Now, the Bull Demon King caught up with the Great Sage Sun and saw him walking along in high spirits, the plantain-leaf fan slung over his shoulder. The demon king was startled. “So the ape has wheedled the instructions for using it out of her too!” he thought. “If I ask him for it outright, he certainly won’t give it back. And if he waves it at me and sends me a hundred and eight thousand li away, won’t that suit him perfectly? I hear the Tang Monk is waiting on the main road. His second disciple is a pig spirit, and his third a spirit from Flowing-Sand River. I met them both back when I was a practising demon. I’ll change into the pig spirit and give him a taste of his own trickery. The ape must be so pleased with his success that he won’t look too closely.” Fine demon king! He too possessed the seventy-two transformations, and his fighting skills equalled the Great Sage’s. Only his body was rather lumbering: he lacked something of the other’s quickness and agility. He hid his precious swords, recited a spell and shook himself, taking on Bajie’s very face. Then he took a shortcut, came to meet the Great Sage and called, “Elder Brother, here I am!”
The Great Sage was indeed delighted. As the old saying goes, “A victorious cat is as merry as a tiger.” Relying on his own prowess, he gave no thought to what the newcomer might intend. Seeing Bajie’s likeness, he called, “Brother, where are you off to?” The Bull Demon King picked up his cue. “Master saw you’d been gone so long and was afraid the Bull Demon King was too powerful for you to beat, and that you couldn’t get his treasure. He sent me to meet you.” Pilgrim laughed. “No need to trouble yourself. I’ve got it already.” The Bull King asked, “How did you get it?” Pilgrim said, “That old bull and I fought a hundred rounds and more, with neither of us winning. Then he left me and went to drink with a crowd of flood-dragon and dragon spirits at the bottom of Jade Wave Pool on Tumbled Rock Mountain. I followed him in secret, changed into a crab and stole the water-parting golden-eyed beast he rides. Then I took on the old bull’s likeness and went straight to Plantain Cave to fool Rakshasi. The woman played at being husband and wife with Old Sun. Old Sun devised the trick and got the fan.” The Bull King said, “You’ve had a hard time of it! Elder Brother has worked far too hard. Let me carry the fan.” The Great Sage Sun had no idea this was a fake, nor did such a thought occur to him. He handed over the fan.

The Bull King knew the secret of making the fan grow and shrink. Once he had it, he formed some hand sign or other, reduced it to the size of an apricot leaf again and resumed his own likeness. “You wretched ape!” he cursed. “Do you recognize me?” At the sight, Pilgrim bitterly reproached himself. “That was my own fault!” He groaned, stamped his foot and cried, “Ha! I’ve hunted geese year after year, and today a gosling has pecked out my eyes!” Furious as thunder, he drew his iron cudgel and struck at the other’s head. The demon king waved the fan at him. Now, when the Great Sage had earlier changed into a tiny insect and entered Rakshasi’s belly, he had held the wind-calming pill in his mouth and swallowed it without noticing. Thus all five organs were secure, his skin and bones firm. However the Bull King fanned, he could no longer shift him at all. Alarmed, the Bull King tossed the treasure into his mouth and swung his swords with both hands. What a battle the two fought in midair:
The Great Sage Sun, equal to Heaven, the reckless Bull King who confounds the world: for a plantain-leaf fan they meet, each showing off his strength. The careless Great Sage tricked the woman;the bold Bull King tricked him out of the fan. This oneraises his gold-banded cudgel, caring nothing for old ties; That onewisely wields his sharp, double-edged blades. The Great Sage shows his might and sprays bright mist;the Bull King runs wild and spits out rays of light. Both contend in courage, neither kindly, gritting teeth and grinding jaws in wrath.Earth scatters, dust flies, Heaven and Earth grow dark;sand whirls, stones hurtle, gods and ghosts hide away. This one says, “How dare you, fool, trick me in return?”That one says, “My wife consented to keep you company.”Coarse words, reckless speech;fierce tempers, stubborn hearts. That one says, “You deserve to die for deceiving another man’s wife!Take it to court, and you’ll be punished for your crime.”The clever Sage Equal to Heaven, the savage King of Great Strength: each bent on killing, neither waiting to talk.Cudgel strikes and swords meet, each exerting all his strength;slacken for a moment, and you meet the King of the Underworld.
Let us leave the two locked in their undecided fight. Meanwhile, the Tang Monk sat by the road, tormented both by the roasting heat and by anxiety and thirst. He asked the Earth God of Flaming Mountain, “May I ask, honoured god, how great are the Bull Demon King’s magical powers?” The Earth God replied, “The Bull King’s divine abilities are formidable, his magical power boundless. He is a match for the Great Sage Sun.” Sanzang said, “Wukong knows how to travel. Usually he goes two thousand li and returns in a moment. Why has he been gone a whole day now? He must be fighting the Bull King.” He called, “Wuneng, Wujing, which of you will go to meet your elder brother? If he has encountered an enemy, lend him all your strength. Bring back the fan, ease my distress and let us cross the mountain quickly and go on our way.” Bajie said, “It’s late today. I’ve been thinking of going to meet him, but I don’t know the road to Thunder-Heap Mountain.” The Earth God said, “This humble god knows it. Let the Curtain-Raising General stay with your master, and I’ll go with you.” Sanzang was delighted. “Thank you for your trouble, honoured god. When the task is done, I shall thank you again.”
