Chapter Twenty-Four · The Story of Han Xiangzi

Back in his old home, Han Xiang reveals his powers;Shooting the parrot, Lady Dou clings to her delusion

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in an autumn courtyard with potted chrysanthemums, a young Daoist with a drum under his arm and a gourd and flower basket at his waist reaches up toward a white parrot circling overhead, a manservant draws a bow at the bird, and an elderly lady seated on the veranda points at it with her daughter-in-law standing behind her chair.

Vast and boundless, the sea of bitterness;fearsome, the wind and the waves.Reckon it up: it is all greed and anger casting their nets, lust and venom spreading their snares.

In the round hut, when the third watch of the night came, a gust of clear wind blew in, and Xiangzi was gone. Now where, you may wonder, reader, did Xiangzi go at such an hour? He had gone to see Master Zhongli, and together they went to attend the Jade Emperor’s court, where Xiangzi reported: “My uncle Han Yu, through the favour of Your mysterious workings, has turned his heart. But my aunt, Lady Dou, and Luying of the Lin family still cling to their delusion and will not wake, and it is hard to deliver and enlighten them. I humbly await Your Majesty’s sacred decision.” The Golden Boy conveyed the decree: “Lady Dou was once the Holy Mother of the upper realm. Because she plucked a hollyhock without leave at the Peach Banquet, she was banished to the mortal world to suffer. Luying was once a jade maiden of the Hall of Divine Mists. When the Dark Emperor sent out the heavenly generals to subdue the demons, the gates of Heaven were left open, and Luying peeped down. For this she was banished to the mortal world, to sleep alone and lie alone as a warning against longing for the world of men. Han Xiang may go with Lü Yan and Lan Caihe to bring them to the Way once more, so that together they may attain the true fruit.” Xiangzi could only give thanks, and then he went to pay his respects to the Queen Mother of the West. “How happy it is that Chonghezi has woken to the causes of his former life,” said the Queen Mother. “The day of his return to his place is not far off. But the Holy Mother and the jade maiden are still lost on the road of delusion. Who will go again to bring them to the Way?” “The Jade Emperor has sent your servant Han Xiangzi, with Lü Yan and Lan Caihe, to bring them to the Way,” said Xiangzi. “I hope Your Majesty will instruct me.” “Those two have long been sunk in the dusty world,” said the Queen Mother, “with their hearts set on glory, riches and rank. Han Xiang, you must go to the Bodhisattva Guanyin on Mount Potalaka and borrow some immortal thing to work your transformations with. Only then will you be able to move them.” “The Bodhisattva Guanyin is revered by the Buddhists,” said Xiangzi, “and her ways don’t agree with ours of the Mysterious Gate. Why would she lend an immortal thing to us?” “Guanyin is the venerable one who sets the world in order,” said the Queen Mother, “the ancestor of all who save others. Why would she draw a line between ‘them’ and ‘us’?” “I respectfully obey your immortal command,” said Xiangzi. He took his leave of the Queen Mother of the West and went out of the Jasper Terrace and the Purple Palace, and the three of them rode the clouds to the Southern Sea, saw Guanyin, borrowed the parrot and set off back toward Chang’an.
