Chapter Two Hundred and Twenty-Two · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

At Jinshan Temple, Yongshou works his demon arts;Out of pique, Little Kunlun sets him on Ji Gong

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a temple hall before a seated Buddha, a gigantic black-faced monk sits cross-legged on the offering table laughing and pointing, a Daoist with a whisk strokes his beard and points away into the distance, and an old monk at the left holds a hand to his ear.

Now, when Little Kunlun, Guo Shun, heard how unreasonably the monk talked, he had half a mind to turn on him. Then he thought again: “Trouble comes from opening your mouth too often; grief comes from pushing yourself forward. Why should I make an enemy of him?” With that he said, “Monk, there’s no need to lose your temper with me. This man of the mountains is only advising you for your own good. Besides, the abbot of this temple is an ordinary mortal. Why bully him? If you want to pick on a monk, pick on one worth picking on — but that monk, I’m afraid, you wouldn’t dare take on.” “Who wouldn’t I dare take on?” said the black-faced monk. “Just name him!” Guo Shun thought, “By now Ji Gong has probably gone back to his temple. I’ll send this fellow after Ji Gong. Ji Gong is sure to deal with him and make him come a cropper, and that will stop him running so wild.” With that he said, “Monk, do you dare go to Lingyin Temple on West Lake and take on Crazy Ji?” The black-faced monk gave a loud laugh. “If it’s the monk Crazy Ji you want me to go after, that’s easy.” As he spoke he gave a nod and said, “Come.” At once another black-faced monk came in from outside; there was no telling where he had come from so fast. As he came in, this monk shouted, “I am Qianzai Changxiu!” Still speaking, he came up before the Main Hall and said, “Master, where are you sending me?” “Disciple,” said Wannian Yongshou, “I’m sending you to Lingyin Temple on West Lake to seize Crazy Ji and bring him to me.” Qianzai Changxiu answered with a shout: “I obey your holy command.” At once — zip! — he gave his head a shake and was gone. Shortly he came to the gate of Lingyin Temple and strode straight in. “Who are you looking for?” said the two gate monks. “I am Qianzai Changxiu,” said the black-faced monk. The gate monks still meant to stop him, but the black-faced monk pointed a finger at them and said, “Hit!” The gate monks could not help themselves: they slapped their own faces and ran inside. Qianzai Changxiu, too, went to the Main Hall and sat himself down on the altar table. The gate monks, terrified, went in to report to Guangliang. When Guangliang heard it, he was too timid to come out, and he hurried off to report to the old monk, Abbot Yuankong. Guangliang first knelt and bowed, and said, “Venerable Abbot, a black-faced monk has turned up outside who calls himself Qianzai Changxiu. He beat the gate monks, and he’s gone up onto the altar table in the Main Hall.”

The old abbot had been a bhiksu through nine lifetimes. “What a bold wicked beast,” he said, “coming for no reason to make trouble on the good ground of the Buddha’s house! Go and tell Daoji’s disciple Wuzhen to catch him.” Guangliang at once found Sun Daoquan and told him what had happened. “I’ll go,” said Sun Daoquan. He came straight out to the Main Hall at the front and looked: sure enough, a black-faced monk was sitting on the altar table, and above his head hung a plume of black vapour. Sun Daoquan rushed forward, raised his sword and brought it down full on the monk’s neck. The monk had his eyes shut and was not on his guard, and the sword truly struck home — but the black monk only stretched out his neck, and the blade left nothing but a white mark. “You wicked beast!” said Sun Daoquan. “Coming for no reason to make trouble on the pure ground of the Buddha’s house! Get out of here!” The black-faced monk opened his mouth and blew a breath of black vapour straight at Sun Daoquan. Sun Daoquan hastily recited a body-guarding spell, turned and ran out, saying, “That’s a fierce one!” Before the words were out of his mouth, a shout came from inside the temple gate: “Limitless Buddha!” Sun Daoquan looked: it was the Divine Child, Chu Daoyuan, who said, “Bold wicked beast! Wait till this man of the mountains catches you.” He reached into his pouch, took out the Eight-Treasure Cloud-Light Immortal Bag and flung it at the demon monk; his fingers made a magic sign, his lips muttered a spell, and at once the black-faced monk was inside the bag. “Tip him out and let’s see what kind of thing he is,” said Chu Daoyuan. He poured the bag out, and everyone looked: the creature had shown its true form. It was a great alligator dragon. Chu Daoyuan looked at it and said, “You’ve really dragged the name of monk through the mud.”

A word of explanation: his master, too, was a great one of the same breed. Why, then, had he gone to make trouble at Jinshan Temple? There was a reason behind it. At the foot of the temple’s hill there had at first been no street of shops. The old abbot of Jinshan Temple thought that the temple had three hundred hall monks with nothing to do, who spent their days eating the bread of idleness, and that the daily expenses were too great. So the old abbot put up money to build houses and rent them out to people to open shops, so that those who came to burn incense and visit the temple could amuse themselves as well. He also built forty fishing boats and rented them to fishermen at one tael of silver a day. Anyone who sold fish on his hill had to pay a fish tax to the temple, so that every month a good deal more money came in. Now this Wannian Yongshou had been ordered by the Dragon King to guard the river mouth here, and day after day these fishermen had killed no small number of his children and grandchildren. That was what angered him, and that was why he came to Jinshan Temple to make war on the monks. Little did he expect that Guo Shun would goad him with a few words; that was how he came to send his disciple to make trouble at Lingyin Temple, never imagining that Chu Daoyuan would catch him in the Immortal Bag, so that when he was tipped out he had already shown his true form. Chu Daoyuan could not bear to harm him. “Wicked beast,” he said, “you came here for no reason to make trouble, and by rights your life should be ended. But this man of the mountains has a share of the virtue of cherishing life, and I’ll spare you. Be off with you, quick!” The alligator dragon crawled slowly out through the temple gate, raised a wind with great difficulty, and was gone. No sooner had he left than Ji Gong came stumbling in from outside.
