Changgeng brings word of the demon kings’ ferocity;Pilgrim displays his powers of transformation

Feeling and desire spring from a single source;where feeling and desire dwell, they come of themselves.Monks and seekers of cultivation throng the world;cutting off desire, forgetting feeling—this is Chan.

Give it your care, keep your heart firm: not a speck of dust, the moon in the sky.

Let no wrong step mar your advancing practice;with deeds fulfilled and work complete, an immortal of great awakening.

Now, Sanzang and his disciples had torn open the net of desire and leapt out of the prison of feeling. They gave the horse its head and journeyed west. Before they had travelled long, summer was ending and autumn beginning, and a fresh coolness reached through their bodies. This is what they saw:

A sudden rain sweeps off the lingering heat;one falling wutong leaf gives warning.Fireflies flit on the sedge-lined path at dusk;crickets sing in the bright moonlight.Yellow mallows bloom against the dew;red smartweed covers sandy islets.Willows shed their leaves before the rest;autumn cicadas call in season.

As Sanzang rode on, he suddenly saw a high mountain whose peaks pierced the blue sky, brushing the stars and blocking the sun. Fear rose in the elder’s heart. He called to Wukong, “Look how high that mountain ahead of us stands. I wonder whether there’s a road through it?” Pilgrim laughed. “What are you saying, Master? As the old saying goes, ‘However high the mountain, there’s a path for travellers; however deep the water, there’s a boatman to ferry them.’ How could there be no way through? Go on with an easy mind.” At these words the elder’s face blossomed with a smile. He raised his whip, urged on the horse and headed straight up the lofty rocks.
