Chapter Two Hundred and Eight · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Homesick, husband and wife speak from the heart; With a clever spell, a wife makes sport of her bedfellow

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a walled garden, a young woman with a brush in one hand points at a painted dragon whose head and claws surge out of the whitewashed wall, while a young man in a swordsman's cloak steps back with a hand raised in surprise.

Now, Shi Chengrui had wanted to go and stroll about the Sea Market and the Mirage Towers. He came into the garden and leapt up onto the boundary wall, but when he looked out there was no bustling street at all, only wild hills and empty ridges. He thought to himself, “Now this is strange. I’ll go up to the upper storey again, open the window and have a look.” With that he jumped back down, went upstairs, opened the window and looked: still wild hills and empty ridges, and not a soul in sight. He stood there dumbfounded a long while, and with nothing else for it he came back to his own room. “Where did you go, Consort?” asked Miss Yinping. “I went up to the upper storey to stroll about the Sea Market and the Mirage Towers,” said Shi Chengrui, “but the whole thing was gone. And I wanted to hear yesterday’s opera again.” “That’s easy,” said Miss Yinping. “We have opera right here at home. Come with me and listen.” “I don’t believe it,” said Shi Chengrui. He followed her straight to the garden, and all at once, over there, gongs and drums shook the sky and an opera was under way. Still, Shi Chengrui never stopped thinking of his home and native soil. Miss Yinping coaxed him every way she could: whatever Shi Chengrui wanted to eat, there it was; however he wanted things, so they were. Shi Chengrui thought, “Whatever I want, she has. I’m going to stump her.” One day Shi Chengrui said, “There’s something I’ve a craving to eat.” “Name it,” said Yinping. “Whatever it is, I’ll have it ready for you.” “You won’t have it here,” said Shi Chengrui. “You can only get it back in my own part of the country. Zhejiang has a fish called the shad, the finest-tasting thing there is, and you won’t find it anywhere else.” “That’s easy,” said Miss Yinping. “There’s some right in Yueya Brook in our garden.” “Now you’re talking nonsense,” said Shi Chengrui. “You’ll never find that anywhere else.” “If you don’t believe me, come with me,” said Yinping. “I’ll catch one, and you can see whether it’s the real thing.” “Let’s go,” said Shi Chengrui. The two of them came to the garden. Yinping tied a line with a fishhook to a bamboo pole and let it down, and before long she pulled up a fish. Shi Chengrui looked: it really was a shad. He thought, “This is strange indeed. Well, she has the fish, but they probably don’t have purple-tipped ginger here. Shad has to be cooked with purple-tipped ginger; with any other ginger it doesn’t come out fresh.” So he said, “My dear, back home we cook shad with one special kind of ginger for seasoning, purple-tipped ginger, and it makes it wonderfully fresh. Where would you find purple-tipped ginger here?” “We have it,” said Yinping. “There’s purple-tipped ginger growing in this flowerpot, just for cooking shad.” She reached in and dug, and sure enough she dug up purple-tipped ginger. Shi Chengrui was baffled. He had the cook prepare the fish, and it really was delicious. “My dear,” said Shi Chengrui, “I hear that of the eight delicacies of mountain and sea, dragon liver, phoenix marrow, leopard foetus and bear’s paw are the best of all. Suppose I want to eat dragon liver. Can you manage that?” “I can,” said Yinping. At once she took a brush and drew a dragon on the whitewashed wall. “That’s only a picture,” said Shi Chengrui. “You can’t eat it.” Miss Yinping muttered a spell and pointed at it, and the dragon came alive, baring its fangs and brandishing its claws, ready to make off. Miss Yinping stepped up and with one stroke of her sword split the dragon open, took out its liver and had it cooked for Shi Chengrui to eat. She coaxed him every way she could, yet Shi Chengrui was never happy. “Consort,” said Miss Yinping, “why are you always so unhappy?” “I’ll tell you the truth,” said Shi Chengrui. “I miss my home. I still have my old mother there, and my first wife, and I’ve had no word of them all this time. Listening to The Fourth Son Visits His Mother and Qiu Hu Teases His Wife, I thought: other men go far from home and they all get a day to go back. Why can’t I? My heart is never at ease. I don’t even know whether my old mother and my wife are alive or dead.” “If you want to go back, you can,” said Miss Yinping. “Suppose I send you back. How would that be?”

Shi Chengrui brightened at once. “If you can get me home,” he said, “I’ll go and see how things are at the house, and then I’ll come back with my mind at rest.” “In that case,” said Yinping, “I’ll send you off. Close your eyes, and mind you don’t open them. When you can’t hear the wind any more, open your eyes, and you’ll be home.” “Right,” said Shi Chengrui. At once he shut his eyes, and in his ears he heard the wind go whoosh, whoosh. At long last the sound of the wind stopped. He opened his eyes and looked, and he was already in his own village, not far from his own gate. Shi Chengrui was overjoyed and hurried on. He came to the gate and knocked, and out came his wife. She opened the gate, looked at him and said, “You’re back? Mother has been worried sick.” When Shi Chengrui saw the wife he had married in his youth, he could not help feeling a pang. “Is Mother well?” he asked. “She’s well,” said his wife, Madam Liu. Shi Chengrui went straight inside and saw his old mother sitting in her room, looking no older than before. He hurried forward to pay his respects and said, “Mother, are you well?” The old lady looked at him and said, “My son! You’re back.” “Husband,” said Madam Liu, “where have you been these two years? Why did you never come back? You had the whole family worried.” “Ah! Don’t ask,” said Shi Chengrui. “It’s a long story. It all came from my love of roaming the hills and taking in the scenery: I got myself into trouble. I lost my way in the mountains, my food ran out, and then I fell ill. My limbs had no strength and I could barely walk. I thought I was going to die in the mountains and never get back. Then I saw a lot of fruit trees. I picked a fruit and ate it, and at once I seemed to feel clear-headed and refreshed. Then all of a sudden I met a young woman, and my head went all muddled, and she took me to Mount Yinmo. There was a Demon Master there called Wang Jiufeng, the Woodcutter of Guilin, and he said that his daughter, Miss Yinping, and I were bound by an immortal fate, so I married into the family. Food and clothes, I had everything I could wish for, whatever I asked for was there; we got along well as husband and wife, and she treated me well enough. But as the days went by I kept thinking: I’ve got my old mother at home, and you and I married in our youth. How could I forget that? Only I couldn’t get back on my own. It’s thanks to that wife of mine that I’m here: she sent me home with her magic. When I opened my eyes I was already close to home, and that’s how I came back.” “So you went and took another wife out there,” said his wife. “And now do you mean to go back to her or not?” “I don’t think I’ll go back,” said Shi Chengrui. “Besides, even if I wanted to, I don’t know the way.” “She treats you so well,” said his wife. “One day as husband and wife means a hundred days of devotion. Why wouldn’t you go back?” “I’m not going back,” said Shi Chengrui. “You really won’t go back?” said his wife. “Really,” said Shi Chengrui. His wife burst out laughing. Shi Chengrui looked again: this was not his home at all. He was still in Miss Yinping’s room. His old mother had vanished, his wife Madam Liu had vanished, and everything that had been said had been said by Miss Yinping. Shi Chengrui was dumbfounded: he had never even left the room. “If I really sent you home,” said Miss Yinping, “once you got there you’d never come back.” “Why did you fool me?” said Shi Chengrui. “Because I wanted to test your heart,” said Miss Yinping. “My dear, there was no need for you to test me,” said Shi Chengrui. “If I really go back, then once I’m home, even if I want to come back I won’t be able to. How could I ever find my way back here?” “If you mean to go back, I really will send you,” said Miss Yinping. “I’ll teach you a little magic, and I’ll give you this handkerchief. Whenever you want to come back, or whenever you’re in trouble, take out the handkerchief, shut both eyes and stamp both feet, and you’ll be able to come back.”

Miss Yinping taught Shi Chengrui to ride the foot-wind, the great Five-Elements art of shifting and transport, and a body-guarding spell, and Shi Chengrui learned all these arts. The day came when Shi Chengrui was to leave. Miss Yinping, her eyes brimming with tears, said, “Consort, I’ll send you off, but don’t you forget me.” “Set your mind at ease, my dear,” said Shi Chengrui. “I would never be so utterly heartless. One day as husband and wife means a hundred days of devotion; how could I cut off all feeling for you? As long as I’m able to come back, whenever I think of you, I’ll come back. Only don’t fool me this time.” “I won’t fool you,” said Miss Yinping. “Close your eyes.” Shi Chengrui did close his eyes, and in his ears he heard only the sound of the wind; his body seemed to float and drift along as though riding a cloud. When the wind stopped, Miss Yinping said, “Open your eyes!” Shi Chengrui opened his eyes, and he was already in Zhejiang.
