Chapter Ninety-Two · Investiture of the Gods

Yang Jian and Nezha subdue the seven monsters

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a rocky mountain path under old pines, the warrior Yang Jian kneels with his hands on the ground and looks up, his three-pronged spear lying beside him, while the goddess Nüwa, in a phoenix crown and holding a scroll, descends on a great bird among clouds with two attendant girls bearing a long banner and a round fan, and three small monkeys, one with a stick, peer out from behind the rocks.

A poem says:

The Seven Monsters of Mount Mei stood in the way of the Zhou, flaunting their strange powers in bitter battle.Fierce as the dog’s bezoar was, who would die alone?Vicious as the ox’s bezoar was, it brought its owner to his own end.

Zhu Zhen knelt on the ground and was the first to lose his head;Yang Xian ran wild, and after him he too perished. How laughable the white ape, who stirred up so much troubleand threw away a thousand years of the Way as if it were nothing!

Now, Wu Ji and Nangong Kuo saw Ziya leading Wu Wenhua into the hills. They let Ziya and King Wu pass first, then blocked the front of the hills with logs and stones. Wu Wenhua came charging into the mouth of the valley, but Ziya and King Wu had vanished. He stopped short and looked about him, hesitating; there was no trace of them anywhere. He was just about to turn round and leave the hills when cannon roared on both sides and battle cries shook the ground. From the slopes, rolling logs and great boulders blocked the mouth of the valley, and the soldiers hurled down fire-bows, fire-arrows, fire-cannon, dry firewood and the like. Fires sprang up on every side, and smoke filled the whole valley. How fierce was the fire? A verse of praise says:
