palace!’ In that case he can’t be an ordinary monster of the mortal world. He must be some baleful star from Heaven, drawn down to earth by a longing for mortal life. But I don’t know where this demon chief came down from. I had better go up to Heaven and make some enquiries.”
行者這才是以心問心，自張自主，急翻身，縱起祥雲，直至南天門外。忽擡頭見廣目天王，當面迎著長揖道：「大聖何往？」行者道：「有事要見玉帝。你在此何幹？」廣目道：「今日輪該巡視南天門。」說未了，又見那馬、趙、溫、關四大元帥作禮道：「大聖，失迎。請待茶。」行者道：「有事哩。」遂辭了廣目並四元帥，徑入南天門裡，直至靈霄殿外，果又見張道陵、葛仙翁、許旌陽、丘弘濟四天師，並南斗六司、北斗七元，都在殿前迎著行者，一齊起手道：「大聖如何到此？」又問：「保唐僧之功完否？」行者道：「早哩，早哩，路遙魔廣，才有一半之功。見如今阻住在金兜山金兜洞。有一個兕怪，把唐師父拿於洞裡，是老孫尋上門與他交戰一場，那廝神通廣大，把老孫的金箍棒搶去了，因此難縛魔王。疑是上界那個兇星思凡下界，又不知是那裡降來的魔頭，老孫因此來尋尋玉帝，問他個鉗束不嚴。」許旌陽笑道：「這猴頭還是如此放刁。」行者道：「不是放刁，我老孫一生是這口兒緊些，才尋的著個頭兒。」張道陵道：「不消多說，只與他傳報便了。」行者道：「多謝，多謝。」

Only now did Pilgrim question his own heart, taking his own counsel and command. He sprang up, mounted an auspicious cloud and went straight to the Southern Gate of Heaven. Looking up, he saw Heavenly King Virupaksha coming to meet him with a deep bow. “Where is the Great Sage going?” Pilgrim said, “I have business with the Jade Emperor. What are you doing here?” Virupaksha said, “Today is my turn to patrol the Southern Gate of Heaven.” Before he had finished, the four great marshals Ma, Zhao, Wen and Guan came to pay their respects. “Great Sage, forgive us for not meeting you sooner. Please stay for tea.” Pilgrim said, “I have business to attend to.” He took leave of Virupaksha and the four marshals, went in through the Southern Gate of Heaven and came straight to the Hall of Divine Mists. Sure enough, outside it stood the four Heavenly Masters, Zhang Daoling, Immortal Elder Ge, Xu Jingyang and Qiu Hongji, together with the Six Offices of the Southern Dipper and the Seven Primordial Stars of the Northern Dipper. They all raised their hands in greeting. “What brings the Great Sage here?” Then they asked, “Have you finished your work of protecting the Tang Monk?” Pilgrim said, “Not yet, not yet! The road is long and the demons many. We have only done half the work. Just now we are held up at Golden Pouch Cave on Golden Pouch Mountain. A rhinoceros demon has captured Master Tang and shut him in his cave. Old Sun went to his door and fought him, but the fellow has vast divine powers and snatched away Old Sun’s gold-banded cudgel, so I can’t bind the demon king. I suspect some baleful star from Heaven has longed for mortal life and come down to earth, but I don’t know where this demon chief came from. That’s why Old Sun has come to find the Jade Emperor and ask him about his slack discipline.” Xu Jingyang laughed. “This monkey is as troublesome as ever.” Pilgrim said, “I am not making trouble. Old Sun has always been rather sharp of tongue. That’s how I get to the bottom of things.” Zhang Daoling said, “No need for more talk. Just announce him.” Pilgrim said, “Many thanks, many thanks!”
當時四天師傳奏靈霄，引見玉陛。行者朝上唱個大喏道：「老官兒，累你，累你。我老孫保護唐僧往西天取經，一路凶多吉少，也不消說。於今來在金兜山，金兜洞，有一兕怪，把唐僧拿在洞裡，不知是要蒸，要煮，要晒。是老孫尋上他門，與他交戰，那怪卻就有些認得老孫，卓是神通廣大，把老孫的金箍棒搶去，因此難縛妖魔。疑是上天兇星，思凡下界，為此老孫特來啟奏。伏乞天尊垂慈洞鑒，降旨查勘兇星，發兵收剿妖魔，老孫不勝戰慄屏營之至。」卻又打個深躬道：「以聞。」傍有葛仙翁笑道：「猴子是何前倨後恭？」行者道：「不敢，不敢。不是甚前倨後恭，老孫於今是沒棒弄了。」

The four Heavenly Masters announced him in the Hall of Divine Mists and brought him before the jade steps of the throne. Pilgrim called out a greeting to the Emperor. “Old fellow, sorry to trouble you, sorry to trouble you! Old Sun is protecting the Tang Monk on his way to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven. No need to tell you how much danger and how little good fortune we’ve met along the way. Now we’ve reached Golden Pouch Cave on Golden Pouch Mountain, where a rhinoceros demon has captured the Tang Monk and shut him in his cave. I don’t know whether he means to steam him, boil him or dry him in the sun. Old Sun went to his door and fought him. The monster seemed to know Old Sun, and he certainly has vast divine powers: he snatched away Old Sun’s gold-banded cudgel, so I can’t bind him. I suspect he is a baleful star from Heaven, descended to earth through a longing for mortal life. That is why Old Sun has come especially to submit this petition. I humbly beg the Celestial Venerable to look into the matter with merciful insight, order an investigation of the baleful stars and send troops to capture and suppress the demon. Old Sun is overcome with trembling and apprehension.” Then he made another deep bow. “Respectfully submitted.” Immortal Elder Ge laughed beside him. “Why is the monkey so insolent at first and so respectful afterward?” Pilgrim said, “I wouldn’t dare, I wouldn’t dare! It’s not a matter of insolence first and respect afterward. Old Sun simply has no cudgel to play with now.”
