Chapter Ninety-One · Investiture of the Gods

Wu Wenhua is burned at Coiled Dragon Ridge

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: outside the palisaded gate of the Zhou camp, the giant Wu Wenhua, bent over, strains to pull his nail-studded club out of the ground, while the small, wild-haired Longxuhu, a bag of stones at his waist, darts in at his leg and strikes it with a stone.

詩曰:

力大排山氣吐虹,手拖扒木快如風。行舟陸地誰堪及,破敵營門孰敢同。

A poem says:

His strength could shove mountains aside, his breath spat rainbows;he dragged his rake-beam, swift as the wind.Pushing boats over dry land — who could match him?Smashing through an enemy’s camp gate — who dared equal him?

Now, Ziya was working his magic on the commander’s platform. Wind and cloud rose on every side and black fog spread everywhere; above was the snare of Heaven, below the net of earth; heaven darkened and earth grew dismal, and the Zhou camp was shrouded. Thunderclaps crashed one on another, lightning raced, firelight blazed, a chill air struck to the bone; the thunder rolled without stopping and the shouting rose mightily. In every camp drums and horns sounded together, as if heaven were falling and the earth caving in. How so? There is a poem to prove it. It says:
