Eight hundred virtuous deeds must be practised;three thousand hidden merits must be amassed.Treat self and others equally, friends and foes alike.Only then can the Western Heaven’s original vow be fulfilled.The rhinoceros demon fears no blades or weapons;water and fire labour in vain and do him no harm.Lord Lao subdues him, then returns to Heaven.Smiling, he leads the green ox home.
話說那大路傍叫喚者誰？乃金兜山山神、土地，捧著紫金缽盂叫道：「聖僧啊，這缽盂飯是孫大聖向好處化來的。因你等不聽良言，誤入妖魔之手，致令大聖勞苦萬端，今日方救得出。且來吃了飯，再去走路，莫孤負孫大聖一片恭孝之心也。」三藏道：「徒弟，萬分虧你，言謝不盡。早知不出圈痕，那有此殺身之害？」行者道：「不瞞師父說，只因你不信我的圈子，卻教你受別人的圈子。多少苦楚。可嘆，可嘆！」八戒道：「怎麼又有個圈子？」行者道：「都是你這孽嘴孽舌的夯貨，弄師父遭此一場大難，著老孫翻天覆地，請天兵、水火與佛祖丹砂，盡被他使一個白森森的圈子套去。如來暗示了羅漢，對老孫說出那妖的根原，才請老君來收伏，卻是個青牛作怪。」三藏聞言，感激不盡道：「賢徒，今番經此，下次定然聽你吩咐。」

Now, who was calling beside the main road? It was the Mountain God and the Earth God of Golden Pouch Mountain. Holding up the purple-gold begging bowl, they called, “Holy monk, this bowl of rice was begged by the Great Sage Sun from a good household. Because you would not heed his kind advice, you fell into the demons’ hands and put the Great Sage to untold trouble. Only today has he managed to rescue you. Come and eat before going on. Don’t disappoint the Great Sage Sun in his devoted care for you.” Sanzang said, “My disciple, I owe you more than words of thanks can tell. Had I known to stay inside the circle, how could I have faced such mortal danger?” Pilgrim said, “To tell you the truth, Master, because you would not trust my circle, you were made to suffer someone else’s circle. What misery! A pity, a pity!” Bajie said, “What other circle?” Pilgrim said, “It was all your doing, you lout with your damned mouth and tongue! You got our master into this terrible ordeal and made Old Sun turn Heaven and earth upside down. I fetched heavenly troops, water and fire, and the Buddha’s elixir sand, and that gleaming white ring of his snatched them all away. The Buddha gave the arhats a secret hint, and they told Old Sun where the demon came from. Only then could I invite Lord Lao to subdue him. It turned out to be a green ox making trouble.” At this, Sanzang was grateful beyond measure. “Worthy disciple, after what I have suffered this time, I will certainly follow your instructions next time.”
遂此四人分吃那飯，那飯熱氣騰騰的。行者道：「這飯多時了，卻怎麼還熱？」土地跪下道：「是小神知大聖功完，才自熱來伺候。」須臾飯畢，收拾了缽盂，辭了土地、山神，那師父才攀鞍上馬，過了高山。正是：
滌慮洗心皈正覺，餐風宿水向西行。
遂此四人分吃那饭，那饭热气腾腾的。行者道：「这饭多时了，却怎么还热？」土地跪下道：「是小神知大圣功完，才自热来伺候。」须臾饭毕，收拾了钵盂，辞了土地、山神，那师父才攀鞍上马，过了高山。正是：
涤虑洗心皈正觉，餐风宿水向西行。
The four of them shared out the rice, which was steaming hot. Pilgrim said, “This rice was fetched a long time ago. How is it still hot?” The Earth God knelt and said, “This small god knew the Great Sage’s task was done, so I have just warmed it to serve you.” Soon they finished eating, put away the bowl and took leave of the Earth God and the Mountain God. Only then did their master take hold of the saddle and mount his horse, and they crossed the high mountain. Truly:
Cleansing thought and washing the heart, they take refuge in true awakening;dining on wind and lodging by water, they journey west.
