Now, Huang Yi went into the room with the neighbours and looked. There was Madam Wu, nailed up on the wall: a great nail through the palm of each hand, great nails through her legs, her belly slit open and her guts and tripes spilled all over the floor. Madam Wu had been six months with child, and someone had taken the unborn child away. At the sight, Huang Yi hurried to the yamen of Jiangyin County and cried out for justice. His Honour, whose surname was Gao, opened court at once, had Huang Yi brought up into the hall and questioned him. “May it please Your Honour,” said Huang Yi, “my elder brother Huang Ren went out on a case at Your Honour’s orders and asked me to look after my sister-in-law, Madam Wu. Yesterday I took her two strings of cash, and today my sister-in-law has been nailed to the wall and cut open. I don’t know who killed her. I beg Your Honour to catch the murderer.” The magistrate went out to examine the body, and the midwife said, “Someone has stolen the unborn child, the purple river cart.” His Honour was at a loss over this case: there was nowhere to go looking for the murderer. A few days later Huang Ren came home. When he heard his wife had been murdered, Huang Ren put in a further complaint: “Huang Yi and I have never got on. This must be Huang Yi’s doing.” His Honour sent for Huang Yi. “Your brother says you did it,” he said. “While your brother was away, how many times did you go there? Tell me exactly how it went, and tell the truth.” “May it please Your Honour,” said Huang Yi, “the day after my brother left, I took the two strings of cash over, and there was a Daoist nun of twenty-odd at my sister-in-law’s house. I told my sister-in-law she shouldn’t let the three aunts and six grannies into the house. My sister-in-law didn’t like it, so I went back to my shop, but I felt uneasy. The next day I went again and couldn’t get anyone to open the door. When we went in, she’d been murdered.” When His Honour heard there had been a Daoist nun at the house, it all came clear to him. A couple of days before, there had been a case at Shili Village outside the West Gate. A husband and wife lived there together, the man away trading and the woman at home. One day the woman took in a Daoist nun, who stayed the night, and the next day the woman was found cut open; she too had been with child. The neighbours on either side had all seen her take in a Daoist nun. The next day she was dead, and the nun was gone. The case had been reported to the court, and the murderer had not yet been caught. And now here was a Daoist nun again.

His Honour at once sent mounted constables out to hunt for the Daoist nun, and the two head constables had gone out with his orders from the bench to track her down. That was why, when they saw the monk holding on to the Daoist nun, they came over and chained her. Even if the monk hadn’t been holding her and talking of going to law, the constables would have chained the nun all the same. The two head constables, one surnamed Li and the other Chen, chained the Daoist nun and hauled her off toward the yamen, and the monk came along with them to the Jiangyin County yamen. The constables went in and reported to His Honour: “A poor monk had hold of a Daoist nun, and your humble servants have brought the nun in chains.” At this His Honour’s heart stirred. He at once called for the court to be made ready, took his seat and had the monk and the nun brought in. When the monk came up into the great hall, His Honour took one look, hurriedly left his seat and said, “So the holy monk has graced us with his presence!” He stepped forward and bowed. The runners all stared. “How come our master is bowing to a poor monk?” they said.

A word of explanation: this magistrate was none other than Gao Guotai. In the first part of The Tale of Ji Gong, Ji Gong had saved Gao Guotai and Li Siming in Yuhang County. Later Gao Guotai studied in Liang Wancang’s house, passed one examination after another, and was appointed a county magistrate straight from the list. That was why, seeing Ji Gong today, he hurried to bow to the monk and told his men to bring a seat. The monk sat down to one side. “Holy monk,” said Gao Guotai, “why were you holding on to the Daoist nun?” “I dropped fifty taels of silver on the ground,” said the monk, “and the nun picked them up and won’t give them back. I grabbed hold of her and asked for them, and she wouldn’t give them, so I want to take her to law.” At this the magistrate ordered the Daoist nun brought up. The runners at once brought her into the hall, and the nun knelt. “Where are you from?” said the magistrate. “What is your surname? What is your name?” “This humble Daoist is from Yangzhou Prefecture,” said the nun. “My surname is Zhi, and my name is Zhi Yitang. I left home for the religious life as a child, and I travel about seeking the Way.” “Why have you kept back the holy monk’s silver?” said Gao Guotai. “I don’t even know him,” said the nun. “The monk is talking nonsense.” “Your Honour, have someone search her,” said the monk. His Honour at once sent for an official matchmaker to search her there in the hall, and there was nothing on the nun’s upper body. “You’re searching the wrong end,” said the monk. The matchmaker searched the nun’s lower body and brought out a bundle. “May it please Your Honour,” she said, “this isn’t a Daoist nun. It’s a man.”
