Chapter Two Hundred and Twenty-One · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Shen Miaoliang saves Wuchan by a clever ruse;Changzhou Prefecture sends the wicked Daoist to execution

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on open ground outside a city wall, a prefect sits at a desk under a matshed, a ragged monk steps out with palms pressed together and a stiff grin, and two white-haired old Daoists in patterned robes approach side by side, the leading one pointing at him.

Now, Chan Master Ji Gong had heard that Wuchan had burned down Shengjiao Hall, and this Lord Arhat, who knew things before they came to pass, said, “Wuchan, you’ve brought a calamity of demon fire down on me. Still, that too is fated by Heaven. Wuchan, go, and be quick about it. If you won’t listen to me this time, you are no disciple of mine.” Hearing this, Wuchan could do nothing. Not daring to go against his master, he took his leave and went off back to Songquan Temple on Mount Jiusong. Only then did the prefect, Gu Guozhang, send word for the court to be made ready. The three squads of guards, constables and runners raised the court cry, and Gu Guozhang took his seat on the bench and ordered Shao Huafeng brought before the court. Shao Huafeng was brought into the hall at once. By now Shao Huafeng was wretched at heart, but it was too late for regrets. The prefect banged down the sounding block. “Shao Huafeng,” he said, “here in my own jurisdiction you gathered a gang of bandits, sent men out to ravish women, did harm to the common people, resisted arrest by the soldiers and led your gang to storm the jail. Confess the whole truth of what you have done, and spare your skin and flesh the pain.” Things having come to this, Shao Huafeng thought it over: refusing to confess would get him nowhere, so he had better tell the truth and be spared the harsh tortures. “No need for anger, Your Honour,” he said. “I’ll confess. I only beg Your Honour, of your mercy, to let me die quickly.” The prefect had the record clerk write out Shao Huafeng’s confession, and Shao Huafeng put his mark to it there in court. Gu Guozhang ordered Shao Huafeng put in irons and thrown into jail. Only then did he leave the court, and he sat drinking with Ji Gong in his study.

Early the next morning the prefect sent a dispatch to his superiors, and that evening their order came down: Shao Huafeng was to be put to death by slicing, on the spot. “Holy monk, don’t leave just yet,” said the prefect. “Tomorrow Shao Huafeng is to be executed outside the West Gate. I beg you, holy monk, to guard the execution. I’m afraid the bandit may have confederates still at large who will raid the execution ground.” “Very well,” said the monk. The next day the prefect called out two hundred officers and men of the city garrison to escort the prisoner, and invited Ji Gong to come along as they took Shao Huafeng out. They hurried to the execution ground outside the West Gate. There, on the north side, an execution stand had been put up with a desk set out in it, and the prefect sat in the stand with Ji Gong. The crowd of onlookers was packed too tight to move. They were just about to start slicing Shao Huafeng when two men came from due south. The monk took one look and said, “Oh no! Here come my enemies!” The prefect was badly startled, thinking someone had come to raid the execution ground. He looked up and saw the two newcomers. The one in front wore a four-cornered cap of green twill silk and a loose green damask cloak embroidered all over with roundels of flowers, with white socks and cloud-patterned shoes. His face was like an autumn moon, his hair like the snow of deep winter, his beard like the frost of late autumn: a full silver beard below his chin.

Close behind him came another man in a long blue gown, dressed in the same style. The newcomers were none other than Yang Mingyuan, the Old Angler of the Milky Way, in front, and Wang Jiufeng, the Woodcutter of Guilin, behind.
