Chapter Fifty-Three · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

A greenwood bandit, of all people, is held up on the road;A crafty scheme tries to paint a tiger and fails

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a country road at night under a round moon, a fierce bearded swordsman who has leapt from a grove raises a curved sabre above his shoulder and points at a slim traveller in close-fitting clothes with a bundle on his back; the traveller stops short, one hand on the hilt of his half-drawn knife and the other held out, staring at him; a hamlet and hills lie in the distance.

Now, Ji Gong went into the Huiying Tower. Seeing his ordinary clothes, the manager took him for a poor monk and made no fuss over him. But when Yang Meng, Chen Xiao and the others, five in all, came in, he hurried over. “Come inside, gentlemen.” Ji Gong stood outside the counter. “Manager, I’m here too.” “Glad you came, Monk,” said the manager. “Please, go in and sit down.” The six of them went through to the back hall, and a waiter came over. “Will you six go upstairs, or sit somewhere else?” “Have you got a private room?” the monk asked. “There’s only the one private room,” said the waiter, “and three gentlemen went in just now and have already ordered their wine and dishes. You six had better go upstairs.” “Not upstairs,” said the monk. “I’ll go into the private room and get those three to give it up. How’s that?” “That won’t do!” said the waiter. “Never you mind,” said the monk. “I’m going into the private room.” He lifted the curtain and went in. Three men were drinking there. They were newly sworn brothers, and the eldest was treating his two younger brothers to wine. They were deep in talk when in came a monk, who walked up to them and said, “You three gentlemen drinking here, Your wine’s on me. Let me order you a few more dishes!” All three stood up. The eldest suspected the monk was a friend of his two sworn brothers, and the two suspected he was someone the eldest knew, so they all said, “No need to stand treat, Monk. Stay and drink with us.” “Please, please!” said the monk, and backed out again. “Brothers,” the eldest asked, “which temple is that monk from?” “We don’t know,” said the other two. “Isn’t he a friend of yours, Elder Brother?” “No,” he said. The three of them laughed. “What’s all this about, then? Sit down and drink.” But the moment they sat down, all three of them jumped up again with a yelp. “As soon as I sat down,” said the eldest, “something stuck me in the backside.” “Waiter,” said the other two, “bring a tray, quick. There’s something wrong with this room. We’re moving out to the main room.” So the waiter carried their things out for them. When Ji Gong and his party saw the men come out, they went in. They sat down inside, ordered wine and dishes, and had drunk a few cups when they heard someone outside talking in a loud, booming voice: “Joiners and Reds, we chew at this kiln. Joiners, Reds, watch the kiln for hawk-claw boys.” With that, in came three notorious bandits.

A word of explanation: one of them was Hua Yunlong. When he parted from Wang Tong in Lin’an, the two had agreed to meet at the Tongshun Inn in Qianjiakou and to wait there until they did. At the Tongshun Inn everyone took him for an escort master. He had been staying in the main rooms of the back courtyard. Last night, after eating his supper alone, he had felt uneasy, his hair prickling as if someone were tugging it, his flesh twitching as if hooked. He told the inn attendant to make up his bill. “I’m leaving. If a man from Xichuan by the name of Wang Tong comes looking for me, tell him I’ve gone on ahead and will see him back home.” The attendant agreed. By the time he left the inn, it was already the first watch of the night. Outside the village the sky was full of stars and a bright moon hung overhead. When he had gone five or six li, he came to a wood, and out of the trees leapt a man, chanting:

Rough-natured from the day that I was born,I loved the spear and staff and shirked my books.A drifting weed across the four seas, I spare the folk from harm;I roam the rivers and lakes and call at thatched huts. When I meet good people, I come to their rescue;it’s greedy officials and local tyrants I put to death.Wherever I go, I live by the heart in my breast, and never care whether king or law is there.
