Chapter Three · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Plying Chan wiles, he cures the sick at the Zhao house;Speaking the Dharma, he saves lives in secret

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in the hall of a rich house, a bearded old man in a headcloth holds a young woman by the arms as she kneels before him, both of them weeping; behind them a ragged monk laughs, holding a small pill on his palm, and a long-bearded gentleman in a tall cap stands to one side with both hands raised in surprise.

Now, Ji Gong had cured Zhao Wenhui’s mother, and there was still the six-year-old boy, for whom they begged Ji Gong’s help. “I can cure him all right,” Ji Gong said. “It’s just that the guide ingredient for the medicine is hard to find. I need a man of fifty-two who was born on the fifth day of the fifth month, and a girl of nineteen born on the fifth day of the eighth month. Mix the medicine with the tears of those two, and then he can be cured.” Su Beishan and Li Huaichun, seeing that the monk really was somebody, asked him where he lived and how he should be addressed, and the monk told them everything. Zhao Wenhui went outside and sent his servants to look for a man of fifty-two born on the fifth day of the fifth month. They went about asking for a while, but there was no such man, neither in the household itself nor among the relatives and friends who had come or their servants. Where the age was right, the birthday was wrong; where the day and month were right, the age was wrong. The search took them all the way to the gate, and there they saw a man standing outside, a little past fifty by the look of him. The servant Zhao Liansheng hurried over, cupped his fist in salute and said, “May I ask your name, sir?” “My name is Dong Shihong,” the man said. “I’m from Qiantang. I’m waiting here for someone.” “Would you be fifty-two, sir?” said the servant. “That’s right.” “And born on the fifth day of the fifth month?” “That’s right.” The servant hurried up and took him by the arm. “Master Dong, come with me. My master asks for you.” “How does your master know me?” said Dong Shihong. “Tell me first, and then I’ll go.” So the servant told him all about the search for the guide ingredient. Dong Shihong followed him inside and met Ji Gong, Zhao Wenhui and the others; the servant made his report and introduced him all round. “Quick,” said Ji Gong, “go and find a girl of nineteen, born on the fifth day of the eighth month.” When Dong Shihong heard this — the very age and birthday of his own daughter — he turned it over and over in his mind and could not rest. Then a servant came in and said, “Chunniang, maid to the married lady of the family, is nineteen and was born on the fifth day of the eighth month. We’ve brought her.” A girl came in from outside. Dong Shihong looked: it was his own daughter. His heart wrenched, and the tears fell. When the girl saw it was her father, she began to weep too. The monk roared with laughter. “Excellent! Excellent! With one move I’ve gained three things — three good ends served at once.” He reached out, took out his medicine and held it on his palm. He had a servant dissolve it in the tears of the two of them and told them to pour it down young Master Zhao’s throat. In a little while the boy’s head cleared, his breathing eased, and his illness was gone entirely.

The monk told Zhao Wenhui how Dong Shihong had lost his silver and tried to hang himself, and how he himself had saved him and brought father and daughter together again. Zhao Wenhui gave Dong Shihong a hundred taels of silver to help him and let him take Chunniang away with him; he would buy the lady another maid himself. When Li Huaichun asked, he learned that the monk was Ji Gong, the elder of Lingyin Temple. Su Beishan came over, bowed to the monk and begged him to have mercy and cure his mother. The monk stood up. “I’ll go to your house, then.” “Very good,” said Su Beishan. Zhao Wenhui could not very well press him to stay. He brought out a hundred taels of white silver for Ji Gong to have some clothes made. “If you want to thank me,” the monk said, “lend me your ear.” And he whispered thus and thus. “Set your mind at rest, Master,” said Zhao Wenhui. “I’ll be sure to come that day.” With that the monk left the Zhao house with Su Beishan. Dong Shihong and his daughter thanked Ji Gong and saw him off, and of them no more need be said.

Now, the monk came to Su Beishan’s house and sat down in the study. “Has anyone treated your honoured mother’s illness?” the monk asked. “To tell you the truth,” said Su Beishan, “I’ve called in I don’t know how many doctors, and none of them could do anything. Some time ago a miracle doctor who brings people back to life, Tang Wanfang, treated her, and she got no better. Then I asked Li Huaichun instead, and that did no good either. They all said that at her age her blood and breath are both spent, and there is no building them up again. I have done all a man can do and left the rest to Heaven. To meet you today, holy monk, is the luck of three lifetimes. My old mother’s long illness must be meant to mend.” As he spoke, he led the monk out of the study to the door of the main rooms in the west courtyard of the Qingzhu Studio, five bays on the north side of the path, and they went in and sat down. The old lady lay on her bed, with the serving women and maids standing round, laughing at the monk for his tattered clothes. “Don’t you laugh at this robe of mine,” the monk said. “Just listen to what I have to say:

‘Men of the world, don’t laugh that a monk’s robe is torn;your original face is nowhere in this world.’”

A servant brought tea. Ji Gong took out a piece of medicine and held it on his palm. Su Beishan saw that it was black as betel nut, with a strange fragrance that filled the nose. He reached out and took the wondrous elixir. “What is this medicine called?” “That’s this monk’s wonder drug,” said Ji Gong. “It’s called the Life-Demanding Elixir. Say a man is due to die: he takes this medicine of mine, and it demands his life back. It also goes by the name of the Stretch-and-Stare Pill.” Su Beishan dissolved it in water and poured it down his mother’s throat, and in a little while the old lady was cured.

Su Beishan ordered wine set out and invited the monk to sit and drink in the study, where they talked of things ancient and modern. Ji Gong had brocade stored in his breast and statecraft filling his belly. Only then did Su Beishan realize that here was a master from beyond the world. He took the monk as his teacher and wanted to give him new clothes. Ji Gong would have none of it. “If you want to thank me,” he said, “just do thus and so. I must be going.” “Master,” said Su Beishan, “think of my house as the family home you left behind. Come whenever you like, and stay here with us.” “Kind of you,” the monk answered. “Today I’m going back to the temple.” He left the Su residence, and out in the streets he sang a wild song:

Since ancient times men have laughed at the Five Marquises, decked in flowers, flaunting brocade, the gayest of them all.Where has all their power and pomp gone now?A lonely house faces its grief in the slanting sun.Alas, my children, set about your cultivation;the affairs of the world are gulls upon the water. You who drift down the lost road, come back to the road of your vow;break through the pass of delusion and strike it all out at a stroke.

Ji Gong went back to the temple and slept up in the Great Stele Tower. Guangliang wanted to do away with Ji Gong to pay off an old score. Knowing that Ji Gong slept up in the Great Stele Tower, he sent his disciple Biqing to set a fire in the night and burn Ji Gong to death. The first time the fire was set, Ji Gong let fly a stream of piss that soaked the little monk’s head and put it out. The second time, the Great Stele Tower caught; the flames leapt into the sky and the blaze roared. There is a poem to prove it:

All it takes is a tiny spark to call up the pitiless powers of Li; riding the wind, it blazes and shows its might, fierce flames soaring into the sky.Hear only the roar and rush of it, thick smoke climbing to the clouds; the whole sky, the whole earth glowing red, painted halls and carved beams gone without a trace.

When the great fire broke out, all the monks of the temple got up. “This is terrible! Quick, put the fire out! The mad monk Daoji is asleep up in the tower — he’ll be burned to death! Well, maybe it’s his fated calamity.” Together they put the fire out. The prior, Guangliang, thought that this time the mad monk had been burned to death with no one the wiser, and he was just rejoicing when he saw Ji Gong come out of the Main Hall, roaring with laughter. “When man wants a man dead, it won’t happen. When Heaven wants a man dead, what could be easier?” Seeing that Ji Gong was not dead, Guangliang was put out. He went to the abbot to report. “He burned down the Great Stele Tower. He ought to be punished for it.” “The burning of the Great Stele Tower was Heaven’s will,” said the old abbot. “What has it to do with Daoji?” Guangliang answered the abbot: “The state has its royal laws and the temple has its monastic rules. In this temple, when one lights his lamp, all light their lamps, and we eat our meals and go to sleep at the set hours. Daoji never lets his lamp go out — he keeps it burning all night long — and the earthly fire drew down a fire from heaven. He has broken the monastic rules and ought to be punished. His robe and bowl and his ordination certificate should be smashed and destroyed, and he should be driven out of the temple and not allowed to be a monk.” “That is too heavy,” said the old abbot. “Send him out to raise money by begging for the rebuilding. That will do.” And he gave the order: “Tell Daoji to come in and see me.” Before long Ji Gong came in from outside, stood before the abbot and saluted him with palms joined. “Old monk, here is my greeting.” “Daoji,” said the abbot, “you have not kept the monastic rules, and you burned down the Great Stele Tower. I am sending you out to beg for alms to rebuild it. The work is bound to need ten thousand taels of silver. Ask your Brother how many days he will give you.” “Brother,” said Ji Gong, “how many days will you give me?” “Can you collect ten thousand taels of silver in three years?” said Guangliang. “No good,” said Ji Gong. “Too far off. You’ll have to make it sooner.” “A year, then, to collect ten thousand taels of silver for the work on the Great Stele Tower,” said Guangliang. “Will that do?” “No good,” said Ji Gong. “Still too far. Bring it closer.” “Half a year, then,” said Guangliang. Ji Gong shook his head and still said closer. “A month,” said Guangliang. Ji Gong still found it too far. “Can you collect ten thousand taels of silver in a day?” said Guangliang. “Ten thousand taels in a day?” said Ji Gong. “You go and collect it — I can’t.” And with that Ji Gong roared with laughter. The monks talked it over and said, “Give him a hundred days and send him out to collect it. If he collects ten thousand taels of silver, that will make up for his offence.” Ji Gong agreed. Every day he went out to beg for alms. In Lin’an he gave away medicine and saved lives, bringing salvation to all living beings, and took on countless lay disciples. He played the madman and the fool and never showed his true face.

One day, on the hillside behind Feilai Peak, he saw two hunters out after hares, deer, foxes and storks. He blocked their way. “What are your names, you two? Where are you off to?” One of them said, “I’m Chen Xiao, and they call me the Lord of the Fine Beard (Meiran Gong). That’s my younger sworn brother, Yang Meng, the Sickness-Star God (Bingfu Shen). We’re on our way back from hunting in the hills. And who are you, Master?” Ji Gong told them, then roared with laughter and said,

“Every day in the mountain dens, from dawn to dusk you hunt.To keep your own life going, theirs must come to an end.”

Yang Meng and Chen Xiao knew then that the monk was a man of high attainment living as a recluse. At once they knelt and bowed and took Ji Gong as their master. “From now on we two will change our trade,” they said, “and earn our bowl of rice with friends in the escort business, and find some place to settle down and make a life.” “Good,” said the monk. “You’re sure to prosper more every day.” After the two had gone, the monk stayed in the temple drinking wine and eating meat, and did no begging at all. Guangliang did not press him either; he was waiting for the deadline to come so that he could drive him out. Time slipped by, the days and months flying like a shuttle. More than a month passed, and he had not collected a single tael of silver. One day Ji Gong saw that the monk who kept the temple gate was not there, and he went into Weituo Hall. The image there was majestic, truly a sight to see. There is a poem to prove it:

His gold helmet with phoenix wings dazzles the eye;his chain-linked armour flashes as it flies. In his hand an iron club as hard as steel;his face is like the face of Guanyin. On his feet, battle boots of dark green; embroidered sashes flutter all about him. Great guardian king of the Dharma before the Buddha, at the very sound of him, demons lose their nerve.

When Ji Gong had looked his fill, he said, “Old Wei, come out with me for a stroll.” He reached out, hoisted Weituo onto his shoulder, went out through the temple gate and set off along the shore of West Lake. People passing by said, “Hey, everybody, I’ve seen monks begging for alms — some drag a big lock, some beat a wooden fish — but I’ve never seen one carry Lord Weituo through the streets on his shoulder to beg.” The monk roared with laughter. “You’ve never seen anything, so keep your mouth shut. Our temple’s moving house.” Everyone laughed at what the monk said.

The monk was walking along when he suddenly looked up and saw a column of black vapour rising straight up to the clouds. Ji Gong clapped his hands three times and consulted his inner light. “Excellent! Excellent!” he said. “How could I not step in?” Walking on, he saw a wine and food house on the north side of the main street, the Zuixian Tower. A wine placard hung outside, and on it was written:

Taibai, for a dipper of wine, wrote a hundred poems;in the market of Chang’an he slept in the wine shop. The Son of Heaven called for him, but he would not board the boat, saying, “Your servant is the Immortal in the Cup.”

The couplet on either side read: In drink, heaven and earth grow vast; in the pot, the days and months run long. From inside came a clatter. Ji Gong lifted the door curtain. “Hard at work, shopkeeper?” The shopkeeper inside took one look and took him for a little monk out begging. “Monk, we only give money on the first and the fifteenth.” “I see,” said Ji Gong. “So here you only sell on the first and the fifteenth.” He stood outside the door. Before long three men came along from the east: the master of a grain shop, bringing guests to a meal. Ji Gong stuck out his arm. “You three want to eat? This place only sells on the first and the fifteenth.” When the three heard this, they went somewhere else. Three or four parties came one after another, and Ji Gong turned every one of them away. The restaurant’s shopkeeper flew into a rage and came out. “Monk, you’re driving away everyone who comes to eat! What are you up to?” “I wanted to eat,” said Ji Gong. “The moment I came in the door, you told me the first and the fifteenth. So I took it you only sell food here on the first and the fifteenth.” “I took you for a monk out begging,” said the shopkeeper. “That’s why I told you about the first and the fifteenth, when we give money to monks and Daoists, see?” “Not so,” said Ji Gong. “I came to eat.” “Then please come in,” said the shopkeeper. Ji Gong carried Weituo through to the back room, found a clean table and sat down. He ordered several dishes and drank four or five pots of wine. When he had finished, he called the waiter over to reckon it up: one string of cash and six hundred and eighty coppers in all. “Put it on the account,” said Ji Gong. “Another day, when I eat here again, I’ll pay it all together.” The shopkeeper had been keeping an eye on him all along, and when he heard there was no money, he came over. “Monk, you sent all my customers away. You’ve eaten today, and you don’t leave here without paying! You owe one string and six hundred and eighty coppers, and pay it you will.” Ji Gong was in the middle of a quarrel with the waiter when a shout went up outside like a clap of thunder. Two heroes had come, bent on raising havoc in the restaurant, and many things were to come of it.
