Chapter Two Hundred and Seven · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

The Flying Ghost strays by chance onto Mount Wanhua;Shi Chengrui marries into the house of the Human Demon’s daughter

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a mountain orchard of huge fruit, a young woman reaches up on tiptoe to pluck a giant apple into the basket on her arm, while a travel-worn young swordsman crouches half hidden behind a thick tree trunk, watching her.

Now, Han Qi, the Divine Magician, had caught the monk Jinfeng with the Mother-and-Child Soul Cord and was just about to put an end to him, when a young gentleman of martial training came down from the hillside.

A word of explanation: the man who had come was the son-in-law of Wang Jiufeng, the Woodcutter of Guilin, the Human Demon. His surname was Shi and his given name Chengrui, and people called him the Flying Ghost. He came from Zhenjiang, and he too was one of the Thirty-Six Heroes of Yushan County. He had mastered the fighting arts in full — long-range boxing and close-in fighting, saber, spear, staff and cudgel, he was expert in every one — and he could leap onto eaves and run along walls. He was born with a love of roaming the mountains and taking in the sights: wherever there was a famous mountain or a fine view, he simply had to go and see it up close.

One day he took some dry rations and went off to roam the mountains. He saw mountain joined to mountain, mountain folded within mountain, stretching on who knew how far. Shi Chengrui thought to himself, “I’d like to find out where this range comes to an end.” He was quick on his feet, and he walked on for more than ten days, and still he was in the midst of a tangle of mountains: great peaks looking down on small ones, the ridges ahead joined high to the ridges behind. The food he had brought was all eaten, but he still had his heart set on finding out whether these mountains had an end. With nothing to eat, he lived in the mountains on fruit and roots; whenever he saw fruit, he ate fruit.
