The Mind-Ape discovers the elixir’s source; The Maiden returns to her true nature

Now, the demon had brought Sanzang out of the cave. Sha Monk came forward and asked, “Master, you’re out, but where is Elder Brother?” Bajie said, “He has his schemes. He must have traded places with Master to get him out.” Sanzang pointed at the demon. “Your elder brother is in her belly.” Bajie laughed. “Filthy enough to kill a man! What are you doing in her belly? Come out!” Pilgrim called from inside, “Open your mouth and let me out.” The demon did open her mouth. Pilgrim shrank to a tiny size and crouched inside her throat. Just as he was about to emerge, he feared she might take it into her head to bite him. He drew out his iron cudgel, blew a breath of immortal air over it and cried, “Change!” It became a spike shaped like a jujube stone, which he propped against the roof of her mouth. He sprang out through her lips, taking the cudgel with him, bent at the waist and resumed his true form. He raised his cudgel to strike; the demon drew her two precious swords and parried with a clang. What a fine battle the two fought on the mountaintop:

Twin swords fly in a dancing parry;the gold-banded cudgel rises to strike her head. One is a heaven-born monkey, the Mind-Ape in the flesh;one an earth-born spirit, the Maiden in bodily form.Hatred fills their breasts; pleasure breeds enmity, and they clash in mighty battle. She would take primal yang and win a mate;he would battle pure yin and form the sacred embryo. The raised cudgel fills the sky with chilly mist;the meeting swords sift black dust over all the ground. For the elder’s journey to worship the Buddha, they contend in bitter hatred and display their mighty gifts.Water and fire will not accord, and the Mother’s Way is harmed;yin and yang cannot unite, and each goes a separate way.Long have the two fought;the earth moves, the mountain shakes, and trees are shattered.

Watching them fight, Bajie muttered and grumbled, blaming Pilgrim instead. He turned to Sha Monk. “Brother, Elder Brother’s making a mess of this. Just now he was in her belly. Why didn’t he swing his fists, turn her insides blood-red, tear her belly open and crawl out? That would have settled it! Why come out through her mouth and fight her, letting her carry on like this?” Sha Monk said, “That’s true. Still, it was thanks to Elder Brother that Master was rescued from deep inside the cave, and now he’s fighting the demon again. Let’s ask Master to sit here by himself. You and I can take our weapons, help Elder Brother and knock the demon down.” Bajie waved his hands. “No, no, no! He has magic powers. We’re no use.” Sha Monk said, “What are you talking about? It’s something that benefits us all. Even if we’re no use, even a fart adds to the wind.”

The Idiot suddenly warmed to the idea, drew his rake and called, “Let’s go!” Forgetting their master, the two rode the wind after the combatants and laid into the demon with rake and precious staff. She could barely hold her own against Pilgrim alone. How could she withstand the other two as well? She turned quickly and fled. Pilgrim shouted, “Brothers, after her!” Seeing them close behind, the demon took the embroidered shoe off her right foot, blew a breath of immortal air over it, recited a spell and cried, “Change!” At once it took her own shape and came at them with two whirling swords. She shook herself into a clear breeze and went straight back. You might think she had only fled to save her life because she could not beat them—but who could have guessed what happened next? Sanzang’s baleful star had not yet departed. When she reached the ornamental gateway at the cave entrance, she saw the Tang Monk sitting there alone. She went up, caught him in her arms, seized the baggage and bit through the reins. Once more she carried both man and horse inside by magic, but let us leave that for now.

Meanwhile Bajie found an opening and knocked the demon to the ground with one blow of his rake. It was only an embroidered shoe. Pilgrim saw it and said, “You two idiots! All you had to do was watch Master. Who asked you to come and help?” Bajie said, “Sha Monk, what did I tell you? I said not to come. This monkey must have something wrong with his head. We subdue the demon for him, and all we get is his complaints!” Pilgrim said, “Where have you subdued a demon? Yesterday, when she fought me, she fooled me with this same trick of leaving a shoe behind. With you two gone, who knows what’s happened to Master? Let’s hurry back and look.”
