Chapter One Hundred and Eighty-One · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

The Drunken Chan Master names and inscribes the Shrine of Loyalty and Righteousness; The false Daoist nun drugs her victims and steals the unborn

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: before a village temple, a ragged monk bends over a long blank board laid across two benches and brushes it, one foot planted wide, as an old villager holds an inkstone, two other villagers lean in to watch, and blank paper strips lie on a small table at the right.

Now, Dou Yongheng and Zhou Kun came down the mountain fuming. But one look, and the two of them leapt from their horses and stepped forward to pay their respects. Who was it at the foot of the mountain? None other than Chan Master Ji Gong. The pair came up and bowed. “So it’s you, holy monk!” they said. “Where have you come from, Master?” “From Lin’an,” said the monk. “I’m on my way to Jiangyin County.” “Master,” said Dou Yongheng, “come on up the mountain!” “I won’t come up,” said the monk. “So you two are playing robber kings on this mountain, are you?” “The two of us had nowhere to turn,” said Dou Yongheng, “so we’ve borrowed the mountain to shelter on for now.” “Dou Yongheng, lend me your ear,” said the monk. “Thus and so, and so and thus.” Dou Yongheng nodded and agreed. “Master,” he said, “take a little money for the road.” “I don’t want it,” said the monk. “I’ve got money to spend. I’ll be off now.” He said his goodbyes and went on his way. One day he came into the territory of Jiangyin County and saw a village ahead, with a great crowd gathered outside the village entrance. He had barely come near when someone in the crowd said, “Here’s a monk. Let’s ask the monk’s advice. Reverend Master, come over here, please!” “What’s the matter, everyone?” said the monk. One of them said, “This village of ours has seventy or eighty households and three or four generations, and not one soul among us can read. We couldn’t tell you the simplest character, any of us.” “It’s a real strange business,” said the crowd. “Maybe something’s wrong with this village of ours. We got a feng shui master to look the place over, and he said it was because we didn’t worship the sages of letters and arms. Worship them, he said, and learning would take root here. So the village talked it over and built a temple. But whose is it — Master Guan’s? Sage Kong’s? That’s what’s got us all stuck. If we want to call it Lord Guan’s Temple, there’s Sage Kong in it too; if we just call it the Sage’s Temple, there’s Master Guan as well. We can’t come up with a name for the board. Monk, you give it a name. You’re bound to be up to it.” “If I’m to name it,” said the monk, “call it the Shrine of Loyalty and Righteousness.” When the crowd heard that they said, “Good! Leave it to a monk to be clever. You can write, so would you write the board for us too?” “All right,” said the monk. At once they fetched a brush, and the monk wrote. When he had finished the board for the Shrine of Loyalty and Righteousness, the crowd said, “Master, write us a couplet.” “Certainly,” said the monk. He took up the brush and dashed it off in one sweep. The first line read:

“Master Kong, Master Guan: two Masters.”

The second line read:

“Wrote the Annals, read the Annals: one Annals.”

The crowd looked: the brushwork was very fine, and the words were apt and well turned. Not one of them failed to join in the praise. “Reverend Master,” they said, “we beg you to write a couplet for the temple gate too.” The monk took up the brush and wrote, and on the gate he wrote:

“Though heaven’s rain falls far and wide,it cannot water grass without roots;though the Buddha’s gate stands open wide,it cannot save a man who will not do good.”

When the monk had finished writing, the crowd said, “A Reverend Master who writes as well as this — how did you end up so poor and wretched? And so filthy?” “Don’t ask, all of you,” said the monk. “It was my wife who drove me to it.” “How did your wife drive you to it?” asked the crowd. “I married a wife,” said the monk, “and before ten days were out she ran off with another man. I hunted for half a year and brought her back.” “Then you should have been done with her,” said the crowd. “But I took her back,” said the monk. “She lived at home with me a month and more, and she was forever having monks and Daoists running in and out of the house. Seeing how she loved monks, I lost my temper and became a monk myself. Then my wife ran off with a Daoist, and I’m so furious I’ve been looking for her everywhere. When I find her I won’t let her off, not for anything.” “Since your wife has run off,” said the crowd, “you needn’t look for her any more. You’ve already left the household life, so just stay on here at our Shrine of Loyalty and Righteousness. We’ll put together a few dozen mu of endowment land for you, and you’ll always have enough to eat. You can teach in the temple — we’ll round up a few pupils for you — and see to your own devotions. How about it?” “No,” said the monk, “I’ve got to find her.” As he spoke, the monk raised his head. “Well, what do you know,” he said. “Here comes my wife!” The crowd looked up and saw a Daoist nun coming toward them from across the way. Her face was fair as a hibiscus flower, her cheeks like peach blossom, and she had a small bundle in her hand.

The monk went over and seized the Daoist nun with one hand. “You fine piece of work!” he said. “You ran off with a Daoist and turned Daoist nun, did you? I married you, and you wouldn’t keep house with me. All these days I’ve been hunting for you, and today I’ve run into you at last.” “Oh my!” said the nun. “All of you, quick, talk some sense into him! I’ve been a nun since I was a little girl, and I’ve never had a husband. This monk is a madman. Everything out of his mouth is nonsense.” The crowd hurried over to make peace. “Tell us, then, what’s this all about?” “She’s my wife,” said the monk. “She ran off with a Daoist and became a Daoist nun.” “All of you, listen,” said the nun. “Where is the monk’s accent from? And where is mine from? The monk is a madman.” The crowd came over and said, “Monk, let go of her. Let her go.” “No,” said the monk. It was all the crowd could do to pull the monk off her, and the nun went on her way. “You lot have let my wife get away from me,” said the monk. “Now you’ll have to pay me for a wife.”
