Chapter Twenty-Five · The Story of Han Xiangzi

Lü Chunyang sends a dream to the Cui household;Second Aunt Zhang proposes a match at the Han mansion

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a hall, an angry elderly lady stands over a board-game table and points sharply at two matchmakers, one stout with a large flower in her hair, who shrink back with open mouths, while a young woman seated at the table holds a game piece and turns to look.

世事紛如夢,黃粱夢未醒。

世事纷如梦,黄粱梦未醒。

The affairs of the world are as tangled as a dream, and still we have not woken from the yellow millet dream.

夢中先說夢,夢醒總非真。

梦中先说梦,梦醒总非真。

Inside the dream we tell each other of dreams;once the dream is over, none of it was ever real.

有夢還歸夢,有因夢不成。

有梦还归梦,有因梦不成。

Some dreams go back to being dreams again;some have a cause, and still the dream comes to nothing.
